They are laying off everyone who they determine is making more than minimum market wage. Nice.

Circuit City isn`t in business to provide people jobs, or a certain income. They`re in business to make money. If they don`t make money then they go out of business and every employee of the company is out of work. If you don`t like how you`re treated or compensated where you work leave. Most American employees have no loyalty to their employer, so why should a company have to pay its employees more than the market demands? If you can get a higher paying job at a different company, go...and don`t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.

It`s a little more than creepy that some of you are attacking the "little people", you know the one`s that actually need those few dollars increase to survive inflation in our capitalistic society. Everyone knocks communism, and rightfully so, but capitalism is not a dream, it`s the extreme opposite to communism. We have never successfully reached a middle(socialism) because of the greedy corporate bastards who refuse to live with a little less.
FYI, Circut city, best buy, walmart any big box superstore who can afford to sell their products so cheap because they buy materials from sweat shop owners- are all the same. Different name but the same. I witnessed a 61 year old 23 year employee fired because she had cancer, even though she was still coming to work everyday. And that is glorious, wonderful capatalism. How is this the best way again?

I can`t honestly believe that this handful of people making a bit more than the average could be that detrimental to the company unless they are really hurting in which case the layoffs aren`t going to help much. This is just money grubbing and/or someone flexing their corporate equivalent to an e-peen.

Oh, as for the increase in minimum wage, y`all seem to have the causality mixed up a tad. The reason they need more money is because things are more expensive and they kinda, sorta enjoy being alive.

Pure exploitation of the workers. Remember if you oppose their movements you`re a communist! :-P

It`s hard to read this kind of thing, especially after having taken a Business Ethics class only a few months ago.
I prefer Best Buy anyway.

Plus, to add to that, when Best Buy last did it, they eliminated nearly 40% of employees. Circuit City eliminated only 3,400 employees. That`s less than 10% of the employees nationwide.

I have a friend who is a manager at a Circuit City. It`s not just Circuit City. Best Buy and Comp USA recently did the same thing. A lot of compnaies are experiencing the problem. These people aren`t just paid a few cents more than what they should be making, they`re being paid several full dollars more than what they`re doing. As my friend put it, "This one guy was being paid $2 more than anyone else in his department, and he worked the least out of any of them." It`s not just CC like I said. Best Buy and CompUSA did the same thing. It happens every six years or so.

Hey Bram you`ve got it easier than me, K mart deducts an hour for every five we work (lunch), even if we work it, & when minimum went up this year I had the $2 raise I had been working up (at like 25 cents a year) taken away.

Damn Circuit City! I am thinking about writing Corporate about this and demand an explanation. What this guy needs to do is contact the BBB and talk to them about it. He should also contact a lawyer for wrongful termination.

As for going there again, I don`t think I will. I know that 1 person won`t make that a difference, but I like Best Buy better anyway

Circuit City will become bankrupt soon, they are already showing the signs. I think it is horrible for companies like this to do what they do. The people I work for love to poo on their good employees while they pamper the bad ones.

Stay in school. I`ll be damned if I have to work in retail for much longer.

I heard about this on the new as well.

What circuit city is doing is stupid.

The workers should go on strike or
boycott or something, they shouldnt
let themselves get stepped on like
thiss.

ok so walmart has been doing worse i mean they hire illegal immigrants for 2 dollars an hour have their employees clock out and work and if your a women or minority don`t expect a higher position

yet it doesn`t matter as long as you can get 23 rolls of toilet paper for 4 dollars

cause thats the our way screw others and worry about only yourself

Happens all the time, I`ve seen it more than once in my retail "career".

Bram - I know how you feel, went through the same thing at Kroger.

I don`t even think I know anyone who shops at Circuit City. Their selection of pretty much anything is really pooty, and Best Buy generally has lower prices anyway.

They`re like the K Mart of electronics stores.

elroy72, you are not a very careful reader. She had been working at circuit city for 10 years when they stopped offering a pension plan but had worked for the company another 12-odd years after that for a total of 22 years.

ok any1 else see this:

"My mother who worked for this company for over 22 years was one of these associates."

but

"At this point she had been working for Circuit City of over 10 years,"

gives me an urge to yell FAKE...

DrewK- This is what happens when you jack minimum wage up $2/hr. It`s called capitalism.

Amen. If they want the extra $2/hr then it eventually catches up to them or to someone else.

Unfortunately the bottom line is more important than hard-working people these days. Circuit City has jacked up prices as it is, I bet that they will not come down after this shady move.

This is what happens when you jack minimum wage up $2/hr. It`s called capitalism. Companies are designed to make profit, and as much as they can. Sucks, and I`d hate it if it happened to me, but capitalism is BY FAR the best system. A lot of people were called evil because they opposed the minim,um wage increase and said this very thing would happen. Now I know who was right.

SAD. Whenever a company experiences a layoff, it`s due to one simple law of business: Senior Management was incapable of adequately managing the business. If they were capable, they would NEVER get into a position where they have to result to laying off their employees.

Successful businesses are those with Sr. Managers that have the vision to plan for the future, recognizing their one (and only) consistent, dependable resource; their employees. Any company that doesn`t realize this is going to struggle.

A successful business realizes that their first and foremost customers are their employees on the front line (the salesperson on the floor, the cashier at the checkout, the delivery man, the waiter/waitress, etc.). These levels of employment are NOT where the problem is.

A layoff is simply a self-admission by Sr. Management that they have failed to manage their business. That`s about as simple as it can get.

What they`re doing is no worse than what they`re doing at the store I`m working at. Bastards just fired the lady who has been working for the store for 15 years, because her position is no longer needed, and they dropped these two women who had been there for 20 years down to like 15 hours, with a pay cut.

They stopped giving raises, period. For working a seven hour shift we get one fifteen minute break, and they never go over seven hours, so that they don`t have to give us a lunch break. We never have a store manager, because everytime that corporate comes by, they fire our manager for some bullpoo reason, like not having the storetidy enough, which is impossible to do, because they won`t give us enough hours to do anything.

Sorry, can you tell I`m bitter about my job? (I get angry because they fired the customer service lead and gave me the job, with no pay raise or training, and I have no idea what I`m doing. I`ve only been working for the company for eight months.)

Wal-Mart is pretty much the same way, they just haven`t been stupid enough to actually announce it.

damn... that`s low. but i already boycott circuit city because their prices suck and the one by me has a nearly nonexistent checkout system. there are all of these floating checkout islands around the store, but for different things. and they`re usually unmanned.

still - who the drat shops at circuit city?
