what ive been wondering recently (yes i have been bored) is, could plants ever evolve to be sentient beings who think and communicate amongst one another? and possibly us.

if they are left to their own devices and given the chance would this ever be possible. i mean look at this plant... thats gotta be the first step right? self preservation. and look at the venus fly trap, damn thats one freaky weed.

    please discuss, thank you.

I want one, and yeah that`s an interesting idea MrEman, but the main focus of life is staying alive (as a species) and trees are doing a pretty good job, along with most plants. Humans would never give them the chance to evolve anyway. The earth will probably be destroyed by us in another thousand years. Or at least I think so. I also believe that humans are the most inferior race, because we can`t live off of pure instinct. So... yeah I seriously doubt that plants will ever be able to communicate. That is, if they don`t already.

To MrEman, I think plants have always had self preservation, in a variety of forms...their aromas to aromas, or stenches to attract a variety of bugs either for reproduction or feeding....spiked leaves for protection...but this does certainly seem like a bigger step in that direction...

I think after millions of years of evolution it could be possible?

I mean we evolved a lot from what we used to be :P

`What will happen to the vegetarians when carrots start to cry?` - great stuff!

ok, let me expand... if somewhere in the universe there is a planet like our own, minus the parasitic existence of humans... would plants evolve to our `level`?

Those are all over down here (Southern Texas). They curl up if you touch them. It feels weird to hold your finger on them as they sort of wrap around it (even though the leaves are not long).

In response to MrEman and Lockee. You misunderstand evolution, if these plants were left to their own devices and not bothered in the slightest, they would not evolve into a self aware organism, in fact, they would not evolve at all. Evolution is triggered only when it`s neccessary for an organism to adapt to a condition, such as a predatory bug or a climate change. With no external stimulus, evolution would not occur. However, if they continue on this path, it may be entirely possible for them to develop some form of higher conscienceness.

Secondly, human beings are not the lowest life form, there is no such thing as a lower or higher life form, all life is at the same level of importance to the world for one reason or another. Humans are not a parasitic organism either, humans simply destroy things, something parasites don`t do as it would be against their best interest.

CAN`T WE GO ONE SINGLE THREAD WITHOUT SOMEONE MENTIONING THE STUPID P WORD? Damn, it`s really annoying. I don`t think anyone would care if it`s photo-edited or not. As long as it cures their boredom SO STOP YELLING THE STUPID THING!

    Anyway, about the plant...

I wish I had one near me! I would mess with them for hours on end! Eventually, I would stop messing with it and find myself back on IAB yelling at annoying people who won`t stop mentioning Adobe`s really famous photo-editing program.
