    ""Thanks for telling everyone.""

I`d rather have everyone learn at the same time than have the burglars learn a month before I do.

keeping information secret for `security` is like being given a choice before you go into the boxing ring: both fighters are blindfolded, or neither are. Oh, and the other guy might lift his blindfold, but you`d never know about it.

Frankly, those are crappy locks. I looked at my keys, they all have a little "lip" at the end of the teeth, making a "bump key" impossible: the lip prevents the key from going any further into the lock.

In Europe locks are normally installed so that the pins are on the bottom of the lock being pushed upwards, as opposed to N. American locks which are properly installed with the pins being pushed down from above. This is why a typical Weiser, Kwikset or Schlage lock in good condition won`t open using a "bumpkey".

The good thing is, legitimate locksmiths can open people`s cars when they lock themselves out, but the bad side is the huge number of thieves. It wouldn`t be so bad, but insurance wouldn`t cover it without damage to the lock or door most of the time. Owch. This is why I like a chain or keycard on my door. Too bad I only get key cards when I go to a hotel or vacation.

Wondering when some of this would show up. Many locks are poorly made and really should not be depended on as your sole source of security. There are many ways to break into locks and a skilled picked will have no trouble. Bumping is a simple thing to do there are other simple ways to defeat locks.

You are never as safe as you think you are.

Mazztek; When you make a bump key, that lip (called the shoulder) has a very small amount filed off. The same happens to the front of the key. Normally, only .25 to .5 mm is taken off. Shave all the other bumps to the lowest setting, (9) and then you have a bump key and can take you neighbors TV.
