Hey...the date featured on the show was my birthday :D Now although I think this may have given a bit too much information, it also wakes up people who have easy to pick locks. I checked out my keys...they have a lip! Yay!

Gandrea, non-European locks can also be opened using this method according to Newsweek.

Mazztek; When you make a bump key, that lip (called the shoulder) has a very small amount filed off. The same happens to the front of the key. Normally, only .25 to .5 mm is taken off. Shave all the other bumps to the lowest setting, (9) and then you have a bump key and can take you neighbors TV.

IT`S EASIER TO BREAK INTO A HOUSE JUST GIVING IT A BADASS DRAGON KICK OR USE A LIGHTSABER TO MELT THROUGH THE DOOR.

Wondering when some of this would show up. Many locks are poorly made and really should not be depended on as your sole source of security. There are many ways to break into locks and a skilled picked will have no trouble. Bumping is a simple thing to do there are other simple ways to defeat locks.

You are never as safe as you think you are.

The good thing is, legitimate locksmiths can open people`s cars when they lock themselves out, but the bad side is the huge number of thieves. It wouldn`t be so bad, but insurance wouldn`t cover it without damage to the lock or door most of the time. Owch. This is why I like a chain or keycard on my door. Too bad I only get key cards when I go to a hotel or vacation.

In Europe locks are normally installed so that the pins are on the bottom of the lock being pushed upwards, as opposed to N. American locks which are properly installed with the pins being pushed down from above. This is why a typical Weiser, Kwikset or Schlage lock in good condition won`t open using a "bumpkey".

I probably a little late on this by not having alot of people see it but I went to defcon 14 a week ago and they talk about this it was scary. They rented a P.O. box at the ups store and an the U.S. post office and broke into them both.

Computer locks can be hacked just as easily in the future, and key locks are already obsolete apparently.

yeah lets tell the whole world how to open a lock very easily in seconds without leaving a trace

Frankly, those are crappy locks. I looked at my keys, they all have a little "lip" at the end of the teeth, making a "bump key" impossible: the lip prevents the key from going any further into the lock.

Who needs bumping? Most of the people in my town have fu.cked up keys anyway. My best friend`s front door key works on my back door and my front door key works on my other friends back door.

I asked a locksmith about this, he said you used be able to do it but all new locks are made against `bumpers`...

The date at the beginning says April/05 (for those who "wonder" if it`s old, cheesh!)
And yes, I feel even less safe than ever.
But there`s nothing worth stealing in my house, really there isn`t!
Going to try it myself o:-)

""Thanks for telling everyone.""

I`d rather have everyone learn at the same time than have the burglars learn a month before I do.

keeping information secret for `security` is like being given a choice before you go into the boxing ring: both fighters are blindfolded, or neither are. Oh, and the other guy might lift his blindfold, but you`d never know about it.
