Me thinks she`s faking it. I can easily imitate a British accent without it sounding cheesy.

Oh, and by the way-the American Southern accent is STUPID!
So stop pretending to be patriotic and be quiet about British accents. In fact, be quiet period!

My good friend in England thinks I have a cool accent. I am so used to the way I talk I would have never even guessed that I HAD one. I was surprised! Wow an American with an accent, well shiver me timbers.

"does it annoy anyone from the UK that in american sitcoms and stuff, the only english people they have, have really OTT posh english accents? it does me." It`s called `Stereotyping` We don`t all drink tea from teacups with our little finger pointing out, and we`re not butlers either.

Fascinating. Damage to the brain`s language centre alters the way somebody speaks, and the people around her thinks she`s using a foreign accent. Verrrry interesssssting.

^^ no, when they have a serious mental problem and/or serious head trauma from an accident that f*cks evrything up THEN they revert back to that SOUND u call english.

So when the stupid dies out of Americans, they revert back to English. Interesting.

I`ve heard of this... kinda weird.
I tend to pick up the accent of those I`m around... or if I`m watching a movie, I`ll start speaking in whatever accent is the most prominent without realizing it until after a few minutes.

It`s so funny when Americans don`t think that they have an accent. In Canada, we can spot the Americans right away just by the way they talk and the words that they use.

yeah, maybe lexmex is right...i know if someone would try and do an accent like my Ohio accent, it would sound funny even if they`re doing it right...(sigh)...we have to work a lot on removing our accents in choir...

"Technically we all have an accent Stentorian. But I don`t want a different one like you." AtomicMuffin

"Stentorian, we all have an "accent." An accent is just a certain inflection and manner of speaking. Americans tend to have a somewhat high-pitched accent that prefers short vowels to long ones. To some, our accent can actually sound fairly "whiny." I have an American accent, though my vowels tend to be a bit longer-sounding." superstevio

Yes, I`m aware everyone has accents, but I don`t like any other.

"based on this information all british people have brain damage." jebler

Haha, that`s what I thought...

Male 2,216
23scadu... you`re a fool. Americans have "queers" too.

And she doesnt sound at all British, but its odd of the BBC to say a "British" accent instead of "English". I think its garbage though, brain damage wouldnt make your accent sound like an existing different one, thats just stupid.

Bellatrix, you`re right that alot of people smush all the British accents into one category. I don`t know them all, but I do know there are alot of different accents and dialects over there.

It makes me feel the same way when people say "American Accent". We have more than one accent here, particular to many small areas (Boston, NYC, California, Buffalo, Southern US, Texas....the list goes on)

I studied Linguistics in college and the dept taught that EVERYONE has an accent and dialect, you may just not be able to hear your own becuase it may be subtle.

yeah this is kinda old news
this was on discovery healths channels medical incredible like last year i think?
anyways doctors and specialists think that the body speech is just changed to what we think SOUNDS like a different accent.. it doesnt have anything to do with the brain actually imitating an accent

so maybe thats why she doesnt sound really British to some of the England people here

Anyway, I heard about a woman from Birmingham who had a stroke and woke up with a Jamaican accent = /

Incidentally, I speak Arabic with a Geordie accent. This is not so impressive to women. :)

Her accent sounds really fake. Not that she`s faking the syndrome, I have heard of it before, but no British person would ever think that she`s British. It`s a shame, because her voice sounded really nice before. I heard a story like this where a girl hit her head and started talking with a French accent. She hit her head again a few months later and she went back to her natural Welsh one. Maybe this woman should try that.

does it annoy anyone from the UK that in american sitcoms and stuff, the only english people they have, have really OTT posh english accents? it does me.

Although, with a little patience and a speech coach any accent can be removed and a new one aquired.

There`s a story from the town where I live about a man who had a stroke as he was travelling into the town and obtained a German accent. Well, that would have been okay except this was during the war, everyone thought he was a spy and he was shot. Oh dear.
