Anti-Gravity Helicopter?

It appears that the blades aren"t moving due to the camera being in sync with the speed of blade rotation.

In reply to ZoKtorR, your ratio looked logic, but bomoman is right. here is why:
the blade must do 0.2n rotation per frame (for n=1,2,3,...). At 30 frame per second, that means 6n rotation per second, so 360n rotation per minute. ratio (rpm/fps) = 360n/30 = 12n. Therefore the ratio must be a multiple of 12. For a 24 fps it would be: 4.8n rotation per sec; 288n rotation per minute; 288n/24 = 12n.

So from that, we see that for `x` blades, the ration RPM/FPS must be a mulitple 60/x and not 1/x. There you go :)

This is my first visit here, this site is awesome.

prebanman - No one believes that this is from a video game. It would be a pretty lame vid to put in there, since there`s no action (shooting, bombing etc.) and a pretty "unrealistic" view.

pretty easy to explain, nothing magic happening. nothing photoshopped (besides. who would go edit every single frame in the entire videoclip?)
the rotors spin at a constant speed, and the camera`s framerate is synced so that each time it takes a picture the blades will be in the same position. and as far as flying up/down its just the pitch of the blades being changed, the rpm remains the same, for turning too, its just the tail rotor that changes speed, faster to turn one way slower to turn the other way

-You need to take the comment in the context of the post I was referencing to and correcting. Because someone said something to the effect of "coincidences occur naturally." So if you`re going to correct someone, read in context instead of being a dumb ass.

Also apparently you can`t read since you spelled my name "liquid glass" rather than "liquidglass" as is the standard spelling I use for my screen name.
Since you like to correct everyone else on their grammatical mistakes to detract from your lack of an intelligent comment I figured I would point that out.

So, to restate what I said earlier:

this video isnt of a real helocopter, its from a video game called Armed Assualt. maybe some of your explinations could work, but in this case, its just a video game so the rotors dont actually have to be turning for the thing to move, cuase its a video game.

^^nice wiki`ing.
According to this definition, yes, I must be a hypocrite. I`d rather stick with the first definition though.

2 remarks however:
- In my beliefs (hehe), not all cases of hypocrisy should be condemned. If you kill a thousand flies and I kill one, I should be allowed to point out the fact that you`re killing a lot of flies there. Same thing here: bigfatturd made 6 spelling errors WHILE COPYING FROM A DICTIONARY, and I made a small common error.

- YOU are also a hypocrite, because YOU are pointing out MY spelling errors, while, for instance, you don`t manage to spell the word "argument" out right. This is even worse considering the fact that English is your main language.

Moreover, YOU calling ME a hypocrite when you`re one yourself, makes you a DOUBLE hypocrite.
*points and laughs* :p

Just like you did with me. I hate that I`m getting dragged into this but I will allow myself one chance to defend myself.

ZoKtorR - Sorry if you misunderstood my comment but I never tried to explain anything that had already been said, I merely wanted to point out that I think, as you said "if you think about its really really hard, very very unrealistic." to achieve this. I find it hard to believe that the relationship between the rotors and the fps would just happen to be right for that length of time, so I tried to explain how I thought it would work. Notice I said "just my thoughts" and "I think" I wasn`t trying to tell you how it`s done, I was merely stating what I thought, preferably so I could get some feedback as I`m no expert in helicopters or cameras, and I will admit that.

So other that ZoKtorR, anyone else think my idea is boll*x???

By the way, if it was frame sync, the rotors would not be dead still. As the helicopter ascends and descends the rotor speed changes, therefore it would sometimes be faster and sometimes slower than the cameras frame rate. And who just films a helicopter like this anyway? It`s obviously either faked or some sort of test flight for an alternative means of proplosion.
0

Male 1
Has anyone noticed that the rotor seems to move clockwise and counterclockwise? If the rotors looked stationary because of frame captures, it wouldn`t look like they were spinning lazily in different directions. It looks to me like theres two rotors pointing downward giving the helicopter vertical thrust. That`s why it`s flying kind of erratically. If you look closely at the wing looking things sticking out of the body, you can tell theres something spinning very fast on them. I`m surpised I`m the first one to notice this.

Oh God, liquidglass, please just shut up, we have all seen a hundred unnecessary fight on forums that are fuels by egos inflated due to the fact that you are looking at a screen and not a person and you have time to plan what you say, so these petty arguments are highly boring and annoying and even worse when you drag it out like you have. So please, we get your message.

P.S. Just my thoughts but would the camera not need a live uplink to the helicopter to consistently match the fps to the rpm (rpm must change for the ups and downs, would change a bit for the turning) Granted it is not always perfectly in sync and the blades move a little, I still think this "uplink" would be necessary. That would be more interesting to me than the concept it`s based on.

The blades of the helicopter spin at the same RPM whether it is rising or falling... rate of climb of decent is controlled by the pitch of the rotors, not the RPM they spin at. So it`s easy enough to match the speed of the camera with the speed of the rotors.

Suicism again:

Yes I realized what the whole "syncing" ordeal was, and I read the original site the video came from so I knew what had occured after my first post. I still found it very uncommon and was commenting on such, because most of the time when you see a helicopter flying what happens? You see the blades spin. That means you would have to do the calculations and adjust accordingly, thus my comments on the difficulty of setting up the shot.

also, I posted that Mossoi had simply copy and pasted what was from the original video page and then was very condescending saying that he wouldn`t continue the math equations because people here were morons, rather than admitting he didn`t get it or that he was just copy/pasting.

-"They happened to sync-up, just get over it"
well if it `naturally` occured then it wouldn`t have "just happened" it would be the norm.

If you`re going to try to argue with someone at least make it seem sensible, dumb ass.

Suicism:

1) The definition of coincidence:
-A coincidence occurs when unexpected parallels can be drawn from two or more events. In the popular sense it is used to describe events (or, more accurately, combinations of two or more events) which are of low probability.
-an apparently chance or unlikely event which creates an unexpected and significant situation
-an event that might have been arranged although it was really accidental

*What you can derive from this is that natural things are expected to occur, so if it`s a coincidence, it`s not expected, it just happens. So keep quiet until you can say something intelligent.

i think this was a delebrate effect with the blades locked at a constant rpm. otherwiese when the helocopter rises it would increase rpm. but in this video the helocopter body spins in order to provied the extra rpm needed to lift

Quote Mossoi:
As long as the rpm of the rotors divided by the camera frame rate results in a number ending in .2 then the effect will occur (.2 as there are 5 blades).

You were right about everything, except it`s not a "number ending in .2" but "any multiple of 0.2", e.g. 0.4 or 3.8.

ummm, if our eyes had a fps rate to speak of, it is actually slower than video cameras, not faster suicism. if it were faster, then we would not see streaming video, we would see flashing frames...

so "the latter rate" is not "more rapid" as you seem to think is so "obvious"

Mossoi`s explanation makes sense.

Unlike the one with the "high speed camera" explanation. thats just well....moronic.

I think it looks cool.
It`s amazing how easy it can be to trick our brain, sometimes! ^_^
Allthough I understand completely how that works and could replicate it with the right camera and information, I`m still fasicnated by the video.
Coincidence or plan: it looks good!

If you could be able to set the frame rate on the carmera, and also know the rpm of the helicopter rotor blades, that is easily archieved.

you know
thats the exact same technique when you see a car drive in a movie.

You see it spinn, then it`s as if it stands still and than IT`S LIKE IT SPINNS BACWARDS!

that becaus the speed of the car chanches!

Never managed to get it in sync but all my videos make it look like the rotors go very slow

Hey Gh4z...did you just not take the time to read the explanation? That the fps of the camera is in sync with the rpm of the blades? Or did you just speak ignorantly for hopes of sounding smart. Though I`ll give you one point, because no actual good explanations came after your comment. But still, when an answer is given, it makes you look pretty stupid to say "Photoshopped!"

Anyways...yea, that`s a nice effect, but the back and forth up and down movements of the copter was a little creepy. I kept thinking it was gonna crash. Man that bugged me.

True Legion. And suicism is absolutely right, I made a video on this sort of thing once.

Liquidglass, you are an idiot... A coincidence can indeed be natural. Like a tree falling in front of you a day after someone said a tree would fall in front of you. That`s pretty natural.

Not nessesarily at the same speed just a multiple of it. Example, the rotor spins at 4000 rotations per minute exactaly, and the camratakes 40 frames per second. The result? Blades on a helicopter that apear motionless.

Frame-rate vs. rotation-speed; perhaps they sync-up, according to the framework which "Mossoi" laid-out; as you were too proud to accept. It makes perfect sense, I don`t understand why you`re having such a problem with this. If you took a picture every 1 second of something that rotated every 1 second, it would appear that the appendages of that rotating object were not moving at all. That`s exactly what`s happening with a camera, as well as our eyes (though the latter rate is obviously more rapid); the camera does not take continuous stimuli and record it as such, it must be broken-up into frames. Similarly, the helicopter-blade does not just rotate at an infinite speed, otherwise it`d be a solid object / physical blur, and has revolutions for this very reason which can be measured; so what`s your problem? They happened to sync-up, just get over it!

All coincidences are `natural,` you f*cking moron, unless you can prove otherwise. ALL things are coinciding at once; definition of a coincidence? "Event which involved the coinciding of two or more independent elements."

"a coincidence that occurs naturally"

I believe you just made the most ironic and conflicting statement on this one so far.

Awesome. Pretty funky to find the right frame speed to match the blades. Or yeah, luck might be it too.

It`s like how when you`re watching old movies and the wheels will sometimes look like they`re going backwards or not moving at all due the the framerate matching up with the rotation funny.

^^ Too much effort. You can do the same with your eyes. Look at a bicycle wheel or car rim - if it`s spinning fast enough, your eyes can only pick up the rim and wheel spokes at certain times during its spinning cycle - so sometimes it may look like the wheels aren`t spinning, or in fact spinning backwards very slowly.

The camera doesn`t need to be high speed and there`s no video editing. It was just a coincidence that occurs naturally.

It`s easy. Take a high speed camera and record the helicopter. Then only take these frames where the blades are on the same position. Cut all the others out.

too bad you just regurgitated exactly what the original site said there Mossoi, so don`t be too quick to speak on idiocy of other posts.

The originality in this event however of them being synced well enough to cause the illusion is what causes me to believe it is difficult to achieve and perhaps happened by accident.

They don`t have to be exactly in Sync. In fact, there`s quite a number of rotor rpm/camera fps ratios that will cause this effect.

As long as the rpm of the rotors divided by the camera frame rate results in a number ending in .2 then the effect will occur (.2 as there are 5 blades). I`ll not bother with the rest of the maths as comments on this site are pretty moronic most of the time and there`s not much point.

it would be really difficult to sync the fps with the rotation of the blades, and far too much trouble

Every time the camera records a frame, the blades have gone around, or maybe to the next position exactly ONCE. So it looks like they arent even moving.

It is in sync with the top rotor. The tail rotor always has to spin faster in order to keep the helicopter stable.......

In sync = High speed camera

Link: Anti-Gravity Helicopter? [Rate Link] - It appears that the blades aren`t moving due to the camera being in sync with the speed of blade rotation.
