I got another way to do it. Take ammonium nitrate and nitromethane and mix them together, then put about 3 fluid ounces of it into a pan, and put the pan into a bunsen burner.

better to use red devil lye for the sodium hydroxide... less other crap in it and still available at most supermarkets

drano, sodium hydroxide, fire...
we making meth here?
lol..
so does that mean that everyday silver can be turned into gold by heat...?
obviously not.

also, iJasc is right. drano is very dangerous when you try to mess with it. It doesn`t just have sodium hydroxide in it. I think there is Chlorine in solution too, along with other nasty stuff. I`ve seen what happens when you try to titrate Drano--bad idea.

I`ve done this before. The silver pennies are just pennies with a super-thin layer of zinc deposited on them from the zinc-sodium hydroxide solution. The gold happens when you heat the penny and the copper creates an alloy with the zinc(brass) and looks golden. Remember that the layer of brass is very thin and relatively delicate. If you leave them with a layer of zinc it is even more so. Try using a clear nail polish or something to coat the outside when you`re done to preserve the finish.

Cute, I suppose you can use them as props or something.

uh. boiling drano and inhaling it might kill you. do it outside.

I`d like to try that actually - but i`m not going to run out to get those chemicals just to turn a penny gold. Plus they`re pretty useless once you`ve done that.

Man, why is everyonje being so skeptica? Weather or not it is usefull or real is irrelevent, because it is still cool. This site is for when you are bored, not when you are tryin to get rich. Just enjoy it.

Could the silver penny be mistaken for a dime if no one pays attention?

Omg.....you guys are doosches!!!!! We know Zinc + Copper = Brass! Were not stupid. They look gold. My friend sold one to a buddy from high school for like 20$$!!!!!! you can make oney of these! what a dumbass

i remember doing this in my chemisty class in high school. just too bad it not real gold or i be rich!

I did something like that in school last year but it was a single/double replacement lab.

i should ask my science teacher if we can do this.

That in no way looks like gold.

"First off I doubt anybody has those chemicals laying around there house. Also I doubt anybody has a bunsen burner, ring stand, wire gauze, tongs or beakers laying around... Long story short, Don`t try this at home"

i have all of these things.... and who needs bunsen burner? fire is fire. and doesn`t everyone have drano?

colour the penny gold

It is illegal to deface any mint in the United States. High school lessons are exceptions, but you`d be stupid to start mass producing gold pennies in your home. End of story.

i just did this a couple of weeks ago in my chem class and still have the penny. :) Make sure to have either a new penny or clean it with steel wool or else it will be sorta gunky looking rather than clean gold

ooo wow that`s just so awesome. psht whatever. Yeah this is real stuff, I did this earlier this year in Chemistry. If y`all try that though, don`t rub the silver (zinc) ones too much, cause that takes the zinc off. But yeah. Cool that someone posted this. AND it`s not illegal to do this, my teacher even said, it`s just illegal to use them as anything more than a penny.

booooooo, i did this before. I knew a kid that was able to sell a ton of these for a quarter each <.<

Yeah, my teacher did that last year, I think. Still cool. We also did that thing where you add some chemical to make the penny hollow (just the copper shell left).

"It`s real, I did this in school, but if you try to use the penny, it`s illegal."
technically, its illegal to TURN the penny the dfferent color, not just use it, youre defacing government property

Male 308
That`s cool. But seriously, it`s illegal to damage coins...not that anyone cares about that law anyways. So basically, when you use one of those penny press machines at tourist attractions, you`re breaking the law. But as I said, no one cares, although you can`t use them.

Female 266
I`d like to use the silver ones and completely confuse people, cause it would loook so much like a dime.

But I don`t think i`d ever get the energy to do it.

Did anyone else immediately think "Yay! Now I too can do alchemy!" then clap their hands at penny?

If not the line is behind me. I am just curious if someone did.

Zinc = galvanized nails. Sodium Hydroxide = drano. The bunson burner you dont need. You just need a pot of some sort and an electric stovetop although a normal flame one should work. Then just follow the steps in the video.

SO unless you dont have any nails and/or drano then you have everything you need.

You have obviously never made napalm from styrofoam, gasoline and powder laundry soap. Hell you probably never have touched the anarchist cook book

galvinized nails and Drano, tons of people have that laying around.

So does it gold plate it or merely change it to that color? that is the real question. :)

Although its not real gold, you would still make some real cash selling it for `fools gold`.
