One question I have is if I was some warrior during roman/medieval times wondering which job should I sign up for, what the drat does the elimination of a person from a singing contest that occurs hundreds of years in the future have to do with anything?

Actually they`d stand at the front or sides of armies and do almost as much fighting as the men-at-arms, especially when they made up the majority of the army, which they often did.
