Why are so scarred?
Who did you almost lose to anorexia?
I`m honestly interested now. This is way better than TV.
At the very least I`d like to see your response to my last line of posting.
*Shakes hands with everyone* Night all.
What`s important isn`t how it`s defined.. It`s how people with this disorder/disease/mental illness (delete as apropriate) are treated. And that`s with open minds and understanding.
I think this whole argument escelated due to xxxana`s lack of understanding, and the group`s desire to put him straight.
Yo, hands up who thinks it was worth while?
PUI.. I would be so saddened beyond belief to hear what you just said had i not already known that you have a loving boyfriend and an otherwise happy life. My girl doesn`t have an eating disorder, but she looses weight regularly and has to make an effort to put it back on.I don`t know what it`s like to have a disorder such as yours, nor do i really know how i`d manage if my girl did, but i do know i`d give her all the love and support a man can give. The best i can do (and so all i really ever do) is tell her how much i love her and hope that everything else in her life is as comfortable as possible..
As for this entire thread.. It seems it`s now just an argument about whether or not anorexia is a disease, a disorder, a mental illness, all three.. or whatever. But you guys know what? It either is, or it isn`t. Us arguing over it won`t change its definition.
"maybe it`s the environmental stress then? well, they have pills for that: http://www.add-adhd-help-center.com/stre...
Why should they need pills if anorexia is not a disease, assuming pills such as those would even help in this case?
No, the nutritional imbalance is the qualifer. It establishes that if, for whatever reason, a person`s eating habits become unbalanced (unhealthy, to be more precise), that condition then becomes a disease and should be treated as such. Obesity is a disease along the same vein. Even if you don`t agree with that rationale, my definition extended into `unfavorable environmental factors`, which goes back to what I wrote above.
"And I`m pretty sure noone `prefers` to look at anorexics rather than at normal looking people."
Aside from all these pro-anorexia people you are so on about, you mean?
Let us endeavor, keeping your definition of a disease in mind, to think about this logically: Disease causes health problems. Anorexia causes health problems. Disease can be caused by environmental stress. Anorexia is caused by environmental stress. (I gathered you`d agree it`s caused by conditioning, which certainly qualifies as the aforementioned stress). Therefore, anorexia nervosa qualifies as a disease. You haven`t addressed my definition of a disease so I broke down your own logic, as I see it, for you. As you can see, it`s at odds with what you are trying too hard to claim.
First of all, your definition of environmental stress seems hopelessly narrow and confined, and I suspect that that is what lies at the root of your misunderstanding. Here`s a much better definition. In reading it, you`ll realize harmful lifestyle expectations qualify as stress.
I do derive satisfaction educating ppl about issues i care about or pointing them towards resources that help them to educate themselves, but in xxxana, his conduct and his obvious personal difficulties which im not about to make allowances for make me find it hard to care.Giving him the attention he craves probably isnt doing him any favours.
You have to get to the root of the psychological reasonings behind the conditions before just telling them to gain weight.
I have no family members who have it, but a friend almost died from it, and I studdied it for three years while doing a-level biology and psychology.
Agreed, disease affects your immune system, while mental conditions affect your behaviour and thought patterns.
I`m sorry if you do. I think you could help them more by trying to understand them than telling them to stop.
Regardless of the cause once the process has started it is just as easy to tell a schizophrenic to not be psychotic as it is to tell an anorexic to just gain weight.
No, xxxana, you can`t get rheumatism by thinking you will, but it isn`t the desire for thinness that axorexics ultimately crave. Its the desire for control. They may not be able to answer directly, but ask anyone who has successfully treated an anorexic and they will echo the same.
Similarly, you could desire to eat brains and unintensionally give youself kuru. I agree its a little thin, but I hope you see my point.
The desire for thinness is a symptom and not the disease itself.
This is basically saying that it is mental, not a disease. Although once you have the onset of the eating disorder it then shows the symptoms of a disease, but to begin with it is to do with the persons mind.
I think that makes sense.
If you get cancer you get it for real too. But it can go into remission. Just like anorexia.
So the possibility of remission can`t rule out real disease.
Explain what you think is the difference between a disease and a condition.
Each happens randomly, and each is influenced by personal choice. Pray you never get one.
You`re right, sorry guys, I`m way too tired for this today.
Regardless, I still don`t see how it classifies as a disease, it`s a mental disorder, but either way, they can`t get better unless they go to some sort of rehab center for anorexia.
I propose that you couldn`t tell a disease from the collective cracks in your behinds. Please describe your medical training. Anyone? Oh wait, you have none. Am I right? Of course I am.
Because by the definitions seen here today none ofthese are
Strange how compulsions work, isn`t it?
NOT A CHOICE! An Illness! Multfactorial, difficult to treat, with genetic, physiologic, social, and psychologic bases.
You might as well think a person is at fault if their parents burn down their house.
thank you come again
Interestingly, anorexia is not on that list(unless they call it something else).
It`s a mental disorder, it`s not a mental disease like alzheimers. It`s actually more akin to a drug addiction. Help is available to anorexics and I have no more sympathy for them than I do for heroin addicts.
Companies are selling products like padded bras and panties with cute logos on them to girls as young as eight, even younger. They`re influenced by TV and advertising.. and so they consider it normal to dress such a way.Teens are taken advantage of because girls are being shown as objects of desire from a younger and youner age, and that`s all because of influences from the media and such.So how bout the subject of rape? Dare we enter that into this forum of free and open discussion? Is it the fault of a girl, influenced by models to wear revealing clothes, if she is percieved as a sexual object? How bout that one?
I think you will find the parts about twin studies showing anorexia nervosa to be at least partially genetically determined. Ironically "taking control" is losing control.
Other parts bear quoting:"Treatment of anorexia nervosa is challenging and complicated....Denial of the seriousness of the illness is common in patients. Patients` family members often prefer physiological over psychological explanations for the disorder.... [the cause"> appears to be multidetermined. Consequently, treatment should be multimodal and include a combination of approaches.
*Flexibility and realistic goals are essential. *Long-term follow-up may be necessary. *Inpatient hospitalization may be neces
To be honest, the only faults i see here among us are our inabilities to take onboard eachother`s opinions.
Yes, the Internet was created to aid the transfer of knowledge and opinions.. but have humans really gotten any better at it?
I think we are all more than aware that xxxana has an ignorance of mental illness; you can console yourselves with the fact that the likely hood that he either a) suffers with a mental illness b) will suffer with a mental illness c) will have someone close to him develop a mental illness, is extremely high. Thankfully, most ppl manage to grow out of their ignorances through practical experience. Everyone, as long as they have the capacity to humble them selves in order to learn has the opportunity to develop humanity in themselves; it’s the rejection of those opportunities that turn you into an inhumane, stunted personality.
They cannot choose how they perceive the world. And hunger is very psychological anyways. If you have an improper balance in your brain, then your brain cannot properly monitor the levels of fats and amino acids in the blood and cannot trigger hunger. This balance is skewed by anorexia, which is a disorder of the brain.
It can further be aggravated by social pressures, just like schizophrenia can be aggravated by periods of high emotional discourse.
Anorexics have no more control over how they perceive the world than you have control over your compulsion to continually respond to this thread.
I have been sucked in once more! Confound this place! Okay, I`m quite through.
However, he seems incapable of grasping the notion that the core of anorexia is skewed perception. That altered perception is the basis for the altered actions (i.e. change in eating habits).
He seems to be saying to sufferers of anorexia (nervosa, just so were aren`t splitting hairs later) should be able to just start eating normally. I`m sure he would be an incredibly effective therapist. After all, what better advice is there for a sufferer of a mental illness than to "just stop it"?
Answer this one question please: Are schizophrenia or bipolar disorder diseases?
I`m looking forward to the conglomeration of poor logic and distraction that you will use to avoid a yes or no question with clearly only one correct answer.
All of those who profess their intelligence but keep up this `debate` truly show their level of intelligence.
Nonetheless, I would still like to see these geniuses continue to battle in a fight in which there can be no victor.
"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt."
Please continue...you`re all dip$hits anyhow. Dance, little monkeys, dance!
Furthermore by posting "poll" questions, you are judging a matter on public opinion. By asking an indirect question you are showing that even you don`t think the direct question would be answered the way you want.
So does public opinion matter or not? Apparently only when it agrees with you. Logic failure, again and again and again.
Why not just ask if they think Anorexia is a disease or a lifestyle choice? I think the answer to what the public thinks of that is overtly apparent.
Poor poor xxx. All alone.
*Poke poke*. :P Noticed it was the first thing you mentioned. ;)
As I said before, getting in the last word doesn`t make you right. Feel free to chat all you want but unless you actually answer anything I`ve put to you, your attempts at logic were still failures.
For someone claiming to cling so much to rationality your use of the main component of it is far below even the basic starting steps to adequacy, let alone a demonstration of the mastery you claim to have over it.
Pro-an is still the exception, and still gives no weight to your argument. Yet you`re still using it. Logic failure mr. rational.
I wouldn`t want to prosecute em until I`m done playing with them. ;)
Fun to prosecute?
I`m a big furry Arab.... and I`m making babies with a Blond-haired blue eyed white chick. Just throwing that out there cos I have a feeling that despite whatever denials or rationalizations you come up with, it`ll eat you up inside far more than anything you have to say could get to me. ;)
*Plays the porno music* *Bow-chika-chika, bow-chicka-bow*
Nazis are fun.
You are not rational, you are ignorant. Saying "I guess I`m too rational for some people" is a cop out. You might disagree. I guess I`m just too sexy for you to handle huh?
I`m sure a lot more than 90 percent feel the world would be a better place without mental and physical illness. What`s your point? About the physical attractiveness, that`s a matter of perspective; surely you don`t feel you can speak for the personal tastes of other people who assuredly have different preferences than your own?
I`m curious. I`ve read through all your comments in this thread thus far but have not once glimpsed your definition for a disease. You cannot hope to dismiss others` definitions without supplying and defending your own.
"If they can choose to starve themselves to look like walking skeletons, i can choose to call them whatever i want."
Yes but that doesn`t mean either is in good taste. For that matter, it`s not choice if indeed anorexia is a compulsion as you claim.
But in any case, www.dictionary.com provides an adequate definition of a disease:
"1. a disordered or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the body resulting from the effect of genetic or developmental errors, infection, poisons, nutritional deficiency or imbalance, toxicity, or unfavorable environmental factors; illness; sickness; ailment."
In the case that you do not agree with that one, perhaps we can go a step further and generalize a disease to `any prevalent dysfunctional system or defect to a system`.
This world is going to poo.
i`m there worst nightmare :D
Having considered your post.. Yeah.. i agree totally, a fair few of us, most in fact, probably just pitty xxxAna. When i`m through with this thread, ima go get on with my life not caring about the ignorant people. When xxxAna is through, he`s gonna have to look out his door at all the `undesirables` with whom he must share this Earth. In fact.. i bet that woman doesn`t look out at the world and think "gee i`d be happier if they weren`t alive". She`s content with her life, or content enough not to end it, and has goals. xxxAna may have goals, but.. well to live with nothing but unhappiness that other *different* people exist.. That`s just sad.
And you never know, he could just be one of those people that get off to making other people get upset. If so, that sounds like a mental illness as well. Let us all just choose to feel sorry for him, that he has to live in a world filled with his own hate and intolerance.
xxana rocks...hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!!!! *meniacal laughter*
I suddenly realised that it kind of reminds me of Hitler`s Übermensch.
I`ll leave you guys to waste your time with this mindless banality if you wish.
(I am of course refering to the human being here feigning opinions exhibiting sociopathic tendancies in order to glean a little attention for them selves - xxxana)
Feed the troll - get more of the same; the one and only universal truth.
I said they were BELOW amphibians.
Please read your own posts?
And MISSCUTIEROO - I used to think you were kinda pretty. Now you`ve given a glimpse inside your mind.I see ugly all over. *Hides*
Don`t you mean Anor-sex-ic???????
I hope that isn`t real. If it is, I feel sorry for the woman, whether it`s her fault or not.
That`s insulting. I`m a size 0 and I`m a healthy weight for my age and height. I also look nothing close to that thing in the picture.
Jesus. It`s annoying how everyone who thinks people who are size 0 have an eating disorder. I eat like a fat ass and just have a really fast metabolism.
1. Loss of appetite, especially as a result of disease. 2. Anorexia nervosa.I hope you don`t get a disease, but something like a mental illness. You`re prolly just a fat f*cker.
"Here, let`s just try these on..."*snap"Oh, God, I broke your leg in half. Sorry."
lmao. nah though in all seriousness poor lady she does needs help
She should be eating at McDonalds right now.
Anorexia is a serious mental condition. PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM ANOREXIA CANNOT HELP IT, as much as they would like to just be happy with themselves, they can`t be. It`s much more complex then just wanting to be thinner and it goes beyond just their perception of themselves. It`s about wanting control over their own lives, anxiety/fear of not being accepted or not being good enough and obsessive compulsive behavior. It`s about years and years of hunger and pain because they are trying to fill a void in themselves they can`t seem to fill. Anorexia is the psychiatric condition that claims the most lives. Do you have any sympathy for people with Depression? Or Anxiety disorders? What about those with Schizophrenia? People who suffer from all these conditions cannot help what they feel or what they see/hear and neither can a person with anorexia.
