"All disorders can be eventually over come but to just simply give in and hack off ones own legs is selfish and moronic."

Is an obsessive-compulsive who must repeatedly ascend and descend stairs moronic or selfish for indulging his disorder? The same can`t be said for them, why can it be said for these people?

"It may be their bodies to change or mutalate as they see fit but once it hinders others around them its no longer just their problem."

And this somehow justifies berating them for doing only what they feel\felt is\was natural? In my opinion I think they suffer from a form of body dysmorphic disorder, and if so, we should treat them accordingly, regardless what kind, if any, hindrance they pose.

One of these days, society is just going to have to acknowledge the fact that not everyone is well-adjusted or chemically-balanced and functions on the same level we do, and that despite this, we`re all still human beings.

True mental disoders may appears to be illogical but there is a method to the madness. All disorders can be eventually over come but to just simply give in and hack off ones own legs is selfish and moronic. "karl" even nrealized at the end that his actions were great ones dispite his "disorder" ("what the hell was I thinking"-karl) It may be their bodies to change or mutalate as they see fit but once it hinders others around them its no longer just their problem. I agree with the majority they were just plain stupid...

splurbyburbl, I said their reactions are borne of ignorance because... their reactions are borne of ignorance. Instead of making any effort to understand these people, they instead call them morons and stupid. Impractical, sure (hell, I`m impractical, care to call me stupid?), but they`re not stupid.

"To willingly destroy those tools just because you want to..."

I doubt very much that they want to as opposed to them feeling *compelled* to.

"...is illogical at best."

No one ever said mental disorders were "logical" in our terms.

"Now tell me Overmann, why should I build said Moron an elevator?"

Umm... where the f*ck did this question come from?

Thanks for reiterating my point for me, splurbyburbl, even though you didn`t understand it in the first place.

OK Overmann, here is a taste of your own medicine. A true objectivist as you subtly claim to represent, uses logic in the stead of emmotion. Your last comment was emmotional, not logical and more reactive, not proactive. But aside from symantics, healthy body parts are tools. Given that fact, the majority of society is based around those tools. From the everyday set of stairs to the height of the doorknobs on most doors. To willingly destroy those tools just because you want to is illogical at best. At worst, it calls for the healthy to compromise simple things like stairs just because some moron decided one day that legs are not his style. Now tell me Overmann, why should I build said Moron an elevator?

These people aren`t freaks, and they`re not stupid. They`re not being idiots, nothing like that. They honestly can`t help how they feel. I am a disabled person, and if someone had a mental condition that caused them to want to modify their body to be like mine, I wouldn`t call them stupid. Some things, as odd as they sound to everyone, just can`t be helped. I sincerely doubt any of these people consciously chose to have these thoughts and feelings. It`s a disorder.

No, R_U_Kidding, they exhibit reactions borne fundamentally of ignorance, nothing else.

Overmann, the idea that somebody deliberately wants to have their limbs removed (with no better reason than they just don`t want those limbs anymore)...that idea is simply too bizarre for the average person to process. To feel as though one`s legs (or whatever) are so offensive, one must remove them - that is simply so strange, the only way people can react is with shock and/or horror. The reactions on here don`t surprise me for a second; in fact, I`m only surprised there aren`t more comments along the same line.

Ugh, I give up. Sadly, a little understanding and objective reasoning seems to be a bit too much to ask for.

-sighs- They`re idiots. Being an amputee isn`t fun. I should know. I lost two of my fingers in a car accident. My left hand will never be the same. There`s some things I can`t do anymore that I wish I could.

"What gets me is there are people who lost their legs in serious accidents who would give anything to get them back...
could these people donate them or something.. lol ?"

EXACTLY what I was thinking. It is selfish whether any of you morons who think they are just "diseased" they just can`t see how well they have it. Which is pathetic considering come people would rather have it the way they do. It`s quite pathetic.

Not to be mean, but people like that doesn`t deserve to be alive if they just going to cut off their limbs. They are ungrateful to have good bodies.

What a waste of flesh.

You could sustain a starving family for days with a single choice cut of man-thigh, yet they just bin it.

When `Karl` and `Dan` finally pass on, I`m having the ribs.

Why is it that all the kids want to comment on the more adult discussions?

Like musicgod92...don`t say you`re comment is going to be 1 word but then decide to ramble on about how it makes you feel. Nobody cares if it makes you angry...since when was the article about you?
This is an important topic about people with problems who need help. The only thing `selfish` here is you saying that it makes you angry...you complete and utter spoon.

Thank you, that is all.

That was slightly disturbing... Also, you`d think that the pain of taking their own legs off or the fact that they will never walk again would make them not want to do it...

iansquall, there`s nothing selfish at all about wanting to do with one`s body as one sees fit, aside from the fact that it deals with the self. Personally I think the motivation for wanting to amputate one`s own limbs is far more psychologically complex than wanting to be different or special.

At least it`s not an obsession with removing other people`s limbs o_o

I`m all for not caring what people do to their own bodies, but I agree with the fact that they have selfish reasons for it. It`s like plastic surgery/beauty modification in some extent. Or maybe it`s not...I dunno. Still, it annoys me that they`d just take their legs/limbs for granted when the people they "idolize" for being amputees would give anything to be able to have their limbs back.

I saw this on the news too. It`s just a selfish yearning to be special, I think. They want to be treated like royalty, and what better way to get that kind of attention then be an amputee.

Psychologically or scientifically, it all makes perfect sense. However, it is completely selfish and delusional. Apparently their self image is incomplete and grossly inaccurate. Due to their selfish act on following through with their mental aspirations, they are a deliberate inconvenience to society and, perhaps, those who love themm. Also, what happens when some poor company gets sued by one of these idiots when they do not have a wheelchair ramp or a handicap parking spot? Will the case hold weight if it was self incuced handicaping??

I agree with the majority, these people are idiots plain and simple...
