"wtf is it with these american *push the kids to absolute destruction* things?! These kids look dead to the world!.. Can someone explain to me why people do this? For jobs?! Dude, get a spellcheck- not some pre-teen geek to help u out with your spelling!"

my sister married an Italian and thus lives in Italy, her children are driven by the schools there to an insane degree, including hours of homework through entire evenings, and half a day Saturday.. don`t talk to me about how we push.

don`t criticize the contest...it`s the NATIONAL spelling bee, of course the words are hard. It starts in every school in the US, then goes to the regional/state tournaments, then finally end nationally. I know, cuz i did this in school. it`s a lot of pressure. I actually remember seeing the end of that bee on tv, everytime it was that kids turn, they put out a chair for him. he ended up coming in second.

This is a repost from last year. Wtf is happening to I-A-B? In any case, here is a quote from the first page:

I never fainted when I did there spelling bees but for a lot of kids I remember there was alot of pressure on them. Mostly it came from the parents wanting them to when so bad. Reminds me of parent coaches."

Something tells me that you wouldn`t ever "when" a spelling bee. I mean, against those other kids? "There" spelling ability is so much better than yours.

I`ve read the explanations given earlier, but I`m still amazed that no one even moved a finger to help him! I mean, you know, something like a athlete would get in a match or something--some doc trots out there, shows him four fingers, says, "how many fingers am I holding up?" or *something*. Oh well, I guess it`s rough in the world of competitive spelling.

As opposed to alopecia. Which means fox-mange in Latin apparently.

I find it wierd that he could spell the word perfectly after he fainted... I remember when I fainted once and it took me about 5 minutes to get myself back to normal.

Oh, and Noahcaecus, Ragin spelled "there" pefectly correctly. It was his grammar that was wrong, not his spelling. Wow, I am nitpicking today, aren`t I?

Poor kid, they do seem like they`re under a lot of pressure. At least he got back up and finished the word, without even asking for it to be repeated.

And I know I would have fainted as well. I have bad anxiety with crowds, so knowing everyone`s watching me in the audience and on tv would have killed me, lol.

oh and these kids have a MUCH larger vocabulary than any of us on here, including myself

not to mention a lot of them know like 4 languages and where the words come from and how they are used..crazy

0
Reply
Male 1,039
No they don`t know the words in advance.

Fainting can actually be a common thing at these.

Unless the person faints and is out cold they aren`t to help them up as there is plenty of room on the stage for them to collapse.

Strangly they all know this...apparently it`s caused by the whole locking your knees thing.

No I`m not a fan, I looked this up.

funny either way

Do they have to learn these words in advance? Because I`m scared if these 11-year-old kids have a larger vocabulary than I do.
