ok i don`t know what happened before the kid with the camera got there but if they were really just skateboarding, and the cop did that to the first kid he arrested, the cop really went to far to attack the kids like that.
i smell a law suit coming.

That kid was clearly running away from the cop. You don`t run from a cop.

And everyone here (who`s not gullible) knows when a kid says "all I was doing was riding a skateboard" they`re buttercupping the story up. They`re never the bad guy.

This video is far too ambiguous to prove either side innocent or guilty.

OK, so you don`t run from a cop...but...that`s because cops should probably not be beating the crap out of kids like that weather or not they were "buttercupping the story" I can imagine that they may have instigated it a little bit but really if your an officer of the law you should be able to keep your cool much better than that.

Regardless of what may or may not have happened previous to the start of the clip, what you see in the beginning is enough. Once he knows he`s being filmed he eases up a bit.

I`ve worked at a print shop for a number of years, and we print tests for street officers occasionally for various states. If you can pass middle school, you can pass these tests. I`m sure(hoping?) their field tests are more demanding, but my point is just about anybody can be a cop. It`s because of this we have ill-tempered non-nice individual cops like this rolling around with a bone to pick. Seriously, it`s a 13 year old kid, and you don`t need to be that aggressive.

Besides it`s the idiots who bike in the middle of the road they should be mad at, not these punks.

I agree with the "Good, bad, and lazy" theory (Some people do their job right, wrong or not at all). I was with a few friends in a buddys car and I dont even want to mention how many laws we could`ve been breaking. The cop let us go and just told us to leave. He was lenient to say the least.

That cop in the vid was an a-hole and somebody better sue that cop for man-handling those kids.

I`m surprised that the cop didn`t delete the footage after he got the kid with the camera. I like how the cop was rattling-off the ordinances the kid was gonna get charged with, plus assaulting an officer cause he knee was bleeding, boo-hoo on the boo-boo. Dumb ass was wearing shorts. Don`t you think that there are bigger, badder criminals to deal with than handcuff kids.

Apparently some people think the cop is justified to arrest the minors (according to the article) for violation of skateboarding on the sidewalk when there were signs posted saying no skateboarding.

Im from Louisiana... DEEP south... and I dont know how things are handled up in Arkansas, but down here violation of a sidewalk sign does not merit arrest.

A ticket? Yes. Wrestling minors to the ground and hauling them off to jail? No.

    Abuse of authority ftl.

Ok, I live in Arkansas, and I know where Hot Springs is. I`m sure he was just bored, because most things that happen in towns like that are speeders and meth labs...so punk kids, most likely being smart asses, tend to be a target. Still, that cop was obviously treating them a bit too much like armed suspects, and not annoying children.

As a police cadet, I`ll agree the guy was a complete ass. There are cops like that, and he was a rookie according to jaysingrimm`s link. A lot of guys are hotheaded at first. But you don`t hear about the good cops (and even the bad ones) who are out there risking their lives every damned day to ensure our safety. Yeah, some are p.ricks or whatever you want to call them, but if you don`t like it, don`t break the law (or ordinances), or move to Sudan or something. Peace....

Its good that this video is seen. There are countless amounts of times I`ve been harassed by the police. Maybe its my long hair, but I never deserve what they`ve done. Next time, Im getting their badge number so they know to ease up.

And to those people saying that the kids were making the things up... does that describe why the cop was getting a little restless-specially to the guy filming exactly what happened?

Still, choking is a huge no-no.

this guy should not be on paid leave. he should be fired asap. the Arkansas police should not let people think this is an acceptable way for their cops to act.

    Quote:
"They face charges of resisting arrest, battery, and fleeing." Not skateboarding.
"Police say four of the six arrested are juveniles." Meaning two, are adults.

"the kid was running because he had a pic of the cop choking the other guy and the cop was gonna destroy it".
And yet the guy he *did* arrest with the *videocamera* didn`t have it destroyed.

Not every picture shows the truth. Especially one where someone is being restrained. All you need is a snapshot at any point to make a completely different one:

They should be prosecuted for every single charge.

They got busted for continuing to break the law after a warning, and are now whining. Sucks to be them.

i looked into this. simply because i wanted to know if that stupid cop got canned. so here it is:
    (source: portland.indymedia.org)
In Arkansas, some kids decided to celebrate Go Skateboarding Day. While skateboarding downtown, one was arrested- and it appears to be because he was skateboarding.

(blah blah blah so it explains the video again)

This website reached the mayor, Mr. Mike Bush, for a comment and was told that directly after the incident, the officer was put on administrative leave (with full pay). They are in the process of investigating the incident, speaking with more than 40 witnesses.

(I personally think that cop realized what he put himself into halfway through and milked it real good so he could keep his job. because, like another commenter stated.. the kids should of shut the hell up so they could sue that cop for everything he owns and haha id like to point out how fast that girl blitzed after the cop got hold of her. shall i say: `zooom!` hahah)

    Sgdp,
I have to disagree with your comments. Sorry, but I have to quote the great Henry David Thoreau.
`people should not permit governments to overrule or atrophy their consciences, and that people have a duty to avoid allowing such acquiescence to enable the government to make them the agents of injustice.`
So think about it in more than one perspective than your own lady.
When a cop turns sour its becomes about time for them to get canned. There are plenty of other fish biting at the chance to `protect our community`. If they get so tired of their `encounters` then they need to quit. Seriously, when any other hard working citizen screws up in their job, they get fired first hand. Just because a person is a damn cop and can use a gun, doesnt mean they are better than any of us.
Society doesnt pat you on the back when you pick up someone elses trash on the ground. But when your the one throwing it - you lose our respect.
Bad cops.. just lose our respect.

    IABaddict.
When a cop turns sour? Please.

He`s doing his job, and acted, maybe (although I disagree), more roughly than is appropriate.

When they`re taking bribes, abusing their position, then they lose our respect. Not when he is doing his job while being harassed by a bunch of snotty kids.

I hope when you`re picking up trash all proud and respectable like, those same kids defecate at your feet, mock, and harass you. I hope any nearby cops are too scared of being sued to do anything about it. I hope you get fired for "not doing your job" of keeping the streets clean.

And when you whine about it, I hope someone quotes Henry David Thoreau.

IABaddict: I never defended the cop`s actions or the cop himself. I only defended the millions of good cops who are out there protecting us every day. I in no way respect cops like the one in this video, and I know several of them, trust me. They have huge power/authority problems. I repspect and trust and love the good ones.
My family (mom and bro) have both been terribly affected by lying cops. Both have been in jail for it, when they had done nothing wrong. I know how terrible they can be when they abuse power. But I also know how good the good ones are. Don`t be so prejudiced. The bad do not speak for the good. Peace & Love.

"Its good that this video is seen. There are countless amounts of times I`ve been harassed by the police. Maybe its my long hair, but I never deserve what they`ve done. Next time, Im getting their badge number so they know to ease up."

Funny, my hair is past my ass, and the cops are always really nice to me when they pull me over while i`m taking a walk at 3 a.m. down dark alleys. Seriously. They pull me over, wanting to know what`s going on, who i am, and why i`m walking around that late. I tell them i`m a night owl, and just need to get outta the house. they check my i.d. and I go about my business, no problems. Sorry, Lblues, find another excuse, it ain`t workin.

And to those who hate the police, think about it. Do you want to live in a society without them there?

Yes I hate the attitude punk kids have too who like to `fight the power` because they`re retarded little 15 year olds that still live with their parents.
However, what I`m guessing happened was they were riding down the street and the city has a `no skateboarding` policy. Which would warrant a warning and being asked to leave.
The cop didn`t know what he was talking about attempting to arrest 5 kids for violating city ordinances. He arrested those other 3 on a whim. Otherwise they would have been in cuffs long before then.
The cop was way too rough with all of them from what I saw, especially the boy and girl in the last 3 that were arrested.
The only reason he got suspended is that`s how city govt. works. Everyone watches out for everyone, no matter who`s in the wrong. Federal and State govt. can come in and stomp on the city`s `circle of protection` but they dont` often do it.

IABaddict: "Sorry, but I have to quote the great Henry David Thoreau."

    -you`re not sorry
-if you were sorry you wouldn`t quote him
-and you don`t HAVE to do it
-the only reason you are doing it, is because you just read it in your high school English class and you want to sound smart.

Starcrosst: I`m with you for the most part. Attitude plays a big role in how you`re treated. However other factors do play a part like age and knowledge of the law. Cops that are trying to BS me just to get a commission for another ticket have let me go when they find out I`m in law school, because they`re afraid I might catch on.

If any of you have read: `The Lucifer Effect` you might understand a little more as to the cops behavior. If you haven`t, then I highly recommend it.

i smell a law suit coming."
but the problem is, we DONT know what happened before the video started. he could have just been skateboarding, or, he could have tried to fight.
you`re all saying "hes just a 13 year old kid"
but he has (had) a skateboard that can really hurt if he swings it, and its a good possibility that he did. but it is also possible that the cop tasered him before he had the chance to get off the skateboard.

"uh... so we don`t know the story, and that makes it ok for him to try and wrestle a young girl to the ground? right, perfect sense.
this guy should not be on paid leave. he should be fired asap. the Arkansas police should not let people think this is an acceptable way for their cops to act.
and that fleeing charge is utter bull. if i saw a cop strangle a kid id get the drat out of there."
you`re missing something here. first, the fact that it was a girl doesn`t mean anything.
second, if the skateboarder had pulled a gun on the cop he is allowed to shoot, no questions asked. wrestling to the ground is far less "cruel".
also, isnt it so convenient that the video didn`t start till after the "brutality" started?

    2) Dont interfere with something that`s none of your business.

The cop seemed really pissy that day but I have no sympathy for the punk kids. They need to learn to mind their own business and not run from police. The girl had to stop and start making comments so she got arrested too.

everyone knows that skateboarders are just idiots thats aren`t smart or talented enough to play a musical instrument, do well at a REAL sport, or do well in school. The only thing skaters can do is get filmed breaking every bone in their body then telling everyone "they almost landed it", and getting all the attention they want. But thats not all, they`re obviously too stupid to get their haircut and when they do it sucks hairy balls.

are you guys f*ckin kidding me?!? as soon as the girl heard the cop say a word to her about being arrested, she bolted...and what is that, resisting arrest. the first guy on the ground was putting up a fight, but we never see that cuz they edited it out. the first guy who ran all over the place was harassing the cop.

and for those of you who say "theyre just little kids, poor little 13 year old kids"...my dad was a cop for 20 years in san diego. he was going to ticket a kid for roller blading on the boardwalk, he stopped the kid and right before he gave him the ticket, the kid pulled a gun but fumbled it and shot the ground. my dad shot him in the knee (something very generous, at the time, standard procedure is two in the chest) the kid fell backward dropping his gun.

another thing, notice that the cop and the kid are way down the block, and the other kids have to run over to them...hmm...maybe the first kid on the ground was running...and maybe running from a cop is resisting arrest.

as far as "paid leave" goes, thats standard practice. any time a cop is under question, they put him on paid leave, its not a disciplinary action. they do is because if the cop was to run into the same kids again doing something wrong, he would have a conflict of interests. on one hand, as a police officer, he is required by law to act. However, he is under suspicion by those kids and therefore any thing at all towards them could be considered intimidation of a witness.

For the cop: You have no idea what these kids where doing before the camera started rolling. They did run and that is, in fact, evading arrest. The other kids that were standing around were in fact harassing him while he attempted to arrest the first squirmer. They shouldn`t be skateboarding in the first place, anyhow.
Against the cop: He shouldn`t be so violant towards the kids. Although running and evading arrest would need a bit of power, choking a kid to throw them to the ground is not cool. Some of the others, also, did nothing but talk in the video. I didn`t know that you could get arrested for saying something, unless it`s a threat...

The cop did the right thing. If you read the article, you idiots would find that skateboarding is illegal there. Not to mention it is entirely possible that the guy wasn`t choking him, but rather trying to grab his back to flip him over and the picture was taken at that specific minute.

I hate these skateboarders. They were BREAKING THE LAW, for christ`s sake, and yet you side with them? I`d be with the cop if he beat them bloody and tazed them, there is no excuse for intentionally violating laws that are posted in plain sight.

Every time there`s a video of a cop doing something wrong, the discussion turns into good cops vs. bad cops. Yes, there are a lot of good cops out there, but there are also a lot of terrible cops. This officer, whether the kids were resisting arrest or not, had no right to be so agressive. If the kids were fighting back, then yes, it would make sense if he needed to choke them. But they were being dumb kids. The kids should be punished, because yes, they did break the law, but regardless the cop was way out of bounds even if the kids had taunted him. He`s a grown man, he should be able to handle it. If he can`t keep his cool in a situation like this what`s going to happen when an actual dangerous situation arises? And yes this counts as an overtly violent act that shouldn`t have happened-even if it`s not up to par with worse acts.

Simply put, it doesn`t make sense to defend violent or incompetant cops because there are good cops out there.

I will say it again: THEY WERE SKATING ILLEGALLY. THEN, they resisted arrest and ran- they should be sent to prison for that.

Oh, and Necrotism, the truth is that the majority of skateboarders are people who either fail in school or can`t play a real sport. That`s it. You might be the exception, or you might be lying. I don`t know, and I don`t give a poo.

It was stupid of the kids to run when he went to stop them for skateboarding, but the cop let his temper get the better of him. Arresting the kid for videotaping it then rattling off bullpoo charges was just plain stupid. He should have just nabbed the first kid for running, called for a car to put the kid in, told the others where they could bail their buddy out and tell them to take a hike or get ticketed themself. The cop just comes off as being on a power trip.

It`s always a bad idea to run from the cops. I don`t mind skateboarders but they can be a pain on public sidewalks as they aren`t always as good as they think they are. I`ve had a couple almost run into me and I have to admit, I`ve been tempted to clothesline them when they whip past me, going really close and muttering `heads up` as they pass. Skateparks exist for a reason or wait until the sidewalks are less busy

that officer was way to rough i dont care what you say. they were resisting arrest.. maybe.. but that is beucase he threw the first kid on the ground and choked him. those kids will not end up in jail beucase of police brutality which is not called for in such a minor offense. and from what i saw he never read them their miranda rights.. and dont argue back beucase for all i know when the camera went off they were read to them. but it also might go to show that he didnt think about it beucase he thought they were stupid ignorant kids who would never realize the difference and if the kids brought that up in court and the cop didnt lie and said he did then they would be set free to go. and not only was he being rough with the guys.. but he was being rough with the girl which is no more wrong on a legal scale but on an ethical scale will bring much disrespect upon that police officer.

So the kid with the picture ran. When he ran, he was resisting arrest? What was he being arrested for? As far as I know, taking a picture of a police officer isn`t against the law. It`s too bad the kid was so fast, though. If that officer caught him, he would have thrown the kid to the ground. Now THAT would`ve gotten him fired for sure.

Its not hard to understand don`t skate on the side walk, don`t mouth off to cops, and don`t run if you don`t want a tazer in your back. What probably happened was the kid either taunted or ran from the cop. The "choking" is actually a pain compliance move it only hurts if your resist. And actually this was low on the force scale he could have legally tazered the kids who ran, or running tackled them. And depending on how pissed off the cop is cussing at them counts as assult and results in an armbar. If a few more kid would just shut up and respect someone other than thereselves or had just found a damn empty lot this wouldn`t have happened.

Now, if I had maybe seen a part where the cop was telling the kid to go skating somewhere else, maybe I`d feel different, but I mean, the guy was choking some kid on a ground, and unless the kid was violently retaliating or something, I don`t see how that`s neccessary. And the cop was chasing after one guy because he said he got a picture of the cop choking the kid!
I`ve had a run-in with a cop at Wal-mart where I was skating outside with my friends, and an employee told us we can`t skate in the front of the store, so we said okay, `cause it was no big deal, but this cop came up to us after we started walking away telling us to get off the property because we LOOKED AT HIM AND STARTED WALKING AWAY. That`s not right. And he confronted my friend again, days later INSIDE the store, asking where his punk friend (me) was.
I think cops just get full of themselves sometimes, and just explode in a tantrum when they get bored. Ah well. Can`t change it.

    Okay....wth?

Skateboarding on the sidewalks isn`t allowed in my town, either. Do our cops treat the kids who do it anyway like they`re adult criminals? NO! Because they shouldn`t. It obviously wasn`t necessary to be so aggressive with these kids, let alone CHOKE them.

If you don`t "give a poo" like you so maturely put it. Then why did you even respond to my comment?
Which, may I add, wasn`t even directed towards you.
    But I digress,
The truth is that your generalizations are flawed. As are most generalizations.
Not only am I NOT lying, but I also have many friends who are in the same boat as myself: skateboard, did great in school, play other sports (if curling is a sport then skateboarding is definitely a sport) and have good jobs.
So next time you feel like "enlighting" everybody with your uneducated and flawed opinions I suggest you keep your mouth shut, thus you be OWNED!

"They got busted for continuing to break the law after a warning, and are now whining. Sucks to be them."

This statement is made on the assumption that all laws should actually be laws. There are plenty of bad laws that are unfair, stupid, and a waste of law enforcement`s time.

The USA has a history of bad laws. I`m not equalling the no-skateboarding law to racist and prejudiced laws, but I am saying that hey - we had very racist laws a few decades ago which blacks refused to obey. They were arrested as a result. Does that mean that because it was against the law, they deserved it?

Just because the law is accepted by a large portion of society, does not mean it should be a law or that people who disobey it should be arrested.

    Holy... crap.

What the hell?! Its like the cops are finding non-valid reasons to put kids in jail, I mean seriously; I`m pretty sure that girl can press charges for "rape" or "assult" in some cases because she only ADMITTED that she was skating, and he just charges her and puts her in a headlock. This... this is just stupid.

Cops believe that they`re above the law; thus the corruption. But... my god, this guy thinks hes Chuck Norris or something.

"Resisting arrest" - because the kids are trying to tell him that what he is doing is over the line

"Battery" - Battery?! I didn`t see anything like that, I only saw that cop choking that kid and head-locking that girl.

Its like they`re finding new laws to get teens into jail faster. And people can`t do anything about this, because they know they`re going to get arrested for saying that that s*** is wrong. People can think of this all they want, but all they want to say right now is

    "WTF

On another note, we`re (well some of us that is) are teenagers. Teenagers! I mean, some of us don`t like to listen to authority, because it only "spoils the fun"

I understand that, and I also understand that the cop might have gone too far.

I read the article and it said that the cop was in the Hot Springs Police Department for just under two years.

"Just under two years." - I bet you that hes not from there and from a place with strict skater laws.

I like neither the cop nor the kids, but I like the latter less. He was really trying to get these kids on as many charges as he could. The battery charge was completely rediculous. The kid who was actually taping the whole thing seemed to be cooperative as well. He didn`t try to run and, as far as I can tell, he wasn`t even skateboarding.

However, we don`t know what happened befoe all this. Maybe he told them to stop and they just blew him off. Then his actions would be a bit more justified. They also shouldn`t have chased the cop when he took the thirteen year old away yelling at him. You aren`t going to change his mind. You are just making him more mad.

So, both individuals or groups of individuals are at fault, but what that officer did was completely ludicrous.

That cop was just unfair. I`m not saying those punk skateboarders didn`t deserve to get in trouble, they did. I hate skateboarders who know they`re not suppose to be skating in an area and yet they do it anyhow to be rebels or stick it to the man. However, choking a kid? Why? The cop ovbiously was bigger than the kid? That cop should take some anger managment classes. Hand the kids a ticket and make sure their parents know just how much of a little prick their kids have been, but don`t man-handle them. That won`t make them realize that they`ve done wrong and should seriously knock that behavior off. Acting like that will only make the kids disrespect any form of athority again.

Idiot cops like the one in the video make all cops look bad, and that`s not right. Not all cops are dicks. However, there are far too many cops who look at teens and assume that they are up to no good. There`s a cop in my area who just loves
handing huge fines to kids, even if they did something minor.

Here`s a bit of advice for everyone. When a Police Officer tells you to do something, JUST SHUT UP AND DO IT! Don`t ask questions, don`t protest, because you are just going to make the situation more difficult for you.

Yeah, yeah, I know, nobody really knows what happened before the camera got there, but from what I can piece together, the Police Officer tried to stop the kid and ask him to stop skateboarding on the sidewalk, and the kid protested because he didn`t see anything wrong with what he was doing. If the kid had just listened to the Police Officer and had a rational conversation with him, non of that would have happened.

But like I said, non of us really know what happened. But I`m willing to bet that`s what happened, because all of his friends were doing the same damn thing, and then couldn`t understand why they were being arrested. "We were just skateboarding!" No, you were getting in the way of a Police Officer performing his job, and then resisted arrest.

If they had just stood back, said nothing, and cooperated, then the Police Office probably would have left them alone.

Maybe I’m a bit biased here, but my boyfriend is in the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) and every day when he comes home, I here about all the ungrateful idiots out there who seem to think that they know more than the Police and treat them like poo just because of their job. Do you people not understand that these men and women put their life on the line everyday just to make sure that we all have a safe place to live? They are doing us all a tremendous favour, and all some people can think about is how much of an inconvenience it is to them when a Police Officer decides to ask them a few questions. Well, if they would just do what they say, it would all be over in a couple of minutes. If you haven’t done anything wrong, then just do what they tell you, and pretty soon you will be back on your merry way.

If you have done something wrong, then just be straight up with them. And again, do what they tell you, because most officers are not looking for a fight. They just want to do their job as easily as possible. They actually trained to do their job and interact with the people with as little violence as possible, learning all sorts of talk down techniques. But when someone decides that they are going to stand up to the Police and refuses to cooperate, then in most cases, they get what they deserve.

Police Officers are seriously undervalued in the world today. These men and women dedicate their lives to making the world a safer place for everyone, and protecting people they don’t even know. The don’t do it for the gratitude (because believe me, there isn’t any) and they don’t do it for the power. Most people hate being known as the “Police Officer” in the community, because no one ever looks at them or treats them the same.

And by the way, the kid only used profanity when the cop assulted the girl (justified or not). He was just angry that the cop was man handling his friend...a natural reaction. Also the cops probably caused more drama than there would have been with just the kids skateboarding...

lol reading some of these comments makes me feel dumber. One thing that bothers me is the children that have no idea what they are talking about. Putting someone in a choke hold is not "strangling" first off. Also, whether or not he restrained a girl does not matter. A girl is just as capable of causing a problem as a male. The cop was over-reacting yes, but maybe the skater kids shouldn`t have been antagonizing him. I`ve come up against some real non-nice individual cops in my town, cops that have bothered me and my friends for: picking my friend up from his girlfriend`s at 3 am, walking across the street at 2 or 3 am (we got breathalized and searched) and about 15 other times that I`ve been pulled over. But guess what, I`ve never gotten a ticket or been arrested in my life, because I don`t ask for trouble, I go along, and they let me go. It`s a hard concept for a smartass group of kids, but I`m sure you can all grasp it some day.

I`ve lived in Hot Springs for several years. The kids there are smartasses and have a disregard for any type of authority. Bathhouse Row is pure tourist. Families from all places and all ages visit here. Skateboarders have hurt too many to count. My son is one of them. He now has a scar as a result from this. I`m glad the cop arrested them. They had no business butting in to a single situation and making things worse. The cop did seem to go overboard. (Hence the suspension)

Those kids got what they deserved. Notice how busy of place they were in? Is that a proper place to be skateboarding in? Skateboarding is a stupid reason for being arrested, but those kids deserved everything they got. Why were the cops being a little harsh? Well, I saw three other kids run away, which was a really stupid thing to do. The cops didn`t want the others to run away as well. And as for the guy with the camera, I`m glad he was arrested. There was no reason for him to be taping his friends` arrests. He probably did so he could replay it later and think, "Hey, I have police brutality on tape, I can make a lawsuit, get my friends out of jail, and even sue the police!" I know he didn`t do it so next Thanksgiving, he and his family could gather around and watch it.

Police aren`t necessarily brutal unless you give them a reason to be.

    Littlezazz.

And if they continued? Did the kids do anything he asked them to do without him restraining them? He not only could have asked. He did ask. It didn`t work. Plan B.

Not only do I not think what the cop did was that bad, the guys in the video don`t either. If they really felt this cop was brutalizing them, they wouldn`t be giggling and antagonizing him. They`d be going something more like "oh god, the pain, please take your baton out of my anus, don`t hurt me anymore", not "Haha, happy skateboarding day".

The kids were getting some bleeping exercise. It`s a GOOD thing. Since when is skateboarding reason to nearly tackle people and grab them around the throat? At least those kids got off their butts and are active. That fat cop could take a lesson from them.

Pretty funny, Tailrawr... you accuse me of making generalizations, then go on about how cops are evil because one of them said something to you.

Skateboarding is a sport that requires no skill to perform (you need skill to perform *well*), doesn`t require any cognitive ability, and doesn`t require tryouts to be accepted for. Therefore, it is the perfect sport for people with no brains and no real physical ability.

I`ve tried skateboarding before, and now I realize that I am better off learning computer programming than wasting time with sports, skateboarding or otherwise.

Now, back to the original topic: The kids were breaking the law, and then they ran. Where the hell is anything that deserves sympathy? A. They didn`t do what the cop said, which is reason enough for them to get their asses handed back to them. B. How do you know he was choking the kid? It was one f-ing picture.

^^We KNOW you`re not cool enough, shut the f*ck up.

And the kids were being jackasses at the same time the cop was being a dickhead. This is why they got their sh*t handed to them. A cop tells you to do something, you are much better off to just do it. Cops around my area would just take your stuff back to the department and you could go there the next day and get it back. They were cool if you were cool. All kids are jackasses, but being one to a cop is not very smart.

this made me so incredibly mad.
regardless of what they did, they are minors and they have rights, which he did not inform them of.
he was unnecessarily brutal, expecially with the girl.
there are no laws against carrying a skateboard. she wasnt riding it, he had no right to put her in a headlock and then try to tackle the two kids.

First of all, I must say the people arguing and b i a tching at each other about this really need to grow up.
Secondly, I think if any fat guy over the age of 15 man handles any girl/woman the way he did regardless of what was happening deserves to be smacked around.
As much as I dislike skateboarders generally, from the ones I know, this was retarded the way the cop was acting. Being a cop requires self restraint and choking a 15 year old girl because she was saying she didn`t agree with his punishment is bloody ridiculous. You don`t touch woman like that.

That is just completely out of line. This has actually happened to me on a few occasions. Cops think that they are better than other people for the simple fact that they are cops. It is seriously ridiculous, they are 13 year old kids for god`s sake, and they`re complying for the most part. There is ABSOLUTELY no reason to arrest any one of them. Skateboarding is just as much a crime as bicyling, and if kids cant skate on the sidewalks aren`t they really saying, "Hey kids, go play in the street!"

    This is absolute bull.
    Sue them for excessive force.

Why does everyone always think that skaters are punks? They`re not punks, ok? And yeah, that cop was way out of line with the brutality. I really think the kids should sue the cop. Sure, we don`t know what happened before the picture was taken, but there is pretty harsh footage of him wrestling the girl and the other kid. I mean, he was banging their heads together! I think the situation was not handled correctly and the cop should be either suspended or fired from the force.

I agree with btpanther39 about how stupid it is that everyone hates police because of videos like this. Like he says - wait until you actually NEED one.
You didn`t see everything. For all you know, it could`ve been justified. We don`t know if it was or wasn`t, so quit talking "omgz punx sk8rs r so kewl, stoopid f*kn kop lawsoot lolz im kewl 2."
If it wasn`t justified and he was in the wrong, all right. Some cops are mean, especially if they`ve had a long/bad day.
Some know what they`re doing though. Not EVERY one is bad. And living EVERY DAY with people hating you for trying to do your job (protecting the jackass hater they don`t want to protect, of course!)? Of course you`ll be angry with kids who think they`re gods and their sh*t doesn`t stink!
Newsflash: A lot of people resisting (they don`t want to be caught!) have weapons, too. Kid could`ve had a knife. All you need is a FINGER on a knife and an officer has every right to shoot.

Wow!, Big debate i think cops should be less leanient, and not loose their heads so easily, they`re there to set an example, when that 13 year old kid got choked, what`s he to think? will all cops treat me the same way? he may be innocent but he still got fu**ed over. Maybe thats where this grudge comes from against the cops, innoncent people being fu**ed over by them, and fairplay for them to do that because they have a reason to do so. But on the over hand they shouldnt have been skateboarding there fuls top should they? there were signs up... so the cops were only doing their job, although no he shouldnt have strangled him at all, but you gotta remember these `pigs` dont do just that they put their` ass on the line to save us, whether its just for their pay check or whether they do do it because of us, so pay some respect the only reason you saw this is becasue its wrong, how many right things do you see? none hardly because it is taken forgranted. let me know what you lot think....

The officer did not maintain control of the situation and in fact exculpated the situation by not effectively maintaining an even temperament as well as failing to maintain containment with the involved subjects. Worse yet this officer has lost his credibility by assaulting an under age subject with an illegal choke hold. If this was a different situation involving potentially more violent subjects this officer could have been injured or killed.

As for the complaining business operators; you are not good at what you do if you do not exploit the potential positives investing in the youth of your community. With a bit of planing with the City you could turn your negative into a positive. Work on making your part of the City friendly to all and you will reap the rewards in increase profits if not directly from the youth but, from the mid generation who spend money in your shops when downtown is an active place to be and not just someplace to go.

If we skaters aren`t allowed to ride on the sidewalks then where do you propose we do ride? The streets?

As for all of you saying skaters are dropouts, idiots, or whatever..I`m a straight A student, have spent 4 years learning how to play guitar and saxophone, and am soon hoping to be getting a job at a landscaping company. So please don`t speak about "us" if you don`t know what your are talking about.

Oh and side note...this was on National Go Skateboarding Day..where I`m pretty sure the majority of major cities agreed to not give out citations for just skateboarding. Correct me if I`m wrong.

On the issue of good cop/bad cop. Im not going to demoralize the police force but I do happen to know a bigger percent of officers who have performed (if thats the right word) police brutality then those who haven`t.

its not these you need yo worry about, its the actual rapists, killers and muggers the police should worry about, and all these scummy rapists, etc are still roaming our streets, getting petty sanctions for their actions, i think punishment by death is wrong but if they act like animals, then place them with other animals, i think an idea as cruel and not well thought out as it sounds is to whom ever who commited a crime such as murder etc. should lose their rights to live in that country, then they wont threatin anyone else ever again, simply place them on an island with others who are like so and let them see how far they will last then, then the blood isnt really on anyones hands either and i dont think it would be in breach of any humans rights so sounds pretty good :D haha

No poo they were wrong, but it still doesn`t warrant choking and manhandling them. Especially for a minor infraction such as breaking an ordinance. That`s saying a cop could come and beat the poo out of me for playing music too loud rather than just warning me or at the most giving me a ticket.

    This thread is so interesting.
Btw, whether the cop was right or wrong with his actions, the kids were wrong to begin with. The cop was enforcing the law, not making it. If you have a problem with the laws, take it up with the town committees, etc., not the guy doing his job: Upholding the peace.
You never ever EVER debate a law with a cop. "Wtf man, we`re just skateboarding" TOUGH! It`s illegal! Say "Yes, sir, we won`t do it again" and if you must, go skate somewhere else. But never argue with them. Stupid.

everyone saying go catch the rapists, murderers, and what not. Cops do catch those people, that`s why most of the prisons in the U.S. are full. Are they full of people who were arrested for skateboarding? probably not. Also the rapists and murders don`t commit their crimes in public usually so it`s not as easy to confront them as it is people skateboarding where they aren`t supposed to.

People seem to all operate on one opinion or the other. Very few people look at the vid as a whole, so they simply say `I hate cops` or `I hate skaters`. It`s pretty pathetic. The issue is not whether you like either faction or not, the issue is whether the cop acted with proper restraint in dealing with the teenagers. personally, i don`t think he did. i think he was having a bad day, was already tired of taking poo, and happened to choose a small group of skateboarders to unleash his fury upon. I think the cop was out of line, but it`s a catch 22. I know that no matter how much I know I should shut up, when i am being harrassed or otherwise screwed over by an authority figure I find it Very hard to not express my outrage..

    the difference..?

I would have done it in as calm and respectful a manner as I could while still getting my point across.

Either way, the law has done a fine job of putting the average citizen at a disadvantage when it comes to dealing with law enforcement on any civil level. Even disagreeing, or attempting to state that you feel your rights have been infringed upon seems to give some officers the right to harrass, arrest, or even brutalize you. That is why I say it`s a catch 22.
I am not some dumb kid that thinks that all cops are evil bullies, but I must admit that the respectful, civil cop to a-hole, bully cop ratio has been a bit lopsided for me. Like most people, it`s the exceptions to the rule that make you see why generalizations do more harm then good when it comes to people`s opinion of police officers.

In short... ( a little late for that now, eh?)

Wearing a badge does not make you above the law, but it doesn`t automatically make you a fascist either. A young person will talk just as much about an understanding, cool cop to their friends as they will about an a-hole cop.

Why deal with thieves when there are murderers and rapists? Why murderers AND rapists? Why deal with rapists when there are murderers? In fact, why deal with murderers when there are serial killers?

You can`t just pick the worst crime and only handle that one. If there was a murderer *BESIDE* him running away, that would be another matter, but there wasn`t.

It`s a case of handling the situation at hand, or failing to do his job.

This video is far too ambiguous to prove either side innocent or guilty.

I could not have said it better myself. In fact, in the beginning of the video, someone says, "he was runing from the cop". Skateboarding on a side walk is a civil infraction in many places that could get you a ticket. If the kid ran from the cop once he got busted skateboarding on the side walk, the civil infraction could turn into a misdemeanor charge of fleeing a police officer. Two sides to every story.

i would have made sure that as.shole cop lost his. job.

    1. It was National Go Skateboarding Day. The one day of the year kids can skate without getting tickets, yet some jerkwad cops still arrest kids every year for skating on that day.
    2. What ever happened to just a warning or a ticket? you don`t use that kind of brutality on skateboarders. they have just as much right as any other pedestrian.
    3. That amount of brutality is what you would expect to see for an armed robery. slamming a kid on the ground and grabbing a girl by the through is never ok unless its under dangerous or life threatening circumstances. no one was in danger.
    4. The cop got even madder when people tried to calm him down. And arrested the people that were telling him to stop. what the hell is his problem?

If i was there i would have been what the hell are you doing you fuc.kin retard, you NEVER hit or grab girls like that, unless they`re dangerous criminals or something.

And i know theres not one of you here, who if you were in one of the kids shoes when the girl was getting man handled that you wouldnt have done something about it. Even if that meant getting a possible battery or resisting arrest charge.

Not the first time I`ve seen this. Some buddies working at NHS (skateboard distribution company) showed me. People are up in arms about this. I`ve already gotten something on myspace with who to call and e-mail to have something done.
It isn`t the first Go Skateboarding Day that was ruined. Last year, some cities completely banned skateboading on that day. Hella stupid.
Nothing bad happened to me while I was skating, but one of my friends got detained for the night. Its a holiday celebrated by millions of skaters across the US (not sure if it is celebrated in other countries). Police need to realize that being total idiots isn`t going to make the next Go Skateboarding Day easier on them.
And, my God, that cop is one big sonuvabitch. You don`t treat a lady like that. Or any person who did nothing wrong, for that matter.

Especially considering that Congress recognized it three years ago... But really, who cares about them?

Not sure where this was, though, so I can`t comment.

While the resisting arrest charge is valid, if the reason for restraining is invalid, then, as my understanding is, so is the resistance charge. Additionally, the battery charge won`t hold, as it`s circumstantial to shorts on a sidewalk and pinning people.

And yes, this cop is an a**hole. For people defending all of them, really, don`t try too hard. It`s known that the profession attracts people with inferiority complexes, and it`s especially true of security guards and traffic patrol.

Whoever said that anyone who has anything against them has done something wrong: I`ve been hassled three times in the past for doing absolutely nothing.

Once was waiting on a sidewalk for a taxi because I "matched a description" of someone who was reported to be stashing beer cans in bushes on campus. Turns out the height was off by a foot, the coat was the wrong color, and the description mentioned a backpack, which I wasn`t wearing. Not to mention I was wearing facepaint at the time (you think they`d mention that in the description they`d report).

The second time I was pulled over driving and warned about the "move over" law, which, knowing my states law, was perfectly fine, but the cop had to make it known that he was aware of a neighboring state`s law that would have gotten me ticketed (and sadly, I was trying not to laugh at his gold tooth while he was yelling).

The third time was actually driving my mother to the hospital.

So yes, it`s definitely possible to have a grudge against patrolling cops and not having done anything worthy of it.

That fat slob of a cop should be arrested and charged with brutality. He was in no physical danger and all they kept asking was why are you doing this, and just for asking the next kid wound up on the ground. This bastard is an out of control maniac who should lose his job & all pension benefits and be sentenced to prison as well. Let`s see how the other inmates tolerate his bullpoo, and let`s see if they go down as easily as pre-pubescent skinny kids. Now I don`t like kids either, but I hate bullys like this drat that much more. If I had been there, I would have broken one of those skateboards over his head while he was busy beating on little kids. I believe that this bastard should have a red hot poker shoved up his ass and turned repeatedly until it is cool. In addition, his poor wife and children would be better off with him in prison because after seeing how he behaved here, we can be certain that he does the same type of thing at home. I hope that he dies painfully in prison.

I can`t say who was right or wrong in this, i have experienced good and bad cops and teenagers, however from a uk point of view it appeared over zealous of the cop no matter how pissed off he was.

What a great cop, This makes me want to be cop.
    Stick it to the preps!

I wish we had cops like this hero around my
town, Instead of the retarded donut-munching
bobby who spend his career standing by the road looking for speeders.

Cops are supposed to play by some rules as well. And just because someone is skateboarding in the wrong place and smart-mouthing at you, doesn`t mean you`re allowed to push them to the ground, strangle them and slap them around. The cop was just outta line. I`m sure the kids were annoying but the cops reaction was waaayyy OTT. They were tiny little kids for chrissake, if they kid refused to listen he could`ve grabbed his wrist and taken his board away or something...

And by the way - they banned skating because it was skating day???? How the hell can you ban skating??? I understand banning it in private areas but on a street walk that belongs to everyone! WTF? Lemme know when they ban bicycling too. This is some serious only-in-america crap... :D

Hahaha, whatever. If they were just skateboarding, then the cop just was just being an non-nice individual, and if the kids were doing more before the camera started then the kids got what came to them. :-D

Anybody trying to defend that cop on the grounds that the skater said something, or gave him the finger to initiate that, has a moral dilemma of their own. If somebody on the street gives me the finger, do I get to man-handle them? Not without going to jail I don`t.

When I was much younger (16 I think), a few friends and I shouted pig at a cop while passing by a traffic stop. They finished(I`m assuming anyway), found us and did a felony stop at gunpoint. Other than just shouting a word at them, we`d done nothing wrong. We probably shouldn`t have been shouting at cops, and they did let us go, but if you can`t handle being called a name, you certainly should not be a cop.

Of course I don`t know how this incident actually started, I`m just saying IF thats all this was, learn to live with it. It won`t be the last time some snotty nosed kid swears at you, or flips you off. Most mature law-abiding citizens respect the cops for what they do, and that should be good enough for them.

in the article it stated that skateboarding has been a problem in that area for a while.what has the community done to address the problem ? have they tried to talk to the skateboarders to see what brings them to that area to skate? if there is no designated place for them to skate then where do they go ? the cop has a job to do . when store front owners call and complain they have to respond. maybe he should have approuch them in a different manor. he is an adult and a police officer. he has been given authority that civilians don`t have, and with that comes responsibility. these are punk kids that don`t think of consequences of there actions and can easily get themselves into trouble like every one of us has when we where there age. the cop was a rookie and made a rookie mistake which he should pay for . luckily no body was seriuosly hurt. i blame the city for not addressing the needs of the kids in there community.

stop steriotyping. that cop was a moron. i dont really care what was going on but if i was being all cool and stuff and i was trying to help my friend out who was being manhandled by the cop and he decided to get my back and neck... i dont care if he`s a cop or not... no one will ever do that to me. i would have busted his face in with the skateboard.
any one who says that they were just punks and deserve it... you clearly dont have skater friends... yeah there are some dumb ones, but all we really care about is having fun... we dont go around trying to anger cops and break laws

Hmmmm... no skateboarding on sidewalks. And there`s obviously none in the middle of the street. So that means there`s pretty much no use for a skateboard in that town besides to use it at a skate park, which the stupid city officials probably passed a law against, too. I hate how skateboarders treat kids like me, but this really makes you want to stand up for them.
