Hmmm...Usually people who do these sorts of stunts bring boats around them to make sure this kind of thing doesn`t happen don`t they?...Just like that one guy that swam some gulf.
-----------------------------

The smart ones do... you don`t attempt to break a world record as dangerous as crossing the ocean alone, you bring some one along with instructions not to help you unless its really critical, like your boat capsizing while your sleeping.

I agree with Maddog.
If nobody pursued their dreams after they had kids, then where would we be as a race? People don`t all achieve great things when they`re 18 and younger, you know..

Ok guys..I`m going to explain this one more time for the small minded one`s calling this guy selfish!
You do not I REPEAT do not stop living your life because you have children. Love and support them, yes! Be there when they need you yes..but stop following your dreams and desires?

Freddyferret. This guy wanted to set a record. Wanted to prove that something could be done. now look at a fireman. He puts his life on the line everyday. Would you want him to stop because he has kids? What about a truck driver? he could crash and leave his kids behind?
It can be applied to ANY senario. He took a calculated risked. He planned this for 10 years!

He was NOT selfish. It`s very sad but stop using the argument that because your a parent you shouldnt do things. Everything has a risk.

Probably the most badass thing I`ve ever read on iab. It actually is rather heart breaking to know he came so close to doing something that really is rather impressive and incredibally dangerous.

I think it`s sad and selfish. I have no problem with people who want to take risks like that, but don`t have kids if you do. The kid will grow up without a father now and that`s not right. If you`re going to put yourself in dangerous situations don`t have kids until you`re done with it.

Who ever here is calling this man selfish is just stupid. Just because you have children (and I speak as a loving father) you do not stop following your dreams! It`s a tragedy that this man has died. But dont call him selfish or stupid, just because he took a risk. You could be knocked over walking to work tomorrow. Live life..dont hide from it!

Legion5 you`re an idiot... the reason you have two parents is so that you have a backup when one dies? Growing up is pretty difficult without both a mother and father... they`re each so important in a kid`s development.

I don`t think it`s selfish at all. Just very sad. And I think his son will probably grow up to be proud of hi father.

I don`t think he`s selfish. I wouldn`t have taken a risk like that if I had a kid, but I wouldn`t take a risk like that if I didn`t have a kid, so who knows?

The guy was an idiot. If you want to do this pointless hero rubbish, do it when you`re single. Now his three year old is going to grow up without a dad. Does the achievment of paddling about for a bit out weigh the loss that his wife and son are going through? Dont think so. Sorry, no sympathy here.

What a sad story. Andrew McAuley`s death was a terrible thing, especially for the wife and child he left behind. However, he died doing something positive that he always wished to do. It was a "lifelong ambition," not a passing fancy. So many people give up on their dreams too soon, becoming bitter and regretful as they get older.

There are many comments already about how selfish he was to do this to his son. I don`t think it`s selfish. I think it`s TRAGIC.

Selfishness lies in parents who are abusive to their children. The children you hear about on the news that have been starved, burned, molested, raped, beaten, murdered, etc. It lies in parents who choose drugs and drinking over taking care of their children. THAT is the problem with the world today, Devi. And if you`ve ever met any of those kids first hand like I have, you`d agree.

Also there is a reason why there are two parents and not one, in Modern countries it`s about as likley than not that he would have left his kid due to Divorce rathern than trying to break a record and do something he loved.

This guy is an non-nice individual. He has a three year old kid and he pulls something like this for what? I hope the stupid drater rots in hell. Now his kid is without a dad. The second you have kids, and I mean the drating second, YOUR life is over until that kid is 18 years old. If you don`t like it, DON`T HAVE KIDS. That is the problem with this world today.

When you make the decision in your life to have a family, your solo life ends as others now depend on you.

This tragedy was pointless, senseless, selfish, and most of all: avoidable...now his children will grow up not knowing their father.

There are real good reasons why you don`t go diving or rock climbing or hiking alone -- especially when other living beings now directly depend on you for their well being and safety.

Sad. All the way around.

Most unfortunate. Still, he knew the risks and did it anyway. More than can be said for some people.
