What a stupid design for something to block the road, you can"t see it when it"s down.

Alright all these people saying "they weren`t tourists, it`s their fault, they knew what they were doing.." What if it WAS a tourist? You see a bus driving down a street, I`ve never heard of bus lanes or bus posts before, I probably would have done the same thing. I have a BABY in my car for Christs sake. It`s not worth endangering LIVES to maintain traffic flow. Retarded.

I like the `bus lock` idea. A secondary benefit is that an unauthorized vehicle could be trapped inside the lock, making it very easy for a police officer to ticket the driver.

To Leu, I dont think the other vehicles were authorised, the only authorised vehicles would be Busses, Emergency Vehicles, Security vehicles and Post Trucks (Mail), plus they wouldnt try and speed through the gap if they were authorised, they`d wait, like with a motorised arm. And the bus-lock idea sounds great!

2 things:

The posts should be set up in a double set of posts: One set in front of the stopped bus and one set behind the bus. This would create a sort of "Bus lock" (as in like an air lock). Bus opens first set, goes in, first set goes up behind bus THEN the second set in front of the bus goes down and the bus drives out. At no time is there a time that someone thinks that they will get through and so accidents like these would not happen. Maybe thats why they lost the lawsuits...

The other thing is a pondering:

Maybe with the first car and the truck that get stuck I wonder if they were authorized vehicles but either their access card/key did not work or they forgot/lost it somewhere. Since the first guy was stopped at the bollard, backed up and waited for a bus it made me wonder. Similar with the truck, it would make sense that another lorry driver could also be an authorized vehicle.

To have drive in foreign country.... some sign are very confusing sometimes... I swear >.< and its not because im a WOMAN driving, its just really get confusing ... And you get nervous, you are lost, you dont know what the hell you doing and where to go...

those could happen... as well as IF you have kids, sitting them in a carseat seem like a torture to them and they will cry and scream until you get home (thanks god, those wasnt my kids)

But yeah, those people seem like they was trying their luck...

AND .. USA people are obessess with warning symbols.. they are everywhere... a pack of salted peanut will be writen "careful, may contains nuts and peanuts" a coffee glass will be written "careful may be hot" this will never be in USA.

I say, I dont have nothing against USA, just take off all the warning symbols and let the problem solve itself? (that quote is not of me^^ and its a JOKE!)

well the bars should at least come up a little faster, so that it prevents the bottom of the car from being raped... think about it. I mean wht if someone whose wife was having a baby was rushing to a hospital and doesnt bother to pay attention to signs....

if they came up too fast the car would just crash into them and it`d be the equivalent of a car crash.

I went into Manchester today and saw these EXACT bollards in action, there are bright LED "NO ENTRY!" signs in front of it (and a further way back so you can see them even if a bus is in front of you!), it says NO ENTRY on a sign on the corner just before it, it makes alarm noises and says "Bollards Lowering" etc, AND there`s a red/green light. If a car has a family in it, and kids in the back etc, then they shouldnt be RUSHING to try and beat the bollard, so again its their own fault for being irresponsible. SOME of these raising bollards (and yes, they`re everywhere) even have a sign explaining what they do etc.

That`s not stupid at all, this is in my city (Manchester, UK), and those posts only lower for busses and officially agreed vehicles who have to press a buzzer to have them lowered, they`re to stop normal vehicles from accessing pedestrianised areas, bus-access-only roads etc, those people who crashed were rushing to get through because they knew they werent supposed to, its their own fault! And yes, it still did its job, no one got through!

That`s a really good idea. Nothing pisses me off more than people ignoring traffic laws just because they probably won`t get caught. We need them here, for the purpose of stopping people at red lights and going straight in a turn-only lane. Not sure how the second one would work though. Just put the buzzers in emergency vehicles to drop them if they need to get through, and have them drop automatically on a green light, and go up on a red light.

sabre, having those polls is a lot cheaper than having a camera and ticketing people, with the polls you pretty much set them and forget them (curse you infomercials and your catchy sayings!) but with cameras and stuff to get the person the ticket you have to do lots of stuff, like send them the ticket in the mail, and if they don`t pay you back in time you gotta like, send out a ticket in the mail, and do lots of other things, and what will get someone`s attention more, a ticket for 50 bucks, or a totaled car?

sabre what kind of example is that, you saw that everyone in the video is speeding trying to get through. I`m not sure how you drive but if I`m behind a big vehicle like a bus, I know it`s going to move slow so there`s no need for me to waste gas. To me it looks like if you were just driving at a normal pace the poles would be up by the time you got to them allowing you to stop.

Until I saw the warning signs, I felt sorry for all but the first person. He backed up and tried to sneak past. Then I saw that they were all trying it. What a bunch of idiots. Morons like that get what they deserve. I`m still not totally crazy about the way they lower and raise but it`s effective so bravo to the designer. As long as people are warned of what will happen I don`t feel sorry for the morons who try to get through anyway. If all of the access areas are set up like that, how do they expect to get out? Taking your chances one time is bad enough, trying it twice is really stupid.

..or important areas. If they are part of public transportation they should be able to withdraw if a vehicle approaches at a speed higher than what would be safe. Just attach a camera to take a picture of their liscense plate (they already do that anyway in many places) and ticket the person that blew through it.

Hmmm...I like the idea. But, what if a young mother (for example) that doesn`t know the city well is driving and gets lost (maybe she`s from out of town??). The kids are in the back seat screaming and she`s trying to find somewhere to stop quickly. She see`s a bus starting to pull forward into a large parking lot ahead and is struggling to keep her 4 year old buckled in as he thinks it`s funny to unbuckle his belt. She pulls where that bus is pulling away from quickly as she struggles to keep the 4 year old still. He unbuckles his belt again distracting her, she hurries to get into that area that the bus is pulling into with all her distractions. WHAM! 4 year old slams into the windshield, her forehead smashes into the windshield, and the crying baby in the backseat gets whiplash that it`s little neck wasn`t designed to take.

^^^^That`s certainly possible, cause there are a lot of distracted drivers out there.

I think they are a good idea....BUT...they should protect government.

Umm unless the lane is marked clearly with "severe axle damage" or something like that, the drivers should be entitled to full damages from the owner of the "bollard". Anyway, the drivers are a bunch of pricks.

Just to those who think it isnt well labelled etc... there are LED "NO ENTRY" signs lit up either side of the road with the raising bollards, by the sides of the bollards there are red and green traffic lights, and the bollards have an alarm to warn when they are raising and lowering.

I remember seeing a test of the ones at government buildings.. there about 30CM wide, they filled a big truck with sand (to give it plenty of weight) and drove it as fast as they could into the bollard... The bollard still managed to go up and down, with very little damage. It pushed the engine block bakwards, and all that got past the actual bollard was some of the body work that smashed off... The could save lives.

The problem is that people wont read road signs, so they deseve to loose their cars engine.

these things are so cool, they`re actually planning, or already have started, putting these up in front of government type buildings, they stay down most of the time, but if some car comes driving at the building, they pop up really quick, and can stop trucks going really fast dead in their tracks, it`s really awesome. =

Lets face it, look at the start of the clip, there is 2 huge red signs saying no entry! If drivers cannot read signs, then they deserve it... If it keeps happening to people, less people will do it.

If you live in the UK, you see them all over the place now, some people install them on reserved parking bays infront of the house.

There has been a few law suits already from people who got damaged by them... and they won. however at the same time, they where also charged with repair charges to the bollards, and fined for using a bus only lane, so really they are not winning at all.

They are the best thing to prevent `rat runners`

Living near heathrow airport, we get a lot of rat runners going through the highstreet, and many of the residents of our village want them installed, because they work.

As for a stupid design, nothing to do with a stupid design, because theres huge signs around them saying that its a bus only lane, and that there is no enrty to normal traffic.

So scre

This is in the Manchester city centre in England. It`s quite a simple concept really, only buses are allowed to go down there so other vehicles know they shouldn`t be there. The bollards get lowered for buses so they can get through but get raised again and if you fancy taking your chances with them in a car then you can see what happens.
