Too bad all the people weren`t wearing 24 inch chains and dancing around it. The more jewelry, the less distance, the better.

WTF were those songs the people were cheering for?

Im the creator of this machine. In fact, i never thought it would gain such popularity. I see many people asked for some more details, so i whipped up another page on my website to give an overview of the project.

At the time, i had those musical sequences programmed into the micro controller, but next "performance" will be MIDI controlled with 2 tesla coils running at once.

My website (for those who want to see the tech specs):

http://www.stevehv.4hv.org/

Thanks for the encouragement guys! If i had the time, space and money, there would be a full tesla orchestra, but not on my wallet!

Kinda dangerous, that much voltage,m but would be ok if you had very strong attractors in all pitch directions.

i originally didn`t think it was possible, i watched the explination and then it made sense, (it`s not the actual tesla coils charge making the noise though, they`re turning it off and on really fast to create the frequencies, the same way that a speaker moves really fast to produce frequencies.

Now THAT`S Techno.

That was awesome. It reminds me of my brother`s tesla coil he made. As well as many other things, what mean practical jokes were pulled from an engineer... It`s painful.

Never shake a PVC tube without knwing what else is in it. I got a good shock from that prank, and a minor heart-attack.

Dangerous? Pfft hardly... didn`t you see Hugh Jackman walk into one of these things? He survived. In fact, he multiplied. Yup. The Prestige. He was using clones made by the machine. Sorry if I ruined anything for you. Ha!

Pfft it was the dungeon level of Mario, not the kick ass underwater song or even the regular field song. OH well...

Tiredofnicks posted a link to an explanation on page 2. I only watched the beginning of the video he linked to: if I understood it aright, they`re using digital circuitry to switch the coil on and off at whatever frequency corresponds to a given tone. Kind of a cheat, in other words. I might have misunderstood the details, though.

A lot of "point-and-shoot" cameras use the flash automatically when it`s dark out.

So what? Computer science students were doing things like that with processors and punched tape decades ago.

Put a radio near the processor (back in the good old days) and feed it the right input. Now they use a tesla coil. I guess every science`s students get bored once in a while ;)

Also, I have Tetris in my head now. >_< ¬

The_ocartina: The tesla coil _IS_ making the sound. Yes it`s hooked up to a keyboard, but there`re no `conventional` speakers anywhere.
Search Youtube for `plasmasonic` and you`ll find some very high-fidelity stuff.

were people taking photos with the flash on? or was that residual light from the tesla? as far as I know, the tesla will only light up in one continuous fashion, no erratic flashes meaning some people were taking pictures with the flash on........

The tesla coil wasn`t making the music, it was hooked up to a synth. (keyboard)
when a note was played on the keyboard it triggerd the tesla coil.
nice visuals but it`s not an instrument.

Yeah, Argh_Beast, I don`t think it`s that they are "Watching" the music, it`s that it is something new. Yes, you can appreciate music from instruments that have been around for hundreds of years, but they really just get old after a while. And I can play a Sax, a Harmonica, Electricity...all the same and still appreciate music just as much, though maybe not with the Mario theme song, however awesome it may be.

OMG that`s well cool. I bet everyone`s hair was standing on end by the time it finished though.
Did the coil burn out or something? I thought they were permanent things... It seemed it just ran out of fuel or something.

Oh and Argh_Beast? We`re not saying that it was the best music, just that it was original and pretty creative to be honest. And the fact that you could recognise the tunes shows some kind of musicianship there too. So calm down, okay?
BTW that link was pretty good though. Have to say I don`t enjoy Mendohlsson that much usually, but this was an exception!

Yet another reason not to stay at a Holiday Inn. You know, silly me. I always make my icons small to "fit" in the little window. You know so people could tell what it is without having to make the drater bigger. Silly me.

The Cat name is Cesar! He ruled my backyard for 2 years. Actually i never layed my eyes on another cat whyle he was alive. Then he tryed to expand his territory and got killed. I have to stop giving these names to my cats or they will all die young.

You know what`s weird, Argh-beast? I always recognized your avatar as a shirtless black man flexing his pecs; though now I see that it is a cat brutalizing a bird, for on an impulse I decided to click to enlarge and finally see what all this hype was about. Quite fascinating!

These Tesla "this is awesome" comments come to confirm my theory about how people watch music but do not ear it. Jean Michel Jarre is the perfect example. But if someone should put something like thisin front of you all, only some would understand the beautiful meaning of music.
