Well, if there`s one thing I know for sure...
it`s that flames weigh more than spoons.

from what i heard, from other people if anyone didnt understand what happens is if you look at the end of the fork and spoon they go past the fulcrum point (where the toothpick meets the glass) therefore counter balancing or acting agianst its own weight... hope it helps

The cutlery is the fulcrum? Then how is the fulcrum supported? Someone post a diagram of all the forces involved, because I just can`t visualize it.

I did it and it worked, but then the fork came loose and tried to stab me in the eye. It is some kind of voodoo pooze.

Come on people. The half of the toothpick doesn`t "balance" the weight of the cutlery. Why are you so amazed by this trick??? The weight balance is in the ends of the cutlery. It would be amazing if you could chop the handles off and see it still balance. This was a lame post.

I`m afraid I dont understand, I get how the cutlery balances out each other one way. But there isn`t anything to keep them falling away from the glass. If it`s simple physics, it should be simple for you to explain.

I dont see how he initially balances it in the first place. The toothpick cannot possibly counterbalance the spoon&Fork.
----
sigh the handels go past the center of balance of the toothpick and the removal of part of it isn`t enough to upset the equilibrium.

It still doesn`t add up. The toothpick supposed to be a lever, right? It is a 2nd or 3rd class lever, because the fulcrum precedes or follows all applied forces on it. And the fork and spoon balance each other out, but still exert a gravitational force. So my question is, what balances out that gravitational force?

oh, i get it. the handles of the spoon and fork are pointed towards the cup, moving the center of gravity to the edge of the toothpick

I used to do that all the time but I used two forks instead of a fork and spoon. What it didn`t show you is you can actually pick it up once the toothpick is burned and move it to any point on the rim of the glass and make it balance. Pretty cool way to demonstrate the center of gravity.

the trick is the handles of the forks... I do that trick all the time, and when someone says "that`s fake where`s the strings" or soemthing like that I throw the forks at them.

Hey! The posted my trick! It took me a while to actually get it to balance. I had to edit that out :)

If you look at it from above you will see that the handles extend back past the point where the toothpick rests on the glass. So the center of mass is somewhere near the center of the glass.

It`s like those balancing birds you see where it looks like the thing should fall but it does not (due to counterbalances hidden in the wings). Simple, the pick acts as the birds body(notice the utensils position on the wood) and the ware itself acts as the counter balance.

... I still say this is some voo doo s¢hite.
