The message is self-contradictory, in one sense, and very powerful in another.

We are nothing more than a speck of a dust, an atom in the ocean.

Therefore we should either seek as much happiness as is possible before our eventual oblivion.

Or

We should stick to what we believe is right and important, because it is the only thing worth living for, more important than anything else.

Yet we must

Very very good video, shows just how miniscule our civilisation and everything existing within it is so small compared to ..Everything.

"At any rate, I`ve never had a problem with feeling insignificant because I understand that my significance is relative to my perception. I am important within my own little sphere of influence, what exactly does anything outside of it matter?"
thats exactly how i feel about it... well, now it is, at least!
"I think this video tought us more than we can learn in 1 years"
that depends on what youre willing to learn, and how much of it, really.

Our minds are probably just as big as the universe itself cos its proven that it doesn`t have any limitations.
And phoenixphata, your own little sphere wouldn`t have any influences in the first place if it hadn`t been influenced itself by the outside world.

Meh. Moving, powerful, blah. I`ve heard it all before. It doesn`t make me want to go outside and plant a tree or anything. Nicely put together, though.

That was really good. It`s nice that something still reminds us that the universe doesn`t revolve around us.

"This video doesn`t make me feel insignificant, it makes me feel like I belong to something.
We may be insignificant but we are all insignificant together."

seconded.

I have great respect for Carl Sagan, but the irony is that the very technology that allowed us to take the famous "Blue dot" photo was derived from war. The saturn V rocket is the direct descendant of the V2 rocket from WWII. The encoding machines from WWII such as the enigma machine started the path to computers. Its sad but true.

This particular video is too loud and noisy, and as such it doesn`t give justice to the power and emotion of Carl`s message. For a better video, see:

Your level of insignificance depends on if you believe in the "ripple effect" that if I sneeze I`ve caused the storm on Jupiter to get worse.

And to who ever asked, no it`s not contradictory to believe in a higher power AND in other life on other planets/places. Just because the higher power created you doesn`t mean he didn`t create anything/anyone else.

The message doesn’t make sense: The world is small and insignificant so lets all get along? Might as well be: The world is small and insignificant so we might as well just kill each other.

Why are these things so anti-human all the time? I like being a person! I believe we are a force for good.

+10 for the Braniac reference (if that`s what it was)

At any rate, I`ve never had a problem with feeling insignificant because I understand that my significance is relative to my perception. I am important within my own little sphere of influence, what exactly does anything outside of it matter?

of course this doesn`t prove that humans our insignificant, just shows we probably are. Arguabley we are very vital to the universe if only to appreciate our lack of input towards the greater scheme of things. i personally believe the whole universe will simpley dissappear upon my death as i will no longer be able to percieve it, so you all wanna hope you die before me :P

This is beautiful. I know the video is going to get slagged by people for whatever dumbass reasons, in various dumbass ways, but before the haters start venting I suggest this: READ one or two of Carl Sagan`s books, or maybe even track down his TV show (`COSMOS,` it`s on DVD) and watch a few episodes. If you still feel the need to spew, there`s no hope for you; you`re permanently part of the problem.

it never ceases to amaze me how people believe so whole heartedly in stuff and not realize there is more to it then their narrow view on life.I mean, if the universe was the size of Earth is now, we wouldn`t be the size of an atom, (we as in our planet) yet people believe without even trying to find the truth that we are the most important being alive and people can`t accept we are just a cosmic anamoly like all other lifeforms in the universe. (Not saying we are visited by alien spaceships, but you have to be PRETTY gullible to believe we are the only life forms in the universe)
