Ok, a) a heart attack is not when your heart stops - it`s when an artery gets blocked and some of your heart muscle dies. This may lead to cardiac arrest and death, but often doesn`t.
b) I really hope this doesn`t get about too much, otherwise in 18months time when I`m declaring someone dead, the relatives will say "oh, but he`s not dead, I read an article that said he`ll be alive for x hours after his heart stops. Do something, doctor" And then I`ll be sued when I don`t stick him in the fridge and get his heart going again slowly enough to not kill him.
c) I actually find this slightly insensitive to those of us who have suffered a recent bereavement. To think that a close family member was lying in a mortuary while still alive is not that pleasant.

So to say...a heart attack only makes you clinically dead, not dead as in beyond the point of no return. Or until some scientist figures how to reverse the breaking down of rotting corpses through the use of extracted tissue to rebuild them. Is that considered cloning? Is it even possible?

Being dead is not all its cracked up to be. I feel out of a tree when i was 13 and smashed my head open in 2 places (cheak out scar on me forehead) and lost alot of blood. Apprety my heart had stopped for 2 mins in hospital and YES there is a bright light.
It was the light on the celing and my eyes was diluting so it looked brighter ;-/
Anyhoo if there is a heaven and hell I did not see it so that means you have to be dead longer then 2 mins to see anything.

ShadyJaney is a 13-17 year old who talks like she`s a doctor or something. It`s wonderful to learn from a 14 year old how my body works.

That happened with my grandpa. He had a heart attack and was dead for like five minutes but was saved.
Now he`s in the hospital with a bad broken hip :-(

Damn, I hope they perfect this by the time I get old and withered. That would kick ass.

And everybody giving crap about the spiritual side and everything, hopefully doing this to a patient will finally prove that God is a load of bullpoo.

I love how scientists come up with these amazing discoveries!
Like instead of giving shots of vaccine for little kids and babies, they are making strips like those breath strips to make your breath smell better.

Yes well, we don`t all believe in Heaven and Hell, ShadyJaney. To me the idea of God and stuff is f*cking stupid. And you`re ideas are like Disney Cartoons. :]

Clinical death is the immediate precursor to biological death. Without prompt CPR the person will probably enter biological death within a few minutes. Once people enter biological death they usually aren`t revived because nerve cells immediately die. And even if they are revived they probably will have suffered some tissue loss (especially brain damage) due to oxygen deprivation, and if not promptly revived they will suffer complete tissue death.

When someone is declared clinically dead they only have residual nerve activity in the body, and cell metabolism ends due to lack of oxygen.

This article isn`t referring to actual death, just to heart failure. It isn`t news that you can use a heart-lung bypass machine to keep someone alive, it`s the foundation of many cardiovascular surgeries.

And Baalthazaq, don`t mistake your beliefs for everyones. I`m sure you`d agree we`re all entitled to our own ideas, and I don`t appreciate mine being compared to disney cartoons

Interesting. But I`d have my family made into carbon based diamonds before they even have a chance to get revived so HA!

Well oddflame, thank you for telling us that!
If in the unfortunate event, you would be lying braindead in the hospital, we know that you won`t be wanting to come back!

There was actually a case of Zombism in Cambodia as reported by the BBC but make sure you also read what Snopes has to say about it. ;)

On a more serious note though you do have Sleeping Sickness.

Thanks Baalthazaq.

It`s quite awful that still all the time we discover new things that we have done completely wrong without realising it. I really wonder what else so unquestionable is going to be turned upside down.

Gotta love theology/religious philosophy from people without a clue.

1) The whole point of this article is pretty much that they`re *not* dead when they announce "clinical death", but that the resuscitation process kills them beyond a certain point.

2) The idea that you go directly to heaven/hell is more common in Disney cartoons than any theology.

3) Is there any reason your spirit would leave as soon as the heart stops for 10 seconds compared to 15 mins, compared to 2 hours, compared to the spirit leaving and coming back in the peak or lull of every heartbeat?

This is creeping me out! If someone can be revived after a few hours that only means we do not have Spirit! It would equally mean that when we die we just end our existence. FUC K! I`m going to Amesterdam and fill my veigns with Cannabis!

"New world record spot: Lengthiest time dead before being revived"
Anybody ever see that movie where these college medical students tried to see how long they could "kill" themselves before being brought back. Then after that they started having freaky hallucinations.
?
Great movie.

I thought body revival after a short term loss had been possible for a long time. Either way, it gives people less to worry about.

God, think of the spiritual side. Would that person go to heaven or hell? Would they come back?

Yikes.

I don`t understand how they`re saying that the "brain has shut down to conserve oxygen". I was under the impression that quite the opposite occurred during an emergency, that only the nervous, circular, and respirotory (and maybe the urninary, I`m not as familiar with my physiology) systems remained active, to keep the brain supplied with oxygen.

Nervous tissue can`t survive without oxygen because of the accelerated metabolism in it, and it isn`t reproduced because of it`s inherent longevity, so any brain damage done would be permanent.
