It is pretty cool, and props for creativity. But for everyone wondering how it`s possible: this is exactly like those toy birds that balance on their beaks--anyone ever seen those?

I`m afraid I dont understand, I get how the cutlery balances out each other one way. But there isn`t anything to keep them falling away from the glass. If it`s simple physics, it should be simple for you to explain.

It`s like those balancing birds you see where it looks like the thing should fall but it does not (due to counterbalances hidden in the wings). Simple, the pick acts as the birds body(notice the utensils position on the wood) and the ware itself acts as the counter balance.

... I still say this is some voo doo s¢hite.

Jagjamin, the toothpick and spoon&fork are 1 object, and every object has it`s center of mass; in the center of mass, the sum of all gravitational forces is 0, which means the object will not move or is at rest.
If the center of mass is always below the point of support (the place where the glass and toothpick coincide) the object will not tumble.

If you look at it from above you will see that the handles extend back past the point where the toothpick rests on the glass. So the center of mass is somewhere near the center of the glass.

I used to do that all the time but I used two forks instead of a fork and spoon. What it didn`t show you is you can actually pick it up once the toothpick is burned and move it to any point on the rim of the glass and make it balance. Pretty cool way to demonstrate the center of gravity.

It still doesn`t add up. The toothpick supposed to be a lever, right? It is a 2nd or 3rd class lever, because the fulcrum precedes or follows all applied forces on it. And the fork and spoon balance each other out, but still exert a gravitational force. So my question is, what balances out that gravitational force?

I dont see how he initially balances it in the first place. The toothpick cannot possibly counterbalance the spoon&Fork.
    ----
sigh the handels go past the center of balance of the toothpick and the removal of part of it isn`t enough to upset the equilibrium.

Come on people. The half of the toothpick doesn`t "balance" the weight of the cutlery. Why are you so amazed by this trick??? The weight balance is in the ends of the cutlery. It would be amazing if you could chop the handles off and see it still balance. This was a lame post.
