there is no drating way that this would happen, if this happed there would be a missive war aginst the goverment, that would be riots and murders and eventually the fall of the goveremnt, because people need access to the internet one way or another.

DUUUURRRR PEOPLE! Our governments want to control us. They simply cannot have a free media exchange nor information. They cannot control what we see here. This frightens them.

"is there a form of government that says big industries run a country?"

Yes, it`s called capitalism my friend, and unfortunately, America is a capatalistic society. In our country, money talks and the big boys that own the hug-ass corporations run the deals. You want a different politian in the office? If you`ve got billions, you might be able to change that. The thing is, that yes, there are bigger problems in the world--but this internet thing is much bigger than just web use. This has to do with manipulating the information in a huge media in which many Americans (and others around the world) obtain information. If a party has enough cash, in other words, they could get you to "know" the lies they want you to know. Not to mention this is terrible for our economy.

avrillapete - how long do you think the oil WILL last, pray?

There are limited reserves of oil, it takes a very specific environment to generate oil, and it takes a long time to create the oil. In other words, we use it faster than it regenerates, like all of our resources. So yes, the oil will run out eventually.

I don`t know. But anyway, I know I`m over-reacting, but the internet is my second home. I do my reasearch on it, I play games on it, and other things that I love doing on here. I do have a strong feeling that the people that want to save the internet will win. But I`m not always right. If we do win, I will run out in the neighborhood and scream and jump and run and cry for joy. If we lose, I will die inside.

I`m thinking a major ISP (*insert Comcast, AT&T, Verizon*) started it all by saying to themselves:

"Hmm...we`re in charge of delivering all information that runs through the net. But the costs of maintaining, rebuilding and renovating this infrastructure is worrisome. Why put up with the high costs of upgrading this technology when the return isn`t worth it? We need to put some of the costs/burden on someone else. But who? The consumers? Hell no. They`ll never fall for that. It`s hard enough just trying to get $30/month from them anyways. I know, the web host companies! After all, it`s their information that we are sending to and from the consumers. They make a boat-load of cash. But how would we be able to get them to pay up? I know, get them to pay us for better service. Or we could just start everyone off with crappy service and have them pay us a lot to get the service they currently have, heheh. (continued)

This is sh|t. Granted, yes, this won`t kill the internet entirely. It`ll just take out what made the internet such an amazing thing. Does anybody with power in this country think before they act anymore? If this actually happens (I hope it doesn`t.) all the little websites I love (Like i-am-bored, roostereyed.com, fanfiction.net, fictionpress.com, etc.) will probably be gone, if they can`t afford to remain. I`m most worried about the last two sites...it`s because of these sites that my writing career is actually a possibility. Again, this is sh|t. What are they going to take away next?

@ DrewK: It`s already happened. The law to destroy Net Neutrality was already passed.

@ 7451: On average there are only 2 Internet Service Providers available to each home in the United States. What if both are doing the same thing? The fact is that even if we could switch, this is destroying our freedom as Americans.

It`s sad that the amendment to save Net Neutrality has already been discarded. Get ready to see some bad poo happen, people. Congress doesn`t care what happens.

You are electing people due to popularity and not by their intelligence. reference to people like hillary clinton and arnold schwarzeI am a racist!. Okay, WHY ARE ISSUES LIKE THIS BECOMING EVEN AN ISSUE? this stuff should be dismissed as not likely to happen!!! But it`s not! DO YOU KNOW WHY? BECAUSE THE UNITED STATES ISNT A TRUE DEMOCRACY ANYMORE NOR A REPUBLIC, IT IS GETTING CLOSER AND CLOSER TO DICTATORSHIP AND WE ARE LETTING IT HAPPEN RIGHT BEFORE OUR EYES AND NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. sorry for the caps but im sick of america taking our rights away from us. I bet in teh next 50 years we will be wiped out from the earth due to economical instability and weak military because of us not being a democracy anymore, but instead a dictatorship. Democracy is what made us a SUPERPOWER in the first place, idiots!! yes im talking to you govt. officials! i hate liberals they are slowly taking away our rights! As of right now we practically are a dictatorship and the dictator is G.W BUSH.

I`m still unclear on this- they`ll force US (the teeny user) to pay for better internet? and then, make us pay for what? wouldnt it be the same charge?

anyway, so, the internet would either make it private for some. whats the point? does that mean we cant USE the internet or just that we can only use SOME of the sites?

Also, wouldnt the economy go down. think about it, they get rid of the millions of people paying for their domain and then since most of us will probably end up hating this new internet, we`ll not pay for the connection. If it happened as I just said (probably not) wouldn`t they just end up making a lot less money?

This is just stupid. Trying to block information. So, no matter what, there will always be a way to get the information we all crave. No matter what, when people want something, we have a way of getting it!

Thats just the spin talking karfoogle. The wee people (i.e us) know that its utter hogwash..All the major companys host their own servers...they have too. The little guys cant compete with the big boys and certainly never will if this takes place. Its hard to belive a little online bookstore is leeching off Amazon for example. Its not happening no matter what they say..The only guys involved are ISPs..They know they can get more cash out of people if this happens. AOL is a prime example..Their attitude from this is "If you dont pay us money, your site will not be avalible to our subscribers".

This is annoying, I really hope this doesn`t get passed...this country truly is developing into a police state, Bush is a less charismatic Hitler. Just look at what he does, he brands an entire group of people as terrorists indirectly, then makes us fight a war on terror. Who the hell are the terrorists? Well fu(k it, we`ll make em up, oh wait...we`re the terrorists.

I`m all for the troops, but I wish they weren`t so stupid and would just all get up and pack their sh|t and leave. We are fighting an invisible enemy, in a land that hates us, that is destroying their minds and spirit. People are dying for land interests, and oil interests.

I live in America, and I am beginning to really not like it anymore.

*Continued*

Backbone routing plays a lesser role in overall packet throughput than your internet connection and the performance of the web server. In my opinion, vital network traffic should be a higher priority than teenagers gossiping about K-fed in AOL chat rooms.

** Just playing the devils advocate, don`t beat me **

Critics complain that without net neutrality, small online businesses won`t be able to afford the same service as huge sites like amazon and google. That`s like the owners of your neighborhood thrift shop whining because they can`t afford a storefront on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Actually, it`s worse, because the pricing for tiered service won`t be nearly as disparate as that. Companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo are fighting against tiered service, because they are the bandwidth hogs that will have to start paying their fair share for all the traffic they generate.
If congress allows tiered service, nobody exept the largest bandwidth users will notice a difference. The Internet backbone has tons of capacity and keeps growing.

We truly are headed the way of the Romans. Here`s to America`s collapse once they`ve pissed off one too many people.

Go here and fill out the pettition, I did. They make it easy by automatically sending a letter (if you choose to fill one out) to your Congress member. The internet is a big place, just imageine all the letters the people in congress could be getting. Every extra one helps, because the real danger is relying on others to speak up... Thats always the problem in large groups of people. Well, YOU gotta speak up or the way things are heading won`t change and we`ll lose the internet as we know it
