Amazing what makeup and some photoshopping can do.

ops with my facepaint photo on then posting of the overmaking of her make up that seems odd eh. Grin.
Anyway there we have it. Just wanted to say a bit on the subject.
I would not want someone to pick me on looks alone but, to see deeper so in ways I am glad I am not perfect and I am not special or what shallows would call pretty I think.

Some people have a different idea of beauty. I think the natural look of her was way better than the ending fake look. Too much make up and touch ups make people look plastic or fake.
Everyone has a different idea of beauty.

I`m in school for photography right now. The reason they use attractive people as models is because it takes a lot of time and talent to create a pretty face on photoshop. It can take up to 10 hours to get a face perfectly done for a print campaign.

Not exactly a newsflash. And even with all the modifications, I don`t see the appeal. I personally don`t find myself attracted to a magazine page or a television screen. It`s usually not art, and it certainly isn`t beauty. It`s a business construct with the purpose of getting you to buy something: a product, movie, album, or idea.

You wanna know the really sad thing, I actually am going to school to do that for a living... make-up for the modeling/movie industry...but I am great with a make-up brush and I wont be a part of the photoshopping...she was way more beautiful before the photoshopped her...her face was much more in proportion and her head looked way more oval...which is what those studies that babies look at beautiful people more came from, people including babies find an oval and proportionate face more pleasing to the eye, that`s why we like to look at beautiful people. That`s what make-up tries to do even in the 1930`s-50`s pictures. It hides the flaws of the face... sadly most people can`t tell that beauty is all an illusion, natural beauty in the sense that we know it is very hard to find, people now don`t think beauty is in flaws anymore...

I would recommend Naomi Woolf`s "The Beauty Myth" to anyone interested in finding out about the causes behind many womens obsession with `beauty` - especially Suicism.

It`s a really good read, although some of the figures are out of date given that it was written in 1990 - but seeing the way the world and perceptions of beauty has changed it only makes the figures all the more shocking.

It`s not just one for the girls either, it touches on how the beauty myth affects men, even if it`s just through how it affects women.

While I have some doubts about the Dove campaign, I think overall it`s more positive than anything else. Some people have critisised how extreme the shop was, but I think the point is that that is what *can* be done.

And people saying she was ugly before or after, I think you`re kind of missing the point.

What some people don`t get is that when you literally grow up from the cradle seeing these idealized images of what`s "beautiful," it distorts your perception. It`s basic psychology; the world you`re born into is the world you live in. You`ll always have that pull toward the first things you were exposed to because at that time it was the only reality you knew.

Personally, I hate with an unparalleled passion the demand of anyone - actually other women more so than men - that I try to live up to some insane standard of perfection...and yet because I started out sitting in the car seat being driven past billboards full of airbrushed fiction, I can still very easily fall into the trap of feeling that I`m not what I should be. Personally, I think that rather than blaming the victim and saying women have to be resilient, there should be some kind of effort to counteract the damage or prevent it entirely...Dove`s effort may be small, but if it`s sincere, I say God bless them a

CheezeLuv, but why do women NEED a self-esteem fund, unless they`re mindless drones and slaves to perception? They obviously possess these traits for evolutionary reasons don`t they, being so hyper-sensitive to social mores and approval? I`m sick of it! Don`t blame the companies who CATER to this ingrained perception of beauty in men! And don`t blame men for the mindlessness of females who fall all over themselves in pursuit of it! Nature is responsible for their GENERALLY submissive predisposition, not us! They just wanna reproduce as much as we do, and follow a different tactic as set forth by years of environmental adaptation! Otherwise, they wouldn`t need the "Self-Esteem" fund. That is the lamest, most priss-ass piece of dog-shiite title I have EVER heard for something established to assure a certain group of people that they are not the subservient peons to somebody else`s perceptions, or demands. You want REAL women`s liberation? Try reading the Satanic Witch

So I guess girls are just mindless drones with no sense of beauty on their own except for what men find attractive. Slaves to perception, you might say. Looks like feminism has failed! But as some of you have pointed out, like Sarah of Borg, no one looks like that in real life (I have seen women that beautiful and more in real life), and our perception of beauty is somehow an illusion, or inculcated into our minds through the media; yet, you refer to the illusion as being employed to achieve an IDEALISTIC proportion that no one has. Well, why is that proportion IDEALISTIC in the first place, if not preprogrammed! You can`t have the chicken before the egg, and not the egg before the chicken. Life imitates art imitates life. These things are preprogrammed to a large degree, as dudeman1st pointed out, and are recognized WORLDWIDE as symbols of beauty; the hourglass figure (reproductive advantage), symmetry (worshipped in every species) and health. Our ideals aren`t arbitrary!

I think even just the photoshopping was pointless. She looked pretty without all that. Hell, she was beautiful without the make-up! All she had to do was brush her hair, and maybe wash her face lol..She`s pretty! Dove rules!! They are doing exacly what the world needs right now. Our perception of beauty is so distorted. Some people may be not-so-attractive on the outside, but most are very nice people! But, take a look at some beautiful people. A lot of them think they`re "all that", and are rude. Take a look around..

I disagree with this comment. The real truth is is that as time goes on the perception of beauty will become more and more distorted as long as we have the means to manipulate reality.

Just take a look at an old fashion shot from the 70`s, while people were very drawn to the natural beauty back then, for most, now its not enough.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Honestly, that quote couldn`t be more true. I mean first off, looks are NOT everything. A pretty girl doesn`t turn my head, I don`t oggle pretty women. There was a time in my life when I did do that, but have grown out of that stage. I have been told numerous times that people don`t understand why I like XXXXXXX because she isn`t very good looking. Beauty, to me, isn`t based on physical appearence. I fall for people with beautiful personalities, not because of a beautiful face. I hate when girls call themselves fat or ugly based on what society calls beautiful. I can`t count the number of times one of my friends called herself fat and that she needed to lose weight. Man, she was thin, beautiful, and had the most wonderful personality. She brought a smile to my face everytime I saw her. It all comes down to beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Well, Dove doesn`t sell makeup to my knowledge, only skin and hair products like skin cream, cleansers, etc. It`s to improve your natural skin condition so that women can see that their natural skin and complexion really is beautiful, to help their self-esteem (with no thanks to beauty ads).

But nothing`s worse than a pretty person who feels ugly, it`s all in your mindset.

In my opinion, our definition of beautiful changes with each passes fasion trend. We were all made to look different and unique, not beautiful and ugly. We`ve just become so attached on looks now-a-days, that we don`t really know what beauty is anymore. We look at super models and movie stars and call them beautiful, but they aren`t all that great looking to EVERYONE. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The media is distorting our views on what is beauty, that`s for sure. I have to say that Dove is doing something wonderful here by trying to tell girls that they don`t have to look like models to be pretty. In fact, most guys I know REALIZE that people don`t look that perfect in the real world. The only guys that insist on dating superpretty, superskinny girls are either shallow or found a girl he likes that happens to be blessed with a good body.
Most people in the world don`t expect girls to actually look like this, so I wonder why girls think that just because magazines do this, they`re expected to look perfect to get attention from guys. I`m no where near that but I am pretty and sexy and I got a guy. I wish girls knew that the real world has real expectations. Only hollywood expects you to look like that.

The example in this is kind of an extreme, they usually try to use models who already look good and are photogenic to cut the time and money used on photo editing. I know that usually they touch up the eyebrows, skin flaws, stray hairs, etc. but this was unrealistic. They don`t take some average chick off the street to be a model and say, `Oh, we can just photoshop that later`.

Now, they DO touch it up a lot when singers or other people who weren`t models to begin with are in magazine covers and sh*t. They don`t have their job for being good-looking like models do, but they still have to have their pictures everywhere.

Male 438
Because that is a hot chick, without the make up. Many very hot girls also don`t enjoy being models. (because some guys don`t like it.)... so most of the girls are a small step down. Anyway, girls go to shoots without their own expert make up because the studio always does it better.

Finally there`s the fact that the lack of two lenses to create a 3d image like our eyes do, makes everything look fat and short. Try looking at any object then closing one eye.

This hot chick phenomenon (though the super hot ones enjoy being super models for the record)...

Combined with the 3d effect I`d say makes up for about 50% of the improvment. The other 50% I think people genuinly notice.

Some are silly, but I`m really not too fond of this whole "self esteme" campeign crap.

There are plenty of people who are beautiful, without all of that. I think that with all the makeup and photoshoping, it just makes other people feel bad about themselves. People should embrace their natural beauty, and forget about having to look like a model or be as skinny as a toothpick. You can be beautiful just being yourself, and if everyone would stop getting all this plastic surgery(unless nessesary,) wearing all this makeup, and just be themselves they could look at everyone around them and fell good about themselves. People do not look like that no one looks like that. Everyone needs to just be themselves instead of trying to change, then everyone can feel good.

I don`t know if they run in the States, but here in Germany Dove has billboards of regular-sized women in bra and panties. None of the stick figured women you`d normally see in those ads. They`re laughing and standing proud and it`s nice to see. I like the campaign and think that knowledge is power and power can lead to self esteem, so, I think it`s a good thing. :-)

i dont think sself esteem comes from what you look like. it is something that has to be built up from within. it comes from what you do. you clean your house, exercise, keep yourself clean, etc, youre gonna feel alot better about yourself and about life than somebody that is "beautiful" on the outside and doesnt take care of themselvses

Ya know what`s funny? I`m 13, sit in front of the computer all i can, I`m lazy as can be, yet I`m 95 pounds, which I think is slightly underweight. My brother, however, who is in 5th grade, weighs more than me and I`m pretty sure is overweight. I swear, other than the fact we have the same color hair, we are complete opposites (not just in weight, in everything.... excluding sometimes explosive temper at eachother)

What I don`t get is the name of that damn fund. How do you give someone self-esteem? Even more, how do you PAY for it? It`s something they have to build themselves. Think about it, if they try to help someone with it, the person is really comfirmed that their ugly and so need more self-esteem. Besides, my lack of self-esteem comes from being uglier than the people around me, not the frikin models. People don`t fall in love with billboards.

I agree with most of the comments here. I knew that work was done on pictures in billboards and magazines. They even do it to the big stars. I didn`t really believe it was that extreme but I was just shown that it is. That`s sad. She was beautiful before the photoshopping was done. No need to distort it like that.

As far as the weight issue goes, it IS getting out of control. I see plus sized clothing for sale now for kids who are 5 or 6 years old. That`s sad. It`s not genetics, it`s being fat and lazy. Instead of being out playing ball and riding bikes, they`re parked in front of a screen all day. Instead of eating apples and carrots with a cookie now and then, they eat deep fried Twinkies. It`s insane. I saw a commercial for a restaurant that now serves fried green beans as an appetizer. WTF??? No wonder people are so fat. If you`re naturally larger that`s fine, but a lot of people are just fat, lazy pigs.

I do think that photo-shopping that drastically is wrong
BUT
(to all the people that mention girls starving themselves in the news) In the UK about 46% of men and 32% of women are overweight. And between 5 per cent and 10 per cent of girls and women (i.e. 5-10 million people) and 1 million boys and men suffer from eating disorders.

Which percentage is higher? I think companies and websites dedicated to telling women big is beautiful is stupidly over-rated. More people should be tackling the obese.

This is only in the UK because I only know about the UK....

Dudeman, it`s interesting you jump from "Beauty" to "Fat" even though the web is full of Big, Beautiful Woman sites and there are large size models.

And Austin, Photoshop is the name of a specific type of software, Adobe makes it.

As for the pics, it`s interesting if you look on model photos from the 1930`s, 1940`s, 1950`s when you could not alter a photo easily. The women were very beautiful, just more natural. Too bad we can`t aim more toward that again.

I think DMDekoth meant after she got made over but before she got photoshopped.. which I agree. Her hair was beautiful, too, but they had to fix that too. Stupid.

"Am I crazy for thinking she was fine before?"

No, and that`s because you`re disillusioned :D

"but why don`t they just start with a hot chick"
You don`t get it at all. NO one looks like the end product of that process, in reality. But the real truth is that reality isn`t pretty, but when you alter reality it looks beautiful.
Looking beautiful is about illusion, about making yourself look more idealistically perportioned than is humanly possible. To look like Barbie.
So remember, anytime you see a photo of some one who looks too beautiful to be real, well that`s because they arn`t! Real people don`t look like make-up ads and never will.
For example, no adult has eyes that big, and no person under 7 feet tall has a neck that long. Often they stretch the legs out to be 5 feet long.

That`s amazing, but why don`t they just start with a hot chick? It would save a lot of money. Besides, isn`t our perception of beauty preprogrammed? There`s all kinds of studies done where babies spend more time looking at the faces of beautiful people. I appreciate Dove`s sentiment, but beautiful people will always be given advantage, for better or worse. <rant> I just hope they don`t get on the whole "it`s okay to be fat" bandwagon. Fat is just unhealthy and unnatural, no matter what people say. Yah, some people are naturally big, and that`s ok. I ain`t much of a flyweight, myself. But you look around these days and it`s like, damn, take a walk to the park and lay off the Krispy Cremes. </rant>

they go for models because the less money they have to spend on photoshopping the better. Apparantly it`s insanely expensive...

that`s crazy though, for far they can go.

well of course she didnt look that good going in... i mean she didnt do anything for herself because she knew she was going to get her hair/face done. now the whole photoshopping thing was pretty drastic... why not just get a picture from google and work off of that

Makes me wonder why they even bother with models at all, when they can probably make even the fugliest woman look stunning that way.

I agree. ^^

I don`t know what to say..except..they`re right. And I congratulate Dove for what they`re trying to do..but it probably won`t make much of a difference, unfortunately.

I don`t think people realize just *how* different it is from what you start with and what you end up with. For example, the neck stretching, the making of the eyes bigger, etc.
