It`s a really good read, although some of the figures are out of date given that it was written in 1990 - but seeing the way the world and perceptions of beauty has changed it only makes the figures all the more shocking.
It`s not just one for the girls either, it touches on how the beauty myth affects men, even if it`s just through how it affects women.
While I have some doubts about the Dove campaign, I think overall it`s more positive than anything else. Some people have critisised how extreme the shop was, but I think the point is that that is what *can* be done.
And people saying she was ugly before or after, I think you`re kind of missing the point.
She didn`t look a whole lot different afterwards.
oh sorry thats something else i got goin on..
Personally, I hate with an unparalleled passion the demand of anyone - actually other women more so than men - that I try to live up to some insane standard of perfection...and yet because I started out sitting in the car seat being driven past billboards full of airbrushed fiction, I can still very easily fall into the trap of feeling that I`m not what I should be. Personally, I think that rather than blaming the victim and saying women have to be resilient, there should be some kind of effort to counteract the damage or prevent it entirely...Dove`s effort may be small, but if it`s sincere, I say God bless them a
Tch, I don`t suppose you`ve ever been on a wlk in a bush/forest/woods/whatever, anything with trees and nature?
I disagree with this comment. The real truth is is that as time goes on the perception of beauty will become more and more distorted as long as we have the means to manipulate reality.
Just take a look at an old fashion shot from the 70`s, while people were very drawn to the natural beauty back then, for most, now its not enough.
Too bad that`s all I have.
The looking glass self.
But then again, since most people are average looking, and average isn`t good enough for today, it`s really not a shock.
But nothing`s worse than a pretty person who feels ugly, it`s all in your mindset.
And I think there are no Cannibal clones because (hopefully) they were all banned.
But i cant help thinking this is very sneaky advertising cos it makes us feel good to see their adverts. They`re telling us to be naturally beautiful but at the same time they want us to buy their stuff so we can mask our beauty up with products! Like someone said - its "like marlboro giving out stop-smoking resources..."
I also can`t believe some idiot hasn`t yet gone crazy about the fact it`s a shop. Cannibal151`s followers (if he had any) have gone!
or has anyone seen this?http://homepage.mac.com/gapodaca/digital...
Now, they DO touch it up a lot when singers or other people who weren`t models to begin with are in magazine covers and sh*t. They don`t have their job for being good-looking like models do, but they still have to have their pictures everywhere.
Finally there`s the fact that the lack of two lenses to create a 3d image like our eyes do, makes everything look fat and short. Try looking at any object then closing one eye.
This hot chick phenomenon (though the super hot ones enjoy being super models for the record)...
Combined with the 3d effect I`d say makes up for about 50% of the improvment. The other 50% I think people genuinly notice.
Some are silly, but I`m really not too fond of this whole "self esteme" campeign crap.
What I don`t get is the name of that damn fund. How do you give someone self-esteem? Even more, how do you PAY for it? It`s something they have to build themselves. Think about it, if they try to help someone with it, the person is really comfirmed that their ugly and so need more self-esteem. Besides, my lack of self-esteem comes from being uglier than the people around me, not the frikin models. People don`t fall in love with billboards.
Yes... MOST obese adults are lazy...As for kids being fat... I blame the parents...
I look beautiful :D :)
As far as the weight issue goes, it IS getting out of control. I see plus sized clothing for sale now for kids who are 5 or 6 years old. That`s sad. It`s not genetics, it`s being fat and lazy. Instead of being out playing ball and riding bikes, they`re parked in front of a screen all day. Instead of eating apples and carrots with a cookie now and then, they eat deep fried Twinkies. It`s insane. I saw a commercial for a restaurant that now serves fried green beans as an appetizer. WTF??? No wonder people are so fat. If you`re naturally larger that`s fine, but a lot of people are just fat, lazy pigs.
I do think that photo-shopping that drastically is wrong BUT (to all the people that mention girls starving themselves in the news) In the UK about 46% of men and 32% of women are overweight. And between 5 per cent and 10 per cent of girls and women (i.e. 5-10 million people) and 1 million boys and men suffer from eating disorders.
Which percentage is higher? I think companies and websites dedicated to telling women big is beautiful is stupidly over-rated. More people should be tackling the obese.
This is only in the UK because I only know about the UK....
But you see, that would require getting up...
as for the video....shame. i didnt find the end product that attractive either. made me think of latex with powder sprinkled on it O.o
Things have to begin somewhere, right? After all, if no one does it, it`ll never get done.
And Austin, Photoshop is the name of a specific type of software, Adobe makes it.
As for the pics, it`s interesting if you look on model photos from the 1930`s, 1940`s, 1950`s when you could not alter a photo easily. The women were very beautiful, just more natural. Too bad we can`t aim more toward that again.
damn magazines... damn my subscription isnt over yet... ahem...
No, and that`s because you`re disillusioned :D
And wow, I want the music.
that`s crazy though, for far they can go.
I don`t know what to say..except..they`re right. And I congratulate Dove for what they`re trying to do..but it probably won`t make much of a difference, unfortunately.
