I see dead people
There is a little chappel near Sion in Switzerland that has a room full of skulls. It has something to do with a certain era and the Plaque.......... In memory of the dead "memento mori"

In Portugal we have a "Bone chapel" (capela dos ossos, google it ;)) but it`s not like this one, in ours, the walls are the bones! here`s a couple of pictures for you:

and yes, that`s a real skeleton, and it still have some of the tissues intact. It`s a legend, i can`t remember what it was, but they hang them in the wall, there`s a baby`s skeleton hanging next to that one. it`s suposedly a mother and her child.

I have an additional comment about these photos --the first one doesn`t show the Kostnice chapel where the bones are -- it shows another location in Kutna Hora -- the cathedral of St. Barbara.

This church is not in Russia. It is called Kostnice and is in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic, about an hour from Prague. The bones are all real. They are from a mixture of Crusaders and victims of the Black Plague. There is no history of earthquakes in the area. Kutna Hora is an old silver mining town. I visited the area in February 2006 and went to Kostnice, although the tour guide was creeped out by the place and refused to talk about it. He said "It is a very strange place. It is a place that is visited."

There are churches like this all over Europe. There was actually a sect of monks who had the meat boiled off their bones when they died and were then added to their church.

I have visited this church, it is in Kutna Hora in Czech Republic. The bones there were taken from cummunal burrials but were removed because of the stench, cleaned and disposed in this church as a scepulture.

BTW, this *might* all seem quite beautiful and natural to a Tibetan monk. It`s quite common for their bones to be used in the production of ritual objects after their death. They really commit to giving everything they have - even their own bodies - to the Divine.

I don`t think I`d want to see this myself, but having followed mostCLEVER`s link, well, there`s a comforting side to all this, oddly enough. Many of the 40,000 bodies with which the chapel is decorated were brought to that specific chapel by friends or family who believed that it was on sacred ground - they felt that bringing their friend or family member`s body there would ensure a place in heaven. To think of that many people having people in their lives who were willing to go what was surely a long distance for many - for that last, loving purpose - really reminds me how loving people can be.

Cremation and having your ashes spread out is so messy. But to have your bones spread all over the church wall for all to see. Now that`s the way to die.

Another thought is Im amazed at how well preserved these bones since they are from people who died in the 1500`s

Maksie99, Czechoslovakia is no longer a single country.

Beautiful, grotesquely beautiful death. I`d love to go there, and would willingly give up my bones if they decided to add another wing.
