Scary that these are being used right now in the US.

Scary. But hell, why do I care? I`m a 13-year-old.

Politics drive everyone insane. But I guess *someone* has to care. I sure don`t, but I couldn`t do anything about it anyway. ^~^;;

Its worse than before! Diebold, the company that made the machines, gave money to one political party. Take a guess, and its NOT democrats.

If this really makes ya mad, why dont you guys get on the phone to your congressman? As a working democracy, we americans heve the right to demand that something be done, this is the beauty of our constitution. Stop runnin your mouthes about Bush and do something about it!

This is why all southerners should be banned from commenting on this site.

Of course..because everone in the south loves it, wants the confedracy to rise again and are active members of the KKK..

Tell me, how many people`s brains turn off at mentions of politics, yet they continue to keep yammering?

How (and if!) Bush won his first election will be debated for many yeyrs to come. However, he did win his second, voted in fairly and squarely, given a mandate to govern American and influence the rest of the world for another 4 years. And that`s the election result that worries me.

I remember from his first election, there wasn`t controversy about these machines, it was all about hanging chads etc so although the flaw in this voting method is worrying, I don`t think it won Bush the election.

thanks for the common sense mikbry24, at least some folks can think on their own.

& SpoonFork, you should investigate everything, you only run into trouble when you believe something just because people repeat it over & over with no proof, basically it`s mind numbing you into agreeing

btw, the infected memory cards not used could be investigated with a different device to prove if this occurred, personally i doubt anyone has ever hacked a real one

any method that is used someone will claim repulicans cheated, notice how no one in the media ever claims a democrat cheated. i`m more interested in why that is true than how these silly boxes can be hacked. worse yet, too many folks believe what the media tells them without even questioning the facts behind the news, hows that for "1984" doublespeak.

WOW, there sure seem to be many experts on here on how voting machines work after watching a very boring video; but I guess that a boring film lends the video some legitamcy (Not that I count myself as an expert, but Mikey Moore movies and those proclaming to be from Princeton do not make you an expert as well).

Oh by the way, On what the Pope said...

Two things. While I do believe Bush won an election on account of false pretenses. I wouldnt say it was the voting machine that helped him win. The state that was in dispute if you remember was good ol florida. And who happens to be the Governor of florida you ask? Why its non other then Jeb Bush. Hmm interesting family ties in the state you won controversially? and secondly if anyone ever thinks any politician wins a fair election, your all full of crap. All politicians lie or steal to win an election. The better ones just dont get caught. So its not who lied or cheated on election day, its to what extent they did.

For example: California has somewhere around one vote for every 604,936 Californians and North Dakota has about one vote for every 212,740 citizens.

But popular vote decides the Electoral College, so it shouldn`t be downgraded as worthless.

And don`t forget that the popular vote means nothing anyway. It`s the Electoral College that decides our fate.

And we all know pencil votes are much more reliable. Because the eraser hasn`t been invented yet, and no one has ever "miscounted" ballots.

Wait a minute....!

I was just thinking...if you can crack into a voting machine...and manipulate the number of votes that each candidate were to receive...

By golly, you could probably change the entire results of an election altogether!

Well, that sucks. Minus one for technology.

I bet if they had a software update memory card laying around somewhere, someone could easily swap them and you`d have an official installing the virus.

Heck. Whats to say that the officials couldn`t be in on it (if it were to happen, or did)

Whatreallyhappened.com is TOTALLY a respected site.

Give me a break. I believe the voting machines were hacked, yes, but providing a link to whatreallyhappened.com is a sure way to tell others that you have no idea what you`re talking about.

Honestly. The site claims you don`t need water to live. What a load of BS.

Darkplanet, after watching that video, I finally see some reasonable evidence that it is possible Bush rigged the election, though just because it is possible doesn`t mean it happened.

Now, I went and followed your link, and if you really want to give some evidence, might I suggest NOT getting it from that site?

The same site that claims that FDR KNEW about the attack on Pearl Harbor before it happened.

Many locks are easy to pick, but that`s not the point.

The point here is, that the memory card isn`t the problem when software updates happen, it transmits this message to other Diebold machines. Causing them to be infected as well, infecting ONE machine may infect hundreds.

That`s the problem, and do you think Bush really won the election? Come on, like it was said earlier, the exit polls have never been wrong before!

Kind of weird don`t you think?

Can we stop all the bush argument for attention getting crap, this isn`t cool...

The reason anti-virus software would be extremely hard to instal... is the Memory cards are used to give SOFTWARE Updates to the machines.

The virus acts like a malicious software update, in any case... this is the essential flaw in them.

Locks are actually incredibly easy to pick, with new not so widley known methods, check it out.

http://www.toool.nl/bumping.pdf

and no evidence is left as opposed to the case of picking.

The main issue, is that several million votes would have to be changed, and if the virus WERE put on a software updating memory card, (I`m sure they are used for both updates, and storage), say 6 months before an election so that the virus could spread significantly, it would 1 have to delete itself from all memory cards by a certain date, and two would even taking this into account have a 6 month detection window, knowning what we know that`s

That`s exactly what happened in my country, in Venezuela. Just that Jimmy Carter (with his witnesses) and the president at that time of the OEA (Cesar Gaviria) said that everything was OK.
THAM YOU BOTH!, NOW WE HAVE A DICTATOR AS A "DEMOCRATIC" PRESIDENT!

It`s not like this is the only way to fix an election. Many presidents have been elected under highly suspicious circumstances. Ballotbox stuffing, post-mortem voting, this is just a new version of that. Were this to actually occur, it would not be the first time an official would be elected fraudulently.

"How do you think Bush won the last election when exit polls (which have never been wrong in any previous election in history) all clearly showed Kerry as the winner."

Deserves repeating. You at least have to look into this. At least.

Uh yeah....someone took that one card around and infected all the Diebold machines individually. That seems like a reasonable conspiracy theory as to why Bush won. It couldn`t be that people actually voted for him. Hacking the machines one at a time with a card is far more likely, right? You guys will believe anything. B-| I also take umbrage to any Canadian calling a US Citizen a Redneck. Take off, Eh? You Hoser.....Perhaps Bush won by even more votes, did you ever think of that? Maybe the Kerry camp actually stole votes and Bush actually won by a landslide! I can`t fathom as many people voting for Kerry as they did, so that must be what happened! If you believe a conspiracy theory like this, you shouldn`t be allowed to vote in the first place....

I can`t believe that this news hasn`t been more wide spread. No one wanted to acknowledge it before because they where scared or they just didn`t care. Well now that this prez dragged us into this crappy war, those of you voting age will do something about it this time around.

Maybe, just maybe, he did just like EVERY OTHER F*CKING PRESIDENT and won the usual way.

Get over yourselves.

The makers of this voting machine are under investigation for having ties with Jack Abramoff.not only that, but it was deliberate in it`s design to make it easily hackable.

"Scary" is the understatement of the year. How do you think Bush won the last election when exit polls (which have never been wrong in any previous election in history) all clearly showed Kerry as the winner. Again, although most IMB visitors are too young to care I would encourage you all to look into this stuff for yourselves: http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/2004vo...

Vikstar... for the memory card spreading, as opposed to just "one per machine", it specifically mentioned that some memory cards just contain software updates, so they will touch many machines during the update process.

Male 316
Hm, this seems rather stupid. Infecting the machine with the virus is possible if you have a key, but taking out the screws would take much longer. And wouldn`t the officials be suspicious of the noise you would be making. Okay, so let`s say that you manage to put a virus on it. How about make it so that the only program running IS the vote count program that accurately measures it. That way, the people would have to overwrite the vote count program to actually steal votes. Then, after the machine is booting up, it could require a download from the main server that replaces the program in case of an update. I don`t think it would be so easy if simple changes were made

Why would the memory card from one machine get put into another machine, which is what would need to happen for many machines to be infected? Wouldn`t one machine just always keep the same memory card? And if this is not the case currently, then it should be! Then this software wouldn`t spread.

I am sure that it wouldn`t be too hard to develop an anti-this-malicious-software programme that can be run when the polling station staff run their initial checks.
