Someone brilliant thought up an airport next to a beach.
He was joking, you hormone-infested teen.
is this proof enough?
The reason why it is on the beach is because that is the best and most strategic place for a military base. Much of the rest of the island is hilly and mountainous. The airport, along with other parts of the island such as Ft. Louis, were previously military bases for the French, Dutch, Spanish and Americans. Until phase 2 is complete, visitors have to take stairs down and walk on the tarmac to the arrival gate.Read more about the airport-www.pjiae.com.
I know all of this because not only have I been there many times but my family has also lived on the island for many generations. This spot is a big tourist attraction...you all should see i
Its the only place on the island for the airport. On the side of the island where the airport is, the land between the lagoon and the ocean is really thin. The other side of the island is all mountains.
and potentially dangerous.
Not really. This happens on small islands where airports have to be near the edge for the runway to be long enough.
Also, for those asking why they don`t come in from the other way, there are tall mountains on the other side of the lagoon. When you take off from St. Martin the plane either banks really hard or climbs quickly to get out of the way.
Its actually really fun to watch. I sat there for a few hours on my vacation a couple of years ago.
BADASS TO SEE A PLANE LAND REALLY CLOSE UP
You can`t see in this shrunken pic, but there`s a dent in the top of the fence, implying a REALLY close landing occurred once...
Shut the hell up, it`s in the Netherlands Antilles. and it`s old news.
