I think the thing we should really be worried about is the rate of poor mental health mentioned in each state`s profile. Some of these states were above 45%.

Of all things to be number one in..hmm... Well, It just goes to show just how bad the health care system is for the elderly poor folks in West Virginia.

Oh- and BTW~ I was not offended by the poster`s comment (Buddy)- Just surprised that WV made it in the number one spot.

Wife, according to your profile you`re between 30-39 so by now you should know how the world works and be used to it.
This is the wrong place and wrong time for you to be offended by a poster comment on a factual survey and express so adamantly your opinions on this.
If you want to try to start a movement be my guest, just pick your starting point a little better.

Wife I don`t see how anyone is treated differently because of the stats observed by state. If like you pointed out the key for the survey was over 65 etc. is there and people chose not to read it then in their ignorance you shouldn`t be bothered.

Acutally you`re right there isn`t a law saying you should consider someone`s feelings, however there is a law about freedom of speech which could/should be exercised in a public forum. I personally tire of people bending over backwards to satisfy others personal beliefs, desires, or ideals. Not just in this particular situation, just in general.

I agree that ethics are an important part in personal and professional life, however, I questioned the relevance to a statistical ranking of states that have more people without their natural teeth.

While your arguments should be argued (elsewhere)if you personally believe in them don`t be a hypocrite to say that others shouldn`t express their ideals differing from yours b/c you find it hurtful.

DMDekoth,

Look closer...your link goes to the numerical totals of suicides, which means that California number one on that list mainly because we have such a large population. If you look at the per capita list (which is the only worthwhile one here) We`re at #43...not bad at all.

okay, i can understand racist, homophobic, and sexist concerns, but "state-ist" is taking it a bit too far, "the wife." How do you think people from Wisconsin feel about all the cheese jokes? Or what about that episode of South Park where everyone in Califirnia was smelling their own farts? honestly, you can`t say anything about anyone these days without getting your head chewed off.

Liquidglass it is discrimination when people are treated different because of the stereotype.

Yes there are people out there that have ethics both in their professional life and personal that they follow in all aspects of life. There are professional people that dedicate their lives to overcoming this social injustice, along with many others.
My whole point was that I felt that this comment was in poor taste. It applied only to people from West Virginia. If you have never lived there then you have no idea how hurtful this type of comment can be. No it is not okay to say bad things about people in a public forum, but it still happens, and there will always be someone who argues that it is okay. No laws says that you must consider anyone else`s feeling when you make comments, but you really should.

Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands aren`t states. Sure, they belong to the US, but they aren`t states.
Woo, #13... thought Missouri`d be higher up. A little disapointed in my home state, Oklahoma, though.

lol dumaspere, yes I live in the South here so I I can see lack of teeth in some of the people here. You assumptions about my trollness, my sexual frustration, and my penis size are all that: assumptions. So no not unless you personally know me would I be insulted, thanks for your comments.

No one directly made any derogatory statements about wife, she took things way to personal, thanks for your opinions, no matter how skewed they might be

Theres a fine line between noting such correlations and making blanket statements, i think comments such as "Why am I not surprised to see West Virgina coming in at number one?" cross the line because of the implication (NB not direct statement) that they all conform to stereotype.

Liquid glass, continuing the list there is probably strong positive correlation between trollish behaviour in male I-A-B members, and small penis size and level of sexual frustration. But it does not mean all trolls score highly on both counts. That`s not insulting to you, I`m sure. What would count as an insult is if I were to say that you sir are a troll, and then go on to make assumptions and derogatory statements about you personally, based on what is statistically likely.

There are tons of social, economic, political, geographical, genetic etc etc factors that come into play in everything. Some factors will create stronger or weaker trends between different traits. Here yes, people in the south tend to have worse teeth. Fact. But what wife finds demeaning is the implication that all people in the south are rednecks, and all of them have bad teeth.

Hahahaha, bit touchy arn`t we? I would understand if people blantently said that the top numbers are a bunch of slack-jawed yokels, but all that is said by the poster is the most lost teeth natuarally (althought people do imply the negative intellegence thing, that is their problem).

"comments such as those that are made about West Virginians is considered to be discriminative."

No wife it`s considered Stereotypical not discriminative, before you spout off attempt to comprehend what you`re going to say.

-I`m still stuck on your little `ppl should keep opinions to themselves if it`s going to hurt someone`s feelings` so pretty much unless you have the same opinion as everyone else, you should keep to yourself, am I understanding that correctly?

the poster said "Why am I not surprised to see West Virgina coming in at number one?"
Wow that was such a well devised and directly insulting comment I don`t know how I`ll ever recover.

Black people eat chicken
White people can`t jump
Jews like to save money
Asians are good at math
.....you can continue the list yourself with stereotypes you`ve heard.

These are stereotypes and not true all the time. However according to the survey the stereotype of people in the east/south eas

lol what does ethics or morals have to do with you posting your ranting opinion that you would prefer being taken as fact.

oh yes, i`m sure me being in North Carolina at number 8 deeply offends me, honestly I`m not worried about anyone else`s teeth but my own, maybe you should try it.

"We all have the right to express our own opinions but not when your words are hurtful to others."

-what is this?
So you`re saying that if someone has an opinion about a general stereotype or a general group of people that they should keep it to themselves in fear of causing harm? That is the most P.C. Sensitive bs I`ve heard in a long time. If someone`s opinion conflicts with yours, get over it. If they are directly insulting you for something you personally have control over then say your little piece and move on, otherwise make your time more productive.

Thank you for the example, it made my point so much better than I did. I do not want anyone to get offended. I am ethicaly and morally obligated to stand up for these issues, and I deal with them on a daily basis. I only want people to understand that comments like this will hurt someone.

thewife does have a point. if someone put up a chart of, say, fried chicken consumption by ethnic group, it wouldn`t be ok to post things like "Why am I not surprised to see the blacks coming in at number one?". So why is it OK to make fun of some ethnic groups but not others?

What you do not understand is that comments such as those that are made about West Virginians is considered to be discriminative. Would you make the same comment if it was directed toward a particular ethnic group? It is the same and hurtful to the people that it is directed at. Comments like this scare me, because they do not consider the feeling of others that are reading it.

Comments about people from W.V. are often directed at intelligence, it was just too ironic not to point out that Virginia was not spelled correctly. I do not think that it is socially ok to make defamatory comments about any group of people, for any reason. It is this continued ignorance of diversity that fuels the belief that such behavior is acceptable. We all have the right to express our own opinions but not when your words are hurtful to others.

By the way, I have been coming here for a long time. I have never had a reason to comment before. I have not read any other posts that were so lackin

The only thing funny about this post is the posters inability to spell V-i-r-g-i-n-i-a!

I think that the poster has something else on his/her mind besides the state of W.V.

By the way I think this post is very offensive. Even people from W.V spell better than that.

Also you might just want to read the definition for the study. It is listed at the bottom.

DEFINITION: Adults aged 65+ who have had all their natural teeth extracted.

It also it may be correlated with income level and insurance availability for the poor.

So Yes you are just so funny, making fun of poor and old people!

Not very socially conscious are you?

Remind me to laugh!
