When I lived in oregon there was always ice storms every year. They were way cool looking and school would get cancled-we would slide around like we were iceskating in the rink. But they were really dangerous. And trees would snap in half like they were toothpicks.

Thats nothing once it snowed here and then the next day there was an ice storm. There was a solid layer of ice over the now so you walked on the ice and it was like walking on fog. I actualy took a picture and it looked like there was a thick layer of fog on the ground. basicly where it snowed it looked like it was foggy.... hard to explain but it looked very very cool. Its more of a you have to see it thing.

I was in Rochester for the Ice Storm of `91. These pictures are amazing, and bring back a lot of memories. I really love the way the grass reacts to it. . . we had a lot of crab-grass in my backyard, and it ended up looking like lots of little heads with dreadlocks. Amazing job with the pics, you were very adept at capturing the thickness of the ice, something that someone who has never seen an ice storm would have a hard time believing. Anyone who thinks this is photoshopped is incorrect. These are the real deal. And you should count yourself lucky to have never had to deal with it!

Wow...I know this can`t be a good thing, but still, can`t help thinking it`s beautiful.

There was a bad ice storm in Washington, sometime in the 90`s...I was too young to really remember it, though.

Yup, if you get caught in a freezing rain storm while driving the only thing you can do is stop immediatly and wait for it to pass over

Yep, Eastern Ontario-Quebec January 98` looked almost exactly the same, but hit a densely populated area here in Canada. Personally I didn`t mind, I got to go sledding with no sled (something i think anyone who has the extreme luck to be caught in an ice storm of this magnitude should try at least once). It was pretty wicked, but not fun getting out of my appartment building with no power to the elevator or to the stairway lights.

LaurensK90: It`s caused by super-cooled rain, rain that`s actually below the freezing point but still in a liquid state, until it hits something and instantly freezes. Don`t know the exact physics of it, but the water needs to be very clean for this to happen.

Happened here too about ten years ago, I had to use a blowtorch to be able to get into the car.

I agree its bad, but KoalaMeatPie was right....it has nothing on the storm up here in the eastern provinces a few years ago. We get crap like that all the time here...nothing new. yawn.

Holy cow! I thought Illinois got bad weather. I hope that people whose house caught on fire
("I have no idea what the hell was burning down there. This was near Minden looking sw.
EDIT: I guess this was a house fire about 6 miles southwest of Minden.")
are okay!!

I`m glad the cattle are okay, too. As most other little girls do, I read the Little House on the Prairie books when I was little and Laura Ingles Wilder talked about how the cattle got their mouths frozen to the ground in an ice storm during her time.

Shouts to Devi!

I lived out in the valley for the `96 ice storm. I look back on the cooking of family meals with the barbecue on the back deck, and think, "did that really happen?"

It looks pretty and everything, but it SUCKS when you live through it. I lived in KCMO in 2002 and we had a really bad ice storm and were out of power for over a week, with a newborn baby in the house. Stuck in the house with everyone for that long with absolutely no power...well, really makes you appreciate things that you normally take for granted lol.

Damn. I live in Minnesnowta and though we get ice cold freezing temps, and snowstorms, I never witnessed something to that extreme! Looks cool, especially each individual blade of grass covered with ice like that, but I`m glad it didn`t happen here!

I got all excited thinking this would be the ice storm from 1996 in Spokane WA. The whole city was covered in thick ice beyond anything this guy shows. People were out of power for weeks, and the city came to a stand still. The city was declared in a state of emergency. Imagine three feet of ice caving in roofs, killing people right where they stand, and no heat for weeks! Ice storm was just the half of it. Tons of trees died unable to recover from the damage. We have a huge population of ducks and geese that do not fly south for the winter that became frozen in place, or that could not find food, and died. People were hauling their bodies out for weeks. If you get a chance google it.

Lol it was so awesome. We didn`t get hit as hard as other places did. We lost power for about 14 hours at the most, but we lost it frequently over several days.

It was the coolest thing when I went outside. There was a good inch of ice right ony my house. It was crazy. We were literally FROZEN >>into<< our house without power lol. =0
The snow...well it kinda got rained over by freezing rain. So it turned kinda like a ice rink hard as hell snow =0

This isn`t a normal ice storm. Bush just declared western nebraska a federal disaster area. There`s at least an inch of ice on everything, and 28,000 people were without power for several weeks. The number of deaths on the highway was terrible just in its own right.
