I knew a homeless guy who lived in a nice sized city and everyday he would go to a deli near his "house" and instead of them throwing away all their food they would just hand him bags of it, not trash, just bread in one bag and meat in another. Lol worked out much better than him diving in a dumpster, and while I`m sure he got tired of eating subs he probably got thinner than from the subway diet.

most places have locks on their dumpsters. Also some of that stuff could make you sick. I do agree we waste too much food, but sometimes the stuff is really expired, I mean c`mon you own a car but you dumpster dive, go donate it to a shelter..

i think this is a great idea, well, to do in the US maybe, but in the UK, all the rubbish is mostly rubbish, not nice.
Looks like i would have more food than I could ever eat in the US

1967, In Phoenix, AZ John Van Hinkel realized that this was going on. He talked to the store managers and they agreed to give him food that was out-of-date or within a few days of being so. In his own pickup he brought it to a building and gave it out to the homeless and hungry. 40 years later, St. Mary`s Food Bank is the second largest (NY is first) in the nation, distributing over 5 million pounds of food in 2006. Store managers need to do their part and help the hungry and homeless in the community. DONATE.

I think that it is wrong that they eat that food, since they have good paying jobs, they should buy the food that they eat, and all of the food that they collect from the dumpsters should go to homeless shelters and other folks that can not afford to buy food.
Also, too just cause it LOOKS good does not mean it IS good. I had a few cases where I had to throw away food before the expiraton date-meat that I left in the sink to thaw for too long, it looked good when I tossed it, but it probaly was not, and I would much rather my family be safe and throw food away, then get badly sick from eating it.
here is a link to what some of that food looks like that they get
And it is not just food that they try to get for free, it is also housing, clothing everything else that you can think of. I just can not help but think they are just bad freeloaders, its cool to help people who are unfortunate, but those

Here in the EU supermarkets, restaurants, food producers have to destroy the unwanted food. Just for this reason.

How retarted can you get...have they ever heard of food poisoning?

missaquafina, its great that you are so high on your pedestal and all, but the point is this food ISNT going to homeless shelters and IS being wasted and these kids are saving it from waste. If you were paying attention to the video instead of judging them, you would have heard that the money they save from groceries is spent on other charitable causes. Obviously some of the stuff they salvage cant be eaten, so that is the stuff they compost or throw away again.

i feel bad when i have to throw anything away. seeing perfectly good food go to waste saddens me.

America can a very wasteful society. And it seems like trying to counteract that waste is often viewed as unAmerican somehow. It`s "unmanly" not to drive a giant tank-of-a-car. Everything should be new, new, new. What you have isn`t good enough. Throw it out and get the newest, latest version of what you already have.

food poisoning is easily avoidable with a little common sense, experience and good food hygeine.

having said all of this, it`s not feasible to do this in NYC. There really aren`t many dumpsters. Companies that do have dumpsters keep them indoors in enclosed loading dock areas. Oh, and NYC garbage tends to be downright putrid.

anyway, i have a good cream of broccoli soup recipe if they need it.

The college students irked me, acting as if they are saviors of the earth from eating food from a dumpster.

Would I do it? No, but I have respect for the people that do and don`t pat themselves on the back for it. I`ve lived one year in my apartment and the only food I`ve thrown out has been some bad eggs and cheese that turned black.

It is a shame though that good food is wasted.

missaquafina - I agree with you! Around here, there are people who go to the welfare office claiming they are poor, helpless, etc.., and *bam* they get welfare on the spot. One girl I know (who by the way, I am NOT friends with) has 2 children & she gets $400 in food stamps a month. She told them she was divored. She was seperated at the time, but is back with her husband now. She has a good job, and she always dresses her childen in nice clothes. These kind of people make me SICK.

    "liberal communist tree-hugging satanist homosexuals"

Who said anything about them being any of those things? They have a good idea, and they take all of the precautions necessary to make sure its healthy and clean. It`s society`s idea that trash of all kind is disgusting and rotted and filled with bacteria but you know what? Even your own bodily wastes are sterile for a time. Stop being a right-wing asshat and get off of George Bush`s dick.

v_wilkes85>> You`re an idiot. "next time you spit on our white ancestor`s efforts..." who said that I was white? You assume too much. I can`t believe you said that they come in, invade and disrespect. 1st, it seems that even though you`re Canadian, you don`t know how to value multiculturalism. Secondly, before you talk about muslims destroying your culture and mooching your gov`t, how about you check out the stats and tell me what races are mooching off you the most? Different races/cultures have done so much for Canada. There are tons of examples there.. (almost equal to Mexicans & the US) They are willing to do the jobs that no one else wants to do and work hard at it. Who built the railroads in Canada? I recall it was the white people who were cracking the whips on those guys they imported from china. Review your history. Canada wasn`t built only by whites.

mclara, thanks! was wondering if there was a sensible reason, not just fear of silly litigation in case someone did eat that food and get sick. and yes, stuff is generally good for a while after the sell by date. i suppose the dates are overcautious, and that is for fear of litigation. i know a family who would happily eat it right up til the evening before the sell by date, but never even consider it the next morning. such a waste.

I really wish I could be like these guys. It`d be hard for me to get past the "it was in the dumpster" thing, but really, it`s no different.

And to everyone pointing out food poisoning, they know what to look for and how to prepare food to make it safe. In the video, the guy said he`d never had food poisoning.

And they do use excess money and food to help the needy. They say they used the money for charity, and they bring the food to work, so everyone can enjoy it.
