I like how the cameraman lost his sh*t as soon the lightning hit the tree. He basically dove to the ground! Then again, I don`t think I would even be *looking* outside during a thunderstorm

crazy. a cousin of mine was stuck by lightning once...she survived (luckily). If it had been like the bolt that hit that tree, I think it would have been a different story.

That`s pretty accurate B-Hazard. This vid is incredible because it happened so close to the observer. Thankfully, I`ve see lighting hit a tree and shatter the topmost branches into splinters but from a healthy distance.

-"A hundred lightning bolts do hit Earth every second—and more than eight million hit Earth every year." - Lightning: The Deadly Truth -

Is it just me or is that completely wrong? Just off the top of my head, but, I`d think 100 a second would average out a little higher than 8 million in a year.

a little known fact about lightning:
When lightning strikes you, it is so hot that it explodes the sweat on your body forcefully enough to rip all your clothes off

If you`ve ever seen a that has been hit by lightning, you will notice that some things could have happend.
1) Nothing
2) Limb broke off tree
3) Burnt

The reason why you really dont want to stand near a tree, would be because the lightning instantly heats up the water and sap inside a tree, and when a limb bursts off, the hot liquid will burn the §hit out of your skin. Not to mention all the flying splinters and other larger peices of wood.

one we were at lake powell and the lightening hit the rocks on the beach where our boat was anchored. we were all up top and it was literally like 20 ft away. it was so loud! i guesss we should seen what it did to the rocks, they were those red sandstone rocks.

@[email protected] :-)

I do that trick where every second that passes before hearing a BOOM is equivalent to 1 mile away....It always strikes really far away from me :-P.

I also remember that the whole "lightning never strikes the same spot twice" is complete bullsh*t. Lightning strikes the Empire State Building several times a year.

Just found this on the internet :-). I didn`t do anything to make sure it was 100% accurate information but I got it off of this website (warning for all those who like information well researched)

it`s supposedly beautiful when lightning strikes the beach, rare as I imagine it to be because of height issues, because the heat creates a glass sculpture a few feet large in the sand
i remember seeing a picture a long time ago, but my memory could be getting fuzzy
