Yea it might be gross but its a disease so don`t go taking the piss. People don`t choose to live that way you know so don`t be so offensive just because you don`t understand this illness. As horrid as it seems if this woman hasn`t got help by now she is probly dead and we are all making fun out of her. You wouldn`t make fun of a person who has cancer so why would you make fun of this? Have some respect people, and no i`m not aiming this at all of you just some of you who think its alright to make others feel small. And no I`m not anorexic and I am not defending people who actually want to have an eating disorder I just don`t think this is right.

One group, maybe two, must be totally wrong. I think all the tiny coments dotted around saying how stupid we are are fully justified.

What`s important isn`t how it`s defined.. It`s how people with this disorder/disease/mental illness (delete as apropriate) are treated. And that`s with open minds and understanding.

I think this whole argument escelated due to xxxana`s lack of understanding, and the group`s desire to put him straight.

Yo, hands up who thinks it was worth while?

Whoa. I only went to play that damned Zombie game for a short while, and you guys are still at it. And.. wow.

PUI.. I would be so saddened beyond belief to hear what you just said had i not already known that you have a loving boyfriend and an otherwise happy life. My girl doesn`t have an eating disorder, but she looses weight regularly and has to make an effort to put it back on.
I don`t know what it`s like to have a disorder such as yours, nor do i really know how i`d manage if my girl did, but i do know i`d give her all the love and support a man can give. The best i can do (and so all i really ever do) is tell her how much i love her and hope that everything else in her life is as comfortable as possible..

As for this entire thread.. It seems it`s now just an argument about whether or not anorexia is a disease, a disorder, a mental illness, all three.. or whatever.
But you guys know what? It either is, or it isn`t. Us arguing over it won`t change its definition.

"And your `emphasis on nutritional imbalance`: that`s a cause of illness, like i said. It translates to `there is a nutritional imbalance BECAUSE of the fact they eat so badly`."

No, the nutritional imbalance is the qualifer. It establishes that if, for whatever reason, a person`s eating habits become unbalanced (unhealthy, to be more precise), that condition then becomes a disease and should be treated as such. Obesity is a disease along the same vein. Even if you don`t agree with that rationale, my definition extended into `unfavorable environmental factors`, which goes back to what I wrote above.

"And I`m pretty sure noone `prefers` to look at anorexics rather than at normal looking people."

Aside from all these pro-anorexia people you are so on about, you mean?

"overmann: as i said the only thing anorexia has in common with a disease is not that it is one, but that it causes health problem."

Let us endeavor, keeping your definition of a disease in mind, to think about this logically: Disease causes health problems. Anorexia causes health problems. Disease can be caused by environmental stress. Anorexia is caused by environmental stress. (I gathered you`d agree it`s caused by conditioning, which certainly qualifies as the aforementioned stress). Therefore, anorexia nervosa qualifies as a disease. You haven`t addressed my definition of a disease so I broke down your own logic, as I see it, for you. As you can see, it`s at odds with what you are trying too hard to claim.

"A disease is a condition of an organism that impairs physiological functioning, resulting from causes such as infection, genetic defect, or environmental stress (American Heritage Dictionary). There is no infection or genetic defect. maybe it`s the environmental stress then? well, they have pills for that: http://www.add-adhd-help-center.com/stre...

First of all, your definition of environmental stress seems hopelessly narrow and confined, and I suspect that that is what lies at the root of your misunderstanding. Here`s a much better definition. In reading it, you`ll realize harmful lifestyle expectations qualify as stress.

One of the many differences between you and I is that I know what i am talking about; thats what happens when you avail yourself of the facts in a controlled and constructive way rather than googling frantically to try and back yourself up once youre requested to substantiate your views. Not only have i studied and researched the things you are so ignorant about, but i also have a wider education concerning mental health issues in general and have friends who deal with them everyday of their lives.
When i say you are or will be A, B and C its not coming from me, it is coming from well established data and research. Mental health studies were established well before the 20th century, tho most ppl tend to assume conditions like anorexia werent recognised till the second have of the 20th century.
I do derive satisfaction educating ppl about issues i care about or pointing them towards resources that help them to educate themse

I didn`t say this before... but xxxana, I suffer from anorexia. I was diagnosed 2 years ago and I have been in and out of the hospital ever since. I battle this every day... and I wish beyond wishes that I could just snap out of it! I wish I could just turn everything around! I really wish that I could be normal and be happy... but I CAN`T. I do not have a choice... and it hurts me that you actually think that I willingly choose to live like this. It`s not an addiction to dieting either... It`s a life of fear, loneliness and obsession... It`s painful... and it consumes my whole life...

You cant just tell someone with anorexia to "just gain weight" That is not going to work as it is their sheer fear of food or gaining weight that is the problem.

You have to get to the root of the psychological reasonings behind the conditions before just telling them to gain weight.

I have no family members who have it, but a friend almost died from it, and I studdied it for three years while doing a-level biology and psychology.

Out of curiosity, do you have a family member with anorexia you? Typically only family members tend to have such violently held oppositional beliefs about this disease.

I`m sorry if you do. I think you could help them more by trying to understand them than telling them to stop.

Regardless of the cause once the process has started it is just as easy to tell a schizophrenic to not be psychotic as it is to tell an anorexic to just gain weight.

I see what you mean now.

No, xxxana, you can`t get rheumatism by thinking you will, but it isn`t the desire for thinness that axorexics ultimately crave. Its the desire for control. They may not be able to answer directly, but ask anyone who has successfully treated an anorexic and they will echo the same.

Similarly, you could desire to eat brains and unintensionally give youself kuru. I agree its a little thin, but I hope you see my point.

The desire for thinness is a symptom and not the disease itself.

How did it not make sense?

If you get cancer you get it for real too. But it can go into remission. Just like anorexia.

So the possibility of remission can`t rule out real disease.

Explain what you think is the difference between a disease and a condition.

Razzed, welcome to the thread, it`s great to see another person with common sense. I was going to use that comparison between heroin addicts and anorexics myself actually later on, but you beat me to it :)
Fanaticirony: so now we`re going to blame someone else? Every can do that: I`m not fat, it`s the fault of McDonalds. I`m not stupid, it`s television`s fault. I`m not a drunk, it`s the fault of that bar around the corner for serving cheap beer. I`m not a drug addict, it`s society`s fault. I`m not too thin, it`s the fault of the fashion and modeling industry. They have nobody to blame but themselves. I see men with 6packs in magazines too, does that mean I`m going to start drinking protein shakes and work out 20 times more than I do now just to look like that? No, I have a will of my own.
And for rape: that`s the fault of the agressor. I truly believe that rapist should have their "weapon" removed and horrible things should be done to them, hell, I`d even do it myself.

Lets settle this.
According to both the ICD-9/10 and the DSM-IV, two nearly universally accepted medical diagnostic catalogues, anorexia nervosa is a disease.

NOT A CHOICE! An Illness! Multfactorial, difficult to treat, with genetic, physiologic, social, and psychologic bases.

You might as well think a person is at fault if their parents burn down their house.

Just for fun, here`s a list of diseases from a medical dictionary.

Interestingly, anorexia is not on that list(unless they call it something else).

It`s a mental disorder, it`s not a mental disease like alzheimers. It`s actually more akin to a drug addiction. Help is available to anorexics and I have no more sympathy for them than I do for heroin addicts.

Anorexic person is someone who stops eating yes? And so does not get enough neutrients to survive. You can be 100000000 lbs (If it was possible to be still alive then), stop eating and you will be classed as anorexic. The weight is not what classes you as anorexic, it is the stopping of eating.

Oh, hey, we`re on to blame-passing? WAS it her fault? Or was it partly the fault of the bad influences on her? From the whole modeling profession?

Companies are selling products like padded bras and panties with cute logos on them to girls as young as eight, even younger. They`re influenced by TV and advertising.. and so they consider it normal to dress such a way.
Teens are taken advantage of because girls are being shown as objects of desire from a younger and youner age, and that`s all because of influences from the media and such.
So how bout the subject of rape? Dare we enter that into this forum of free and open discussion? Is it the fault of a girl, influenced by models to wear revealing clothes, if she is percieved as a sexual object? How bout that one?

Congratulations to xxxana who can quote South Park and then recast it so it supports the argument. How utterly specious. How about areal medical reference?

I think you will find the parts about twin studies showing anorexia nervosa to be at least partially genetically determined. Ironically "taking control" is losing control.

Other parts bear quoting:
"Treatment of anorexia nervosa is challenging and complicated....Denial of the seriousness of the illness is common in patients. Patients` family members often prefer physiological over psychological explanations for the disorder.... [the cause"> appears to be multidetermined. Consequently, treatment should be multimodal and include a combination of approaches.

*Flexibility and realistic goals are essential. *Long-term follow-up may be necessary.
*Inpatient hospitalization may be neces

laurinnnn, "thin" and "anorexic" are very, very different things. I`m sure if you touch your butt/chest, you`ll feel that you`ve still got something to jiggle or grab. Do the same with an anorexic, and you`ll feel bones, which is a turn-off.

Hold up.. I don`t agree with the way it`s said, nor the ignorance behind it (denying that anorexia is a disease, a disorder being a disease). But.. well this guy clearly has his mind set on these views and these alone. Fair play to ya, you`re clearly strong willed. But..

objective perspective, not opinion.

I think we are all more than aware that xxxana has an ignorance of mental illness; you can console yourselves with the fact that the likely hood that he either a) suffers with a mental illness b) will suffer with a mental illness c) will have someone close to him develop a mental illness, is extremely high.
Thankfully, most ppl manage to grow out of their ignorances through practical experience. Everyone, as long as they have the capacity to humble them selves in order to learn has the opportunity to develop humanity in themselves; it’s the rejection of those opportunities that turn you into an inhumane, stunted personality.

No, they can`t. See, you just don`t get it. You don`t understand the power of the mind and how it can affect perception. In the mind of an anorexic, there is a real problem. Accordingly, they act to correct the perceived problem in a way that, to them, makes sense.

They cannot choose how they perceive the world. And hunger is very psychological anyways. If you have an improper balance in your brain, then your brain cannot properly monitor the levels of fats and amino acids in the blood and cannot trigger hunger. This balance is skewed by anorexia, which is a disorder of the brain.

It can further be aggravated by social pressures, just like schizophrenia can be aggravated by periods of high emotional discourse.

Anorexics have no more control over how they perceive the world than you have control over your compulsion to continually respond to this thread.

FunkyZ: yes and yes. Both are illnesses. But I keep by my point that anorexia is unlike those diseases, and that it is indeed a choice. the main reason why they call it a disease is because it`s the easy way out, so they can say it`s not their own fault, because it`s a disease. If you can, please watch South Park episode 914 (Bloody Mary), and replace every word that means "alcoholism" to "anorexia", it`ll make sense.
Alutard: I`m not an non-nice individual, I`m very selfless and compassionate and empathic to those who deserve it. Anorexics don`t, they themselves are to blame for their own problem. If they would just eat as much as everyone else at their dinner table, they would be fine, but if they`re eating lettuce while the others are eating steak, and don`t see that there is something wrong with that, then they`re stupid, not ill.

xxxanna, if you could cope with it, it wouldnt bother you enough to spend so much time refuting every comment made; but you are still here, still posting, still trying to maintain under the pretence that this is a `discussion`. I dont know what your template is, but this isnt what discussion or debate looks like to ppl who have to do it as part of there job; in situations where it very much counts.
You lack objectivity and self awareness and your apparent inability to access or develop empathy/ compassion/ informed understanding in your self is (in itself) a form of mental retardation and inadequacy. The fact that the primary topic of this post was a woman with anorexia (a result of mental malfunction in perception) is quite ironic.

In my opinion, he seems to base his determination that anorexia is not a disease on the notion that sufferers are capable of recognizing their own physical state and that their subsequent actions (i.e. refusing to eat) are based solely in choice.

However, he seems incapable of grasping the notion that the core of anorexia is skewed perception. That altered perception is the basis for the altered actions (i.e. change in eating habits).

He seems to be saying to sufferers of anorexia (nervosa, just so were aren`t splitting hairs later) should be able to just start eating normally. I`m sure he would be an incredibly effective therapist. After all, what better advice is there for a sufferer of a mental illness than to "just stop it"?

Really, I don`t want to upset anyone, but don`t you think you`ve argued enough? People have a right to have their own opinion, but they should also be prepared for people to disagree with them. laurinnn: you are really, really stupid to start a fight over this kind of thing. xxxana: you are an non-nice individual and probaply proud of it, but please, be an non-nice individual by yourself and don`t show it to people, very few people like non-nice individuals.

xxxana: You have offered a very poor definition of `disease`. May I refer you to a more thorough definition instead. Besides the definition you previously proffered was an inclusive not exclusive list.

Answer this one question please: Are schizophrenia or bipolar disorder diseases?

I`m looking forward to the conglomeration of poor logic and distraction that you will use to avoid a yes or no question with clearly only one correct answer.

laurinnn: Pretty short actually. I was on this thread too long last night, so I slept until half past 1 pm. Which is odd for me as I usually wake up between 6 and 9 am.
Baby_bear: You`re right about the entertainment value of this thread. I`d enjoy reading it too if I weren`t in it. Big Brother is bottom-feeding television though, and I wouldn`t be caught dead watching it, let alone be on it. This conversation is too intelligent to ever be on BB anyways.
I can`t cope with confrontation??? I`ve been confronting people in this topic, and replying to their comments all the time... If I couldn`t cope with it, I wouldn`t be answerring anymore...
And for the lack of self-confidence? I`m the most self-confident person I know. I say what I want, I do what I want, and I don`t go home crying in the dark, cutting or starving myself because people don`t like me. I wouldn`t make comments on anorexics if I was in any way feeling like them (unaccepted by the world).

so shoot me for enjoying a spectacle; hey, we need something to replace the old freak shows no? come awn, its human nature to be quietly fascinated by others absurd delusions is it not? I agree that this `melee` as you call it is fuelled by one participants inability to release control of the situation and cope with any kind of confrontation, which I would assume stems from a lack of self confidence; it simply means `too much` and that is sad to watch but the gall that some ppl display with ill thought out, badly constructed, inadequately researched `reasoning` unfortunately has a base entertainment value that can be v seductive in itself. If this xxxana guy was on Big Brother the ratings would go through the roof. Its like a care crash. It does make me feel a bit dirty. *slinks off*

This is not a debate. This is a melee and participation in such does nothing but aggravate its participants. And rightfully so. But, in any event, to take part in something like this while hiding behind the thin guise of "enjoying debate" is childish. Very few, if any of you, could survive in a genuine debate with rules of both structure and decency. The real reason you people keep going with this is because you have big egos and severe inferiority complexes.

All of those who profess their intelligence but keep up this `debate` truly show their level of intelligence.

I know there can be no winner (now, if we were facing eachother, charisma might be a weapon of persuasion and things could turn out differently), but it`s the fun of debating that makes me post comments. Not the will to convince people. I`m sure there are some people here who agree with me, and alot who agree with my opponents, but that doesn`t matter. The only thing that does matter is expressing your opinion.

I kind of regret posting before now because nothing anyone says is going to prove anything to anyone else. It`s not like anything i say is going to make xxxana say, "you know what? you`re right and i was wrong this whole time! Gee, thanks for enlightening me!" The same as he is not going to make any of us say that. Although we may not respect his opinion, we should all respect his right to have one.
And although i think he is completely and emphatically wrong, after all I have seen I really can`t say that he doesn`t seem intelligent just because he`s ideas are radical and disgusting to most of us. So, while we will run into people that we wholeheartedly disagree with, we just have to choose, as in the real world, to just not associate with them as it will make both their and our lives miserable over something we cannot change.

Incidentally, your questions that attempt to prove your point are also logic failures. All of them start with the assumption you are right.

Furthermore by posting "poll" questions, you are judging a matter on public opinion. By asking an indirect question you are showing that even you don`t think the direct question would be answered the way you want.

So does public opinion matter or not? Apparently only when it agrees with you. Logic failure, again and again and again.

Why not just ask if they think Anorexia is a disease or a lifestyle choice? I think the answer to what the public thinks of that is overtly apparent.

Poor poor xxx. All alone.

You probably have a job and do ok, don`t live on wellfare etc, because your posts tell me that you`re not of average intelligence. You also didn`t marry someone from your land of birth to import her (and her family) as well, so that`s ok. It`s those that come here and leech on our social services and wellfare that I don`t like. And you don`t know the situation here, so you can`t really argue about this subject, so let`s not talk about it. (And I replied to this part earlier because it was the shortest answer, not because it was a priority.)
I replied about the disease part, and as I said earlier, I wasn`t being serious about the amphibian part, so I didn`t answer to that.
I replied about the choice part as well, I don`t see where I don`t answer your comments...
Pro-ana is not an exception, I`m pretty sure of that. As soon as these people realise they`re anorexic, they`re bound to look for people who share their views.

As I said before, getting in the last word doesn`t make you right. Feel free to chat all you want but unless you actually answer anything I`ve put to you, your attempts at logic were still failures.

For someone claiming to cling so much to rationality your use of the main component of it is far below even the basic starting steps to adequacy, let alone a demonstration of the mastery you claim to have over it.

Pro-an is still the exception, and still gives no weight to your argument. Yet you`re still using it. Logic failure mr. rational.

If you call homosexuality a disease I can call you intolerant and ignorant for it as much as you did me for my opinion about anorexia.
I wanted to post some questions about it on youthink, but they got denied for being too one-sided. but I did get an interesting answer from one of the mods:
"The condition is a disorder, the eating habits are a choice. Equally as depression is not a choice, but behaviours that may arise from it are. (Moderator num. 118715241)".
I think he`s totally right. Maybe their brains are telling them to look thin, but to starve themselves is their own choice.

But dear xxxana, it IS a disease. The reason homosexuals think that way and live that way is because their brain and genes tells them to. The reason anorexics are living that way is because something in them is telling them that they aren`t looking right.

The reason they call it a disease is a psychological tactic, to absolve themselves of personal responsibility for their own actions. It makes it a lot easier explaining it away that way rather than say "I’m just a dumb person who is into impairing my health because I have insecurities about the way I look caused by air-brushed magazine pictures of famous models."

Homosexuality is actually a `disease` (in any case by your definition of a disease) as it is caused by a genetic disorder and a fault in the brain. Not that I think it`s such a horrible disease. But as it is a disease, anorexia is as well? You are really pissing me off.

Baalthazaq: Pro-ana doesn`t make it the norm, but anorexics tend to turn to groups like that, because it`s a place where they won`t be judged. As soon as they do that, it turns into a choice. They chose to go to the place that accepts them, rather than the place that would help them to turn normal. Anorexia is as much of a disease as homosexuality is.

...them able to infect more people (accidental or not). Those bugchasers are easily comparable to amorexics, it`s also a choice they make.
overmann: as i said the only thing anorexia has in common with a disease is not that it is one, but that it causes health problem. A disease is a condition of an organism that impairs physiological functioning, resulting from causes such as infection, genetic defect, or environmental stress (American Heritage Dictionary). There is no infection or genetic defect. maybe it`s the environmental stress then? well, they have pills for that: http://www.add-adhd-help-center.com/stre...
And your "emphasis on nutritional imbalance": that`s a cause of illness, like i said. It translates to "there is a nutritional imbalance BECAUSE of the fact they eat so badly".
And I`m pretty sure noone "prefers" to look at anorexics rather than at normal looking

Baalthazaq: I really don`t care if you`re Arab, some of my closest friends are... I`m not a racist, I`m a nationalist. I see you`re living in Asia, so I don`t really care with whom you "make babies". The thing I don`t like is people from any other country coming to mine, don`t want to adapt to our norms, and keep "import-marrying" (they marry someone from their native land, who automatically can become a citizen of my country, because she`s married to someone from my country, and this is an everlasting cycle because their children will do the same).
now for your comparison with those bugchasers. They make AIDS a choice, they`re an exception to people who have AIDS. I honestly dare say that people like that should be executed, and no, I`m not joking. One of the things I`m more scared of than anything is getting AIDS from someone who cuts me with a bloody razor blade or something.
I`m against AIDS treatments because they just keep the person alive longer, making

Getting in the last word doesn`t make you right. Logic failure on your part.
Fewer people would want to live in a world of you than a world of anorexics, yet you use that "logic" against anorexics but not your own opinions. Logic failure on your part.
You claimed they were less than human because of a lower body temperature, as the definition of humans doesn`t take that into consideration, logic failure on your part.
As you have denied it is a disease without any backing to your claim (or a posit), logic failure on your part.
Pro-An existing does not make it the norm. Nor does the existence of this makes AIDS a choice. Logic failure on your part.

You are not rational, you are ignorant.

I`m sure a lot more than 90 percent feel the world would be a better place without mental and physical illness. What`s your point? About the physical attractiveness, that`s a matter of perspective; surely you don`t feel you can speak for the personal tastes of other people who assuredly have different preferences than your own?

Emphasis should be placed on `nutritional deficiency or imbalance` in the Dictionary.com definition.

I`m curious. I`ve read through all your comments in this thread thus far but have not once glimpsed your definition for a disease. You cannot hope to dismiss others` definitions without supplying and defending your own.

"If they can choose to starve themselves to look like walking skeletons, i can choose to call them whatever i want."

Yes but that doesn`t mean either is in good taste. For that matter, it`s not choice if indeed anorexia is a compulsion as you claim.

xxxana, I don`t see any clear reason why a disease cannot relate to a disease of the mind. Typically we think of diseases affecting the physical body and not the mind, but one can all too easily forget that diseases of the mind are directly affected by chemical reactions and misfires. That is why medication is prescribed to help treat a number of mental illnesses.

But in any case, www.dictionary.com provides an adequate definition of a disease:

"1. a disordered or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the body resulting from the effect of genetic or developmental errors, infection, poisons, nutritional deficiency or imbalance, toxicity, or unfavorable environmental factors; illness; sickness; ailment."

In the case that you do not agree with that one, perhaps we can go a step further and generalize a disease to `any prevalent dysfunctional system or defect to a system`.

i have nothing against autistic people, because as you say, they aren`t that way by choice. Anorexics can choose to eat more and stop being like those models (btw, i think all models, but a few exceptions, are ugly as well, mainly for being thin). They can just stop eating lettuce with water and start eating like normal people. Autistic people can`t just snap out of it.
You can say what you want, but anorexia is not a disease, it`s a choice. the only thing anorexia has in common with diseases is that you are weak, unhealthy and your immune system goes down, but this is a CONSEQUENCE of the choice they made, and not an illness itself.
btw, a question for all guys here:
Do you prefer girls with something to grab (ie tits and butt), or girls that you can use as chopsticks with no libido ( anorexia screws up the hormones too, so these people probably are never in the mood for sex)

You know.. i agree with you saying they`re an error in the gene pool.. but not all errors are bad. Sure, this one disgusts you and makes the woman`s life a nightmare.. But does this attitude, that any anomoly in the genepool should be eradicated, stretch to ANY kind of difference from the norm? For example.. how bout autistic savants? That`s not a lifestyle choice at all, it`s a difference in genetics. It goes against the norm, should it be eradicated..?

Just wondering... why does that guy assume anorexia is not a disease? Just because it is a disease of the mind doesn`t make it any less valid than say, AIDS, a disease of the immune system. Why would someone CHOOSE to be that way, its a horrible way to live. Hasn`t he ever heard of chemical imbalances in the brain? It`s sad to know that there is such ignorance in the world, but at least he seems to be in the minority.

And you never know, he could just be one of those people that get off to making other people get upset. If so, that sounds like a mental illness as well. Let us all just choose to feel sorry for him, that he has to live in a world filled with his own hate and intolerance.

The only way the effects can be lessened is to change the views of people without anorexia. I don`t know what it`s like to have anorexia, the same as i don`t know what it`s like to be an eight foot tall black woman with eleven fingers. If i`m not it, i don`t know how it feels to be it. But i do respect other peoples` privacy.
This woman, nausiating as she may seem to others with weak stomachs and probably weak minds, is still a woman. Still a living breathing human being. If nothing else, at least respect her for being human.

..I think such totatitarian views on the elimination of a whole group of people is called `genocide` no matter who it concerns or how it is phrased. But.. yes, things like this need to be stopped.
The thing is, they can`t just be stopped so easily. They`re deep rooted problems. To solve the problem of anorexia is to solve the problem of unhappiness. Impossible.

My EQ (i`ll assume this is emotional quotient) is just fine thank you very much. I have a girlfriend, I love her with all my heart, but if she suddenly decides to become an anorexic or something, i`d have to slap her out of it (or, break up, which is probably what I`d do, but only after trying to talk her out of it). I don`t want to have anything to do with people like that.

"they WANT to look that way." Nobody wants to look that way. People suffering from anorexia nervosa (i`ll call the beastie by it`s name) think they look fat and want to look thin to put it simple. This isn`t necessarily the way they want to look, they might even see that this is sickening. But from their point of view, they themselves are fat.

Get your definitions right. Amphibians can live on land AND in water. Do you really think a human can survive in water just with themselves and nothing else? Don`t your fingers get all wrinkly after being in the water too long? How dare you say that they aren`t people?

@jaiantopanda and the person who quoted the dictionary: anorexia is the term to describe that stick-look. this can be caused by lack of appetite (because of a disease or otherwise). the term "anorexia nervosa" is used to describe people who stop eating on purpose, they WANT to look that way.

btw, anorexics aren`t people.
A real woman has periods, because of what they`re doing, anorexics can stop having them.
Their body temperature drops, so that makes them equal to amphibians. although some amphibians taste good, i`ll put anorexics rigth below them on my scale of value.

Um.. Deep-rooted emotional issues, possibly from an early age. Envy her? Try not eating for three days. Then try six.

and your dictionary reference tells me that anorexia means those two things. BUT, we are talking about the second one, anorexia nervosa, which is not caused by a disease.
And i`m not going to get a mental illness, my mind is perfectly fine, thank you very much. some people think my way of thinking is too rational, but i just keep my emotional side and my rational side apart. I dream of a utopia, but to get there, we need to get rid of some... anomalies.

If they can choose to starve themselves to look like walking skeletons, i can choose to call them whatever i want.
I have no sympathy for illegal immigrants going on hunger strike to become legal citizens in a country either. You did something wrong, you get punished (get sent back to whatever country you`re from). You starve yourself to neardeath (and in many cases, actual death), that`s your own fault, not mine. Me calling them fat is acutally good for them, because it helps them get closer to their goal of being invisible (which can be two things: they are so freaking thin they can hide behind a bamboo stick, or they die and i don`t have to see them anymore either, fine by me)

AIDS = a failure in one or more organisms in the body, making the immune system break down. That`s a disease, caused by an infection. Where`s the infection with anorexia? where`s the genetic diefect??? People choose to be anorexic. i`ve never heard of someone who chose to have AIDS...
Starving yourself of the food you need is not a disease, but a compulsion. pro-ana people actually don`t consider it a disease themselves, but a way of life. so i don`t have the smallest bit of sympathy for them. Even more, they encourage eachother to act anorexic, so it`s more like a cult.
If someone acts like a pussy, i`m calling him a pussy. if someone acts like a freak, i`m calling him a freak. If someone acts like a freaking twig, i`m calling them fat because i don`t want to see ugly people infesting my beachview. Let`s say you`re enjoying an ice cream, sitting on a towel, staring at the ocean. suddenly one of those nasty things passes by. that sure will f*ck your day up, right?

So now you promote the genocide of the mentally ill? What IS the difference between anorexia and aids or herpes or chicken pox? It`s the body`s response to something. Same as anorexia. There`s generally chemical reasons for a person to be mentally ill. This has nothing to do with eyesight. It`s about control and perception and fear. Your callousness only serves to show your ignorance.

@-all you idiots who think i`m wrong-: we need to cleanse this world of people like this.
AIDS, herpes, the flu, the common cold, chicken pox, those are diseases. Anorexia is NOT. Seriously, if she`d take a picture of herself, and lays it next to a picture of the model/actress she wants to look like, there`s no way she can say that she`s still fatter than the model.
Or if she went shopping for clothes, doesn`t she realize she`s swimming in even the smallest outfits? Besides, men don`t like ultra-skinny girls. We all want something to grab while we make love (and no, fake tits don`t count). It`d probably feel like you were f*cking a stick with hair...
I don`t have a fetish, but if I had to choose between this thing and a fat girl, I`d take the fat girl.

xxxana: you really ARE stupid.

Anorexia is a serious mental condition. PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM ANOREXIA CANNOT HELP IT, as much as they would like to just be happy with themselves, they can`t be. It`s much more complex then just wanting to be thinner and it goes beyond just their perception of themselves. It`s about wanting control over their own lives, anxiety/fear of not being accepted or not being good enough and obsessive compulsive behavior. It`s about years and years of hunger and pain because they are trying to fill a void in themselves they can`t seem to fill. Anorexia is the psychiatric condition that claims the most lives. Do you have any sympathy for people with Depression? Or Anxiety disorders? What about those with Schizophrenia? People who suffer from all these conditions cannot help what they feel or what they see/hear and neither can a person with anorexia.
