You know, it could be magnets, but probably not.

Of course, they do tatoo fish. They really do--you can get livebearers (mollys, platys, etc) with hearts and stuff (like initials) tattooed on them....shortens their lifespan by a ton though.

Fish are smarter than we think - humans have a bad habit of underestimating nature....

I believe you guys are thinking of goldfish having three second long short-term memories - which isn`t that much different than a human`s (seven seconds or so?)

Short-term memory does not equal what connotation "memory" has.

I don`t think that they were trained. Goldfish can only remember things that happened up to literally three seconds ago.

laterforever, if you are talking about reinforcement, then you could be talking about operant conditioning. Sorry, i just spent a semester at Uni learning that crap.

Anyway, back to the topic of these goldfish: But why ??

I don`t know. I can see training a goldfish to swim in certain directions at certain times, but four in perfect formation?
Dolphins and dogs are a bit smarter than goldfish.

And they are speaking Chinese, not Japanese.

lol.

magnets? seriously?

if you ever take intro to psych or study learning you`ll realize it just takes a bit of classical conditioning, like pavlov did with his salivating dogs. when you want a behavior to reoccur, like swimming in a certain direction with a certain hand movement, you just need to reward the bahvior with a positive reinforcement, like food.

this is the same way they teach dolphines to flip or whatever.

That was staged, they have 3 second memories, Tricky01, don`t believe everything you see on the internet, also, you don`t have to remember something for an instinctive reaction to form despite what yahoo tells you...

Goldfish are supposed to have a VERY short-term memorie. I wouldn`t be surprised if it had to do with magnets.

OR

The Japanese have done some crossbreeding with goldfish :-O. SUPA-SMART GOLDFISH with Asian powers @[email protected]

Criss Angel can suck my left nut! Go David Blaine!

Eh I can`t believe I`m the first to say this, but is it any real surprise that an Asian is the trainer? I mean, who else (besides Chuck Norris of course... don`t yell at my patriotpappy) could fathom a reason to want to do this (or could)?

i took a lot of time thinking through this and i have ruled out the magnets theory and the vibration theory, and then it occurred to me... THEY`RE CARNIVAL FISH!
this sort of thing comes natural to them, der...

too bad they probably died the next day though... shame

^^^^LoL fish are known in animal world for having social behaviours has well! Nemo came to disprove all that. Bunch of "movie learners" idiots.
Anyway i would pay to see one of those guys grab a fish putting in a sushi plate and eat it live. The face of the owner would be priceless.

I think this is sad... if my thinking is correct. They placed magnets in their stomachs and had a mechanism under the tank and "moved" the fish like that. I may be way off on this one, but I don`t think so."

Love it GeneralPhyL.

I was always taught that goldfish had three second long memory spams. So they must just be following his hand. Or that crazy and sick magnet idea. Still cool to watch.

actually... i think you are right funboy. but it would have to be just strong enough to control where they swim without it making it look like they are being dragged on their bellies

I tried doing this once with my goldfish and every time I rubbed my hand against the side of the tank the fish would follow it, but I could never get them to swim together- just swim away from the vibrations that the rubbing of the tank sent... hmmm
