What a load of bull. The oceans and cows put out more methane than we ever did. Perhaps we should kill all the cows. The great majority of greenhouse gases are naturally created. We are not killing the earth; we`re just not making it look as pretty is the few places that we live in.

nobody would replace us that would be cool. insects and pooheads like spiders, ants, wasps, bees, and other hostile species would take over! other mammals and reptiles would not survive. its worth having us here! we`re highly intelligent! and we make great food! and we do what no other species can!

Not quite a lot of bull tealcandtrip. Once we are gone, most of the cows would be gone too as the majority of them are bred by us for food.

That doesn`t work. If you die in a developed country, they either embalm and burry or cremate. Both are terrible for the environment! XD

Besides, a few people comitting suicide is not as effective as convincing bus-loads of children to eat arsenic.

And that`s totally NOT my plan.

    No.

    That would be too easy.

    I mean evil.

    Evil as in wrong.

    Wrong as in... never mind.

I don`t think they`re suggesting we all just go "die," I think this just illustrates what an impact we have made on the world. And maybe suggesting that we need to do something to reverse all this, before everyone and everything on earth DOES die from all the poison in our air, water, and food.
But that`s just what I think.

    Woo! First submission!

And now everyone is pissed off! Woo!!

In regards to the methane bit, Earth naturally cycles methane through its atmosphere, but usually it is kept in a state of equilibrium with CH4 in its organic state. but human agriculture and energy production are throwing off the balance a bit, which is unfortunate because methane is a very extreme greenhouse gas, if I remember GLG 201.

    Wow I`m such a Geology nerd/Environmentalist.

There is an equal amount of evidence disproving global warming and all that hoo-hah. I believe in its existence to an extent, but I don`t think it`ll have "catastrophic effects" on the world.

Funny, how *everyone* predicted massive hurricanes destroying the gulf coast of the US and we haven`t had even one major hurricane THREAT, let alone one to actually hit.

Voluntary Human Extinction is a real movement. I think rather than killing oneself they promote not breeding. Somehow I doubt it will take off, seems like we`d rather just breed ourselves into extinction through overpopulation. Though it would be nice if we could find a middle ground.

thats all a load of bull$hit. heres my theory: humans die because we all kill ourselves with nuclear war and the whole world is in a state of nuclear winter and everything dies and roaches are the only living species on the planet (coz as u noe roaches are immune to radiation) and so roaches survive by eating other roaches and then in a billion or so years roaches evolve and the radiation subsides and other species form but then roaches are the dominant species just like humans are now and they have evolved to become extremely intelligent and build roach cities and are smarter than us humans now and they`d dig up human fossils and be like holy $hit zomgs wtf. (dam thing censors the word C!O!C!K so i cant spell c-o-c-kroaches)

Ya mum... roaches will never develop to be intelligent until they can grow an internal skeleton, stand on their hind legs, develop sweat glands (which leads to speach development as it frees up the lungs- no longer having to pant to stay cool) and evolve a brain big enough to capacitate such activity. By then, they`ll be as much roaches as we are now.

Hrm... doubtful on the CO2 emissions bit... CO2 would still be high since there`s the natural cycle of greenhouse gases rising and falling. And that`s hoping a volcano doesn`t erupt. Volcanoes put more CO2 in the atmosphere than humans could ever dream of.

Even if the timeline isn`t 100% accurate, the truth is the Earth would be better off without mankind. But if we keep raping it, the Earth won`t support us any more and we will all face extinction. Obviously the link isn`t telling us all to kill ourselves. Humans have seriously messed up the balance of nature, and we need to change or we will all die out. The great tragedy would be taking other, innocent species with us.

    Rant of the day.

I won`t enter the global warming discussion but I have to say this: I can`t understand how anyone can justify nuclear power. The waste from every nuclear reactor in use today will still be lethal in several hundred thousand years.

    Several hundred thousand years.

It`s so much time that it`s unfathomable, that it just becomes a number. What our generation is saying to the next two thousand generations or so is "Here, have these piles of slag that kills anything that comes close to them, we created them because we wanted cheap electricity. Keep them safe or well, you`ll die. What`s that? You don`t want them? Not our problem."

Nuclear power is irresponsible and shortsighted. We, as the only species that can make long-term plans should know better.

Oh, and did you know that nuclear power plants has an energy efficiency of something around 4%? That means that only 4% of the energy emitted by the reaction can be converted to usable power like electricity.

tired of nicks, your viewpoints are ignorant. second time around i dont believe this garbage. we made the world better, and theres a number of species that should go down with us because they suck. my last post i mostly mentioned insects. they should die they suck.

nuclear power isnt bad!!!!! damn europeans you have it too its not americans that have it we mostly use coal. if nuclear waste is so bad just launch it into space. but we cant use crappy ass rockets or the GAY SHUTTLES NASA has. a big cannon can shoot this stuff into space into empty regions so it wont be our problem anymore!!!!!!

I can`t believe all you people just got bought off with some crappy little poster that doesn`t even cite sources? ARE ALL OF YOU THAT UNINTELLIGENT AND INCAPABLE OF CRITICAL THINKING? There are so many inaccuracies with that poster, I can`t even begin. Tiredofnicks, you are what`s "irresponsible and shortsighted". Most nuclear waste only needs to be stored for 10-50 years until it`s practically harmless. The rest can be dealt with by transmutation and other methods. My god, I`m at a loss for words at how moronic you are all. I just--, uh, you people should die-- you are what`s wrong with society.

Let me illustrate something for you all.

If the timeline of the existence of life on Earth can be scaled down into one fully-grown adult male holding his arms out away from his sides, then the entire history of human culture can be erased with a single stroke with a nail file across his middle finger.

Since life began - which was around 3 billion years ago - the climate of the planet has always been in balance with the life that was on it.

Early humans appeared maybe a few million years ago, with the roots of human civilization dating back possibly 20,000 years. At that point, humans began to take effect, needlessly hunting other animals to extinction, including the sabre-tooth tiger and woolly mammoth to name 2 examples.

However, human pollution really kicked off only a couple of centuries ago.

Billions of years of balance has been thrown out by the events of 200 years ago onwards.

Humans are destructive as drat and we all know it.

The truth is, we haven`t been here long enough to even begin to guess whether or not things like global warming would happen anyway. Some evidence suggests that the world is on a cycle, and that ice-ages and warm periods of high sea levels destroying coastal cities might be perfectly normal. I don`t know about that.

But what I do know is that pumping out millions of tonnes of Carbon Dioxide every year, along with toxic waste lasting longer than we have even existed as a species, lead in the atmosphere, CFCs, and over-depletion of natural resources like fish can`t be helping.

It`s up to us to make sure that our children have a world they can live in safely.

bapinney: Yes, much but not all of the actual reactive mass can be transmuted into other, less dangerous materials. What CAN`T be transmuted is the irradiated concrete, steel, carbon, lead and other materials used in the buildings and that needs to be permanently disposed of.

It`s 4.30am here, I`m so tired I can`t see straight, and I can`t find any actual pages that state the exact amount of time it needs to be stored, but the ones I found take permanent disposal for granted.

From Disposal of high-level radioactive waste by the French Nuclear Agency:
    Paragraph IV, line 12:

"With a suitable choice of waste packaging, backfill, and geological environment, the radioactive materials should remain isolated from man`s environment for many tens of thousands of years at least.

tiredofnicks you need to think a little more logical before you freak out about this.
    1) The VERY longest any nuclear waste can last is 1 million years, and that`s only a theory for the one stockpile of waste in britian because of it`s massive size it`ll take that long to become harmless. If it was moved and "thinned" out it would take less time.

    2) Your little "fact" about nuclear power plants only using 4% of the energy they produce, lol. Think about it, everything produces energy, when you walk you are using and converting energy, and most of that energy builds up on your skin and dissipates, so you, yourself are not an efficient energy machine, that little 4% `fact` is either fake or made up by people going for the "shock" value.

Alright, lemme `splain something to all y`all in words you can`t understand because most of you have an incomprehensible sense of logical reasoning. Just because an isotope like the oh-so-scary Pu-239 has a long half-life of 24,000 years and thus is radioactive for 100,000 years mean its dangerous? Your thought process seems to be "Well, I am no scientist, but 100,000 is a big number, and that was a cool photoshop filter used on that poster, so... yes." The correct answer is actually no. Tiredofnick, it only took me 15 seconds to find a link. http://russp.org/BLC-3.html . There you go, that puts the biggest one right out of the way. But no one here who gave this stupid poster a rating above 1 is going to read this article. This article wasn`t made with special photoshop filters; plus, it cites sources, and you have to read. Go ahead everyone, give your expert testomony, you strong, highly regarded authorities on ignorance.

This was really stupid in some specific areas, but interesting in the overall general picture. Doesn`t make me want to go out and kill myself, though. Some points of it`s stupidity? Where do they get the information that leads them to think that all "metal and glass" buildings will necessarily collapse within two-hundred years? Oh, and this is my favorite: that within 100-200 years, all BRIDGES will collapse! What are they talking about? There are roman bridges that have survived in Italy for over 2,000 years! Where do they get this information? It`s a little dodgy, so I don`t necessarily embrace the entire picture since a sum is not more than the whole of it`s parts.

And as for alot of people saying its bull sh*t, i think they should do some research before they properly judge the article- for example, most concrete buildings are much younger than 200 years old before they are considered to be structurly unsafe.

Ok, this go to all those seemingly brainless idiots out there: 1) global temperature changes (as well as other physical and climatical changes on Earth) happen naturally; the problem is, not at the rate they are now. 2)gases contributing to the green house effect are indeed caused by rumiants and other sources, but once again, mankind has taken those levels to a critical point. 3) It is true, this is not some crap to take people`s money, as somebody mentioned above. 4) Earth would obviously be better off if mankind had never existed. However, that is not the case. "If Humans Dissapeared" is only meant to illustrate how long it really takes the Earth to recover from the various waste we throw. If you read it carefully, you will realise that at the very end, it mentions how, despite many harmful agents of pollution would go away with time if human activity ceased immediately, there are other things -like radiation- that takes millions of years to dissapear.

to say, it "may" be a good idea, or perhaps why not "just in case", i can see this, to say it is happening, there is no proof just charlatans

humans are not powerful enough, not at billion or 100 trillion, it`s just not possible

to make the world inhospitable for humans not entirely possible but a much better case, since we have precedence. you cannot take the same matter & use it to destroy itself, it`s i m p o s s i b l e, the earth will take a natural course with or without humans with little to no effect

saintnick, really, you shouldn`t take criticism in such a way.
It`s not healthy. People have different opinions on different matters, but you can`t actually expect me to agree with you on the fact that there is no proof that global levels of some gases were lower before than they are now.
Wanna know why? because if you took the time to do some serious research, you`d find that scientists have been carrying out investigations for years to study human impact on the environment. you tell me to stay in school and be careful with brainwashing teachers . . .
let me just tell you that I do not base my opinions on what other people tell me, but on my own judgement; drawing conclusions from what I can see and understand, not simply denying facts based on nothing.

Oh, for god`s sake, Saintnick! Just because my opinion is different from yours it doesn`t mean you have to post links like"MASS EXTINCTION UNDERWAY". Once again, you seem to have missed the point; I do not support mass extinction, nor does the original link ("If humans dissapeared") say that. It merely shows a possible scenario if mankind dissapeared, but that doesn`t mean the author is trying to convince everyone to commit suicide! It is underlining the impact people have on the environment. But of course, if someone who refused to be brainwashed by teachers, also refused to let them brainwash him into a correct interpretation of texts . . .

`xtreme_dude`: Chimps wouldn`t evolve into humans. Chimpanzee`s and modern-day humans share a common ancester, meaning they both arose from one species (a process called speciation) gradually evolving into what we see them as today.

Darwin said species are just a snapshot of evolution, because things are constantly changing. Like if you took a photograph of yourself everyday until you died - it would slowly change.

P.S. you shouldn`t fear offending somebody`s religious beliefs. Religious people don`t hesitate to offend your own beliefs with their indoctrination and presumption.
