That is not a fake nor photoshopped. That is real.

However, the gold and the silver and not pure; meaning the gold penny is equivalent to fool`s gold.

-sigh- Too bad it doesn`t make REAL gold or silver. It just turns the penny that color. It`s just regular science, can`t become a millionaire off of it. The pennies, I mean.

Kinda funny if you were to give that to someone and see their reaction.
Maybe they`d give you more money thinking it was a nickel or something (even though they`re different sizes)

So does it gold plate it or merely change it to that color? that is the real question. :)

Did anyone else immediately think "Yay! Now I too can do alchemy!" then clap their hands at penny?

If not the line is behind me. I am just curious if someone did.

Zinc = galvanized nails. Sodium Hydroxide = drano. The bunson burner you dont need. You just need a pot of some sort and an electric stovetop although a normal flame one should work. Then just follow the steps in the video.

SO unless you dont have any nails and/or drano then you have everything you need.

You have obviously never made napalm from styrofoam, gasoline and powder laundry soap. Hell you probably never have touched the anarchist cook book

That`s cool. But seriously, it`s illegal to damage coins...not that anyone cares about that law anyways. So basically, when you use one of those penny press machines at tourist attractions, you`re breaking the law. But as I said, no one cares, although you can`t use them.

If y`all try that though, don`t rub the silver (zinc) ones too much, cause that takes the zinc off. But yeah. Cool that someone posted this. AND it`s not illegal to do this, my teacher even said, it`s just illegal to use them as anything more than a penny.

I`ve done this before. The silver pennies are just pennies with a super-thin layer of zinc deposited on them from the zinc-sodium hydroxide solution. The gold happens when you heat the penny and the copper creates an alloy with the zinc(brass) and looks golden. Remember that the layer of brass is very thin and relatively delicate. If you leave them with a layer of zinc it is even more so. Try using a clear nail polish or something to coat the outside when you`re done to preserve the finish.

also, iJasc is right. drano is very dangerous when you try to mess with it. It doesn`t just have sodium hydroxide in it. I think there is Chlorine in solution too, along with other nasty stuff. I`ve seen what happens when you try to titrate Drano--bad idea.

I got another way to do it. Take ammonium nitrate and nitromethane and mix them together, then put about 3 fluid ounces of it into a pan, and put the pan into a bunsen burner.
