`what the F*CK!!! is a kowtow.`
It`s a verb. And it means to acquiesce, but with connotations of subservience.

Anyway, I know all of the sensible ones except `ziggurat` and `winnow`. And by sensible, I mean `not referring to US law, etc`, which I can`t possibly be expected to be aware of.
Having said that, I am a language geek studing English at University with the aim of getting a PhD, so it might be a bit unrealistic to expect every highschool student to know 100% of those.

See, I think you`re close enough with "sanguine," as far as recognizing it with no context on some list. The important thing is knowing these words when you encounter them in reading or conversation, and with added context, I bet you`d be able to make that leap.

I agree. We use a vocabulary program in my school where time constraints necessitate cutting some corners, and I always give less attention to the really, really technological and scientific terms, or terms that have more selective use. Nothing against any of them; it`s just that "hemoglobin" isn`t going to work itself into conversation as easily as "auspicious."

Okay this is obviously built on American education where you only get real high school level when you hit University since all of the US educational policies are built on `stabalized learning` which is in actual fact gibberish for `keep them dumb until they prove themselves`. You don`t get a worthwhile education in the US.

There are just a few words I do not know, but that I have never seen nor read in my extensive studies. Nor have I seen any business use them. So, while I am not saying they are useless, I would say they are rarely needed, if ever.

But, then again, they are just saying that if you know these words and how to properly use them, probably means you have a strong command of the english language.
