Baphomet73, pornography (a.k.a. providing males with means of sexual arousal\gratification) has always been exploitable and very lucrative, not unlike prostitution. And if that`s your point then I cannot disagree with it. But is porn solely responsible for making the internet popular? No one can say - not you nor I nor Al Gore nor anyone. But I will say this: the advantages of instant global communication, distance purchasing and shipping, and easy distribution of information\advertising, all rolled up into one and accessible through any phoneline and computer (in effect replacing the phone) pretty much sell themselves, don`t you agree? Especially when the closest we had to that previously was post mail. Your point makes sense but it`s redundant.

Did not know those facts, Baphomet. Would it be too much trouble to ask for some sources? No worries if you don`t have any, just can`t really trust people on teh internetz to always tell the truth. ;-)

web traffic.
5. Entrepeneurs like Danni Ashe saw the business opporunities in the internet, and took advantage of it. She has made millions with her website, and she has been around pretty much since the beginning. I`m sure there are a bazillion other people like her making money from the dirty stuff.

There, I hope that made sense. Whew.

Okay, let`s see if I can explain my theory a little bit:
1. According to a Forrester Research report in 1998, internet porn accounted for around $750,000,000 to $1,000,000,000 dollars yearly (although this number may be slightly skewed).
2. Adult entertainment sites were some of the first internet sites to experiment with pay-per-view and monthly fees for their customers on the web. The implications of this should be pretty obvious. How many non-porn sites out there today charge their customers for usage?
3. The internet oversight body is planning on using an ".xxx" instead of a ".com" for adult sites. I can only assume this to mean there are too many porn sites for the commitee to keep track of, and they need a way to weed out the adult content from more standard .com fare.
4. Why pay for porn when you can, for the most part, get it for free on the internet? This has been the case since the beginning of public internet usage, and it obviously means more

Ah, Overmann, we can always count on you to have some good arguments. And unusually fact-based as well. Brava. As it is? This is a highly amused debate to get into with people. Especially ones with no data to back their positions. Must remember to tell my boyfriend that I`m a prude. Hehe. Amusement all around. And now? It`s time for some Terry Pratchett. Adieu!

"When a female is portrayed as enjoying violent sex, even unprovoked men become more aggressive and more accepting of violence against women." (Unprovoked men, in this instance, referring to those men who previously felt no aggression towards women.)

"The combination of interest in violent pornography and negative attitudes toward women is a strong predictor of self-reported sexual aggression in the past and sexually aggressive intentions for the future." (`Sexually aggressive intentions` sounds a lot like contemplating rape. For those wondering why Vindicate brought up the subject of rape, viola - there it is.)

I can`t say I`m completely neutral or impartial on the subject of porn. Being male and therefore biologically-endowed with the burden of initiating intercourse, my need (any male`s need) for arousal is exceedingly high. However, I detest violent porn and sympathize completely with those seeking to abolish it.

Alright. I looked up pornography in my Social Psychology book and if it`s good enough for psychology, it`s good enough for me. Here are some bullet-point research notes on the subject:

"Nonviolent pornography that is only mildly arousing reduces retalitory aggression against someone of the same sex." (Guys watching nonviolent porn will feel a kinship with other guys, is what I read.)

"When normative restraints against male-to-female aggression are reduced, nonviolent but arousing pornography increases male-to-female aggression more than male-to-male aggression." (When put in a position to aggress towards a female and given an option to do so, men who watch nonviolent but arousing porn are more likely to aggress.)

"Violent pornography increases male-to-female aggression more than male-to-male aggression." (Violent pornography including such things as force-fed fellatio, physical hitting [slapping], and otherwise what would distress the female.)

And Baphomet - I`m confused what you mean. I don`t attribute the internet`s popularity to porn. Perhaps you could help give me some examples? Maybe make some correlations? Cite some sources? But frankly, I don`t see how porn made the internet popular (especially since not everyone looks at porn on the internet, much less looks at porn).

I`d like some facts from both sides. I need more arsenal, lol. From what I`ve experienced personally and from what those around me have experienced in personal relationships, porn has done nothing but hurt the viewers and the other person in the relationship. Hence I already have a pretty strong opinion against it (who likes what hurts them... aside from masochists of course). Additional data backing up my opinion is always a good thing. But I`m usually open to a well-structured, viable (aka, not ad hominem/entirely opinion) opposing side. So throw data at me. I doubt you`ll change my opinion, like I doubt I`ll change yours, but it`s always healthy, and helpful, to question and reform/alter your beliefs if necessary, right? Right.

The fact is though, whether we like it or not, it is up to the individual woman to decide to participate in the making/consumption of pornography. If you want me to bring facts to the table, I`d be more than happy to do that. As a woman, a feminist, someone with strong personal feelings about pornography, and a person who`s studied sex/sexuality, I have thoroughly researched arguments on both sides of this divisive debate. I`d be more than happy to provide anyone who`s interested with more information about either or BOTH sides of the debate.

Sorry, but I am going to engage in the whole debate going on here for just a minute...

Women`s - and feminists` - views on pornography span the entire spectrum. Personally, I don`t mind a bit of good, carefully selected porn now and again - from sites/productions that I know are legal, safe, consentual, and support the values that I support in the rest of my life/choices. I do have problems with some of it, however (violent, degrading, etc...I could go on forever about what kind of porn I don`t agree with/consume because, believe me, there`s a lot more out there that meets that description than stuff I dig...).

People may hate porn, but here`s one thing nobody can deny: it made the internet what it is today. That may be bad, that may be good, but one of the reasons we are on this site blasting each other`s opinion today is because porn made the internet popular. Go figure.

So you really can`t say there`s NOTHING positive about pornography. And frankly, not every woman who is in the porn business is a bipolar freak with psychosexual\drug addiction issues. Some women enjoy sex, and they like having sex with strangers.

And as an aside - does anyone else wonder how the hell cutbullocks would ever get into law school, as his profile states, when he can`t spell or find other ways to articulate his ideas aside from swearing? I feel sorry for whichever law firm has the lapse in intelligence to hire him.

I`m interested to know how you know, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the lady was exaggerating about her husband`s addiction. Or do you think guys can`t become addicted? If you do, I pose this question - why are there rehab groups to get over porn addictions if you cannot become addicted to pornography? Seems rather... silly to put forth all the effort for something that`s just a figment of an imagination.

And I`m not a dam. You can damn me, but not dam me. I`m afraid I wouldn`t be a very effective dam. Nor would I be a very effective prude. Especially since I have idea what society`s idea of propriety is now. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/p...
Did you mean to use another word? Because prude says nothing about sex anywhere. And porn, to my knowledge, has not been touched upon by society insofar as propriety and decorum goes.

Sorry, but you lose at life.

Cutbullocks -

I have a life, and quite a happy and fulfilling one at that. From your lack of intelligence and just general pathetic ramblings, I can conclude that you either don`t have a life, or it`s really depressing.

I didn`t find the sob stories (story`s would imply that the story has possession of something else), I found the link. So blame the author of the webpage for finding the links.

1 - Not all do it for the cash. Some do it because they are forced, others do it because they`re addicted to something, others do it because it perpetuates the cycle of abuse, and very few do it because they like it.
2 - Not all are loaded. Most of them are addicted to something, thus the money goes to drugs, alcohol, etc.
3 - Only about 10% (and that`s being generous) are happy. The other 90%? Definitely NOT happy.

shut the drat up vindicate, go get a life.

you just found a bunch of sob story`s online and displayed them as facts and whatnot.

they do it for the cash, ther loaded, ther happy.

and when that lady said her husband was addicted to porn, she was obviousley exadurating.

dam u vindicate.... effin prude stomping her retarded ideals onto us

Because she doesn`t find porn an appropriate way for someone to get their kicks, most certainly does not make her a prude. However it does make you an idiot for saying so. Whether you like it or believe it or not, porn is degrading to women, and it is also highly un-healthy. But I couldn`t give a flying f..cuk about helping or even wasting my time to convince you about what it does to the mind. Just don`t spread your filthy crap about how its harmless or not addictive because chances are some smuche will believe you and then we just have one more ignorent a$$hole wasting forum space.

Know what amuses me most about the pro-porn people? If it were their mother, sister, or daughter doing it, they`d be outraged. But since it`s a stranger, it`s perfectly fine. Love the double standard there.

I made it serious because I`m tired of these stupid ideas being repeated. Porn is not necessary for someone`s life. Ever. Being addicted to porn is not normal. Being addicted to anything is not normal. Find it amusing that people get upset when people become alcoholics, workaholics, excerciseaholics, gambling addicts, etc... but a pornaholic? That`s perfectly normal.

Buh?

Oh, and benjbenj, what would qualify for a "good" link? And I notice you made no comment on Hustler and Playboy`s making light of rape. Nor did you make any comment on the personal experiences of a former stripper/escort. But if you feel the need to give me some links backing up YOUR position, feel free.

yeh i`m not impressed with her links either benjbenj.
jesus just because you don`t like it doesn`t mean others don`t, and she IS right, they`re freaking loaded. but at the cost of self respect.
so?
they don`t like it. they like the money.
they still DO it.

god.
i`m not even choosing one side or the other but i hate asses like you that change the subject to somthing serious and then go ape on everyone that disagrees.

Have a great day. Or don`t. I don`t care either way.

flourchild29 - I`m wondering if you realize it`s FLOWERchild, not flour. One you bake with, the other you plant in gardens. Porn is demeaning to everyone involved. Here`s a couple links I doubt you`ll visit:
http://www.oneangrygirl.net/pornmyths.ht...
http://www.oneangrygirl.net/wackyrape.ht...
But hey, if you want to be viewed as nothing more than a washrag and vagina/anus (depending on your tastes), that`s your lack of self-respect. Not mine.

I`m far from prudish, but I feel no need to prove it to anyone, much less over the internet. I just find prostitution a very demeaning and disgusting practice. Don`t believe me? Ask the 90% of prostitutes that don`t fit the "happy hooker" mentality and see what they think. Here, I`ll even give you another link:
