BTW-- Don`t kill, don`t steal, don`t lie, don`t covet, don`t take the lord`s name in vain (don`t say "goddammit" or swear to God), thou shalt chill and give props on Sunday, only worship YHWH, don`t bang other people unless they are your spouse (i.e. don`t be gay and do someone`s wife), ummm that`s 8, oh yeah, respect your folks, and don`t make no statues. I googled the last two :-/ I guess I didn`t know.

I`ve said it before and I`ll say it again: the Daily Show and the Colbert Report aren`t funny.

It was scripted, and even if it were the sponsor of the bill really not knowing the Ten Commandments, it`s not really funny. It`s retarded.

The congressman`s (NOT senator`s) name is Lynn Westmoreland...and though Colbert`s show is meant to be facetious, you can`t really "fake" a guy not knowing his own beliefs.
This is the height of hypocracy, and though this clip was damn funny, the underlying message is not: Our government is trying to change the US from a democracy to a theocracy!

Thank the Good Lord America has a 100% Christian population...otherwise all this pushing of one specific religion might seem a bit unfair. Some people might even try to claim it is unconstitutional.

But those people are just jealous because they`re heathens and are destined to burn in a lake of fire for all eternity.

    That`s not a commandment!

Anyway, is that guy famous in America <one being interviewed> because the whole thing had the air of a scripted skit, but then again obviously it isn`t if he is a real politician. If it`s true, I cannot believe it!! What a moron. His grammar was terrible, too - "the ten commandments is.."

Scripted? hmm.. I honestly don`t think that a congressman, who must rely on the vote of his constintuency would willingly allow himself to be victimized in a `scripted skit` like that.. that would be political death... but then again, so would it be to willingly go on Colbert`s show! lol.. Can anyone give me any negative impact of the ten commandments? As a Christian, I don`t think they should be force fed, but what harm are they? Law as we know them in the free world were based on these commandments (principles if you feel better calling them that). Stop politicizing it and read them, the ain`t all bad.

Which one of the commandments led to the holocaust? Or which one lead to 9-11? Fact is the 10 commandments are simple even if not a Christian. How does reading them or God forbid, follwoing them harm anything?

Bah. The 10 commandments are barbaric throwbacks from a time long past.

Here they are straight in their original wording: http://www.crystalinks.com/tencommandmen...

If you`re too lazy to read that, let me tell you a fun fact. You can`t make pictures of anything above the cloud ceiling. You can`t make pictures of anything below the ground. You can`t make pictures of anything in the sea. Your neighbor`s wife is his property.

Also, forcing ANY religion upon ANYONE ANYWHERE is WRONG.

    "And to ViolinGirl77:
Burn in hell. You are so f*cking ignorant of other peoples religons its UNBEARABLE. Go kill yourself, please, because people as stupid as you should not live on God`s green earth."

Chill out. She was only stating her beliefs, no matter how flawed and arrogent they were.

I judge people based on actions, not on what they believe. I wish other teenagers would do this, but sadly, most of us have some major growing up to do, including me. I`m not the perfect teenager, and I don`t claim to be.

Too bad most of you need an easy scapegoat, and religon is right there. I mean, its big, its the norm, and many people believe in many kinds of religons.

I mean, if its big and a lot of people follow it, it MUST be wrong, right? You rebels! Fight the power!

Also, I am not saying religon is right because a lot of people follow it. I am just remarking on the fact that many teenagers target large institutions to feel important and rebel.

ok prove to me that is fake kylethehappy.

relgion is ok if you force it upon a group where they all take in religion, you should have it forced upon yourself on something that belongs to government if you don`t believe in the particular relgion.

we may need to understand that killing people is bad but it`s basically told to us by society. it may be helpful to have it in the ten comandments, butagain with relgion. i don`t want to be preached something i think is better off with edjucating people who want to hear it.

I also love the colbert report and daily show becuase i can watch my news and laugh myself silly.

i understand that people have different opinions but the people who have said enough i don`t want to hear it should stop talking about the stupid fu*king 10 commandments and just deal with their relgion.

I think religion is overrated and you can debate this all you want but i couldn`t care less what you said about it because that`s my opinion.

"The Ten Commandments ARE stupid. Why the hell do people need religion to tell them what`s right and what`s wrong? Think for yourselves, sheep."

I wonder where on earth you`d get the idea that people need religion in order to "tell them what`s right and wrong."

We all know what`s right and wrong.

And before you start in what that "all Christians are stupid LOLzors!11!!," think how stupid you must seem, to believe in your own observations alone--you, the sole creator of the universe.

So, go ahead, assume that all theists are stupid.

But first alk to Cardinal Newman. Talk to Augustine. Go ahead and chat it up with Karl Barth. Don`t forget Aquinas. Or Newton. What about Michael Faraday.

Yeah, all these people are REEEEL stupid, son. You got them pegged.

"We all know what`s right and wrong."

Ignorance is bliss, isn`t that right bigoldjeffry.

The concept of "Right" and "Wrong" are not written in stone (pardon the pun), but are mere perspectives and opinions. Hence a little thing called "Diversity". You could say that killing another human being is globally accepted as "wrong". Is it? Does EVERY human being on the planet agree with what you or I may have to say on that issue? Hot topics like euthanasia, abortion, capital punishment, war, and so on, show how morals are on a grey scale and not black and white.

Anyways, the way Colbert and Stewart crop interview footage is always good for a laugh. If the man seriously didn`t know the commandments, the irony is delicious... yet pathetic and despairing.

Personally I think part of the problem with the 10 commandments is that they themselves are hypocritical. For example, God orders His followers - be they Jewish, Christian, or otherwise - not to kill, yet He Himself kills indiscrimately. The Great Flood, The Angel of Death killing first-born male children in Exodus, not to mention saying stealing and theft is wrong, and yet he allows Biblical true believers to rape and pillage at will.

Also, many of His punishments go against His own commandments. If a woman is raped and she`s not married, her attacker has to marry her because he`s defiled her. Yet if the victim is married or betrothed (engaged), both she and her attacker are to be stoned to death outside the city walls.

The 10 commandments are too open for moral debate. Sometimes it`s right to kill someone - if they themselves have killed, for example - and God permits and even commands this at one point but not at others.

Point being, religion is too contrived.

". For example, God orders His followers - be they Jewish, Christian, or otherwise - not to kill, yet He Himself kills indiscrimately. "

That`s because he`s God. He gets to do what He wants to do. You don`t. Too bad. When you`re divine, call me back.

Also, when you`ve actually read the Old Testament and not merely websites, let me know. Then we can talk. Until then, you`re a tourist whose opinion doesn`t count.

When a loved one or family member is killed, tell me that "morality is gray." This garbage about right and wrong being a matter of perspective is not only misleading; it`s evil. I suppose Hitler`s okay in your book? Chairman Mao?

I saw this when it actually was on TV, and I think that it was probably scripted. If the guy didn`t know the commandments, I doubt he would react the way he did to being asked.

"People should forget about the commandments and just follow the LAW...DUH, i mean seriously ppl its the 21rst century...GET WITH IT"

Where do you think the law we have now came from?

"without religion the world would be a much better place seeing as how more evil things are done in the name of religion than for any other reason"

I really hate this attitude. People always think of the negative things that people have done with religion. Religions themselves...or at least Christianity...doesn`t tell you to go out and kill people or whatever. PEOPLE do bad things, not religions. In the end, evil is caused by bad PEOPLE who would`ve done bad things with or without religion backing them up.

That`s what most people don`t understand. It`s generalizing an entire group of people becuase of the actions of a few. That`s like saying all Germans are Nazis, because, guess what? They aren`t!

The problem I`m saying about the 10 commandments is that not everybody follows them. The rules seem to bend for some people. For example Thou Shalt not Kill. If people of the world all took it to heart we`d live in a much nicer place. The problem is that people don`t always obey it but still believe they`re the servant of god. For example Hitler, Inquisition, Al Queada they all believe by killing you and themselves god will be granting them entry to heaven and are favored and are somehow doing the right thing.

I hope someone can understand what i`m trying to get across before you all start flaming me

Bigoldjeffry, dude I can see the point you made. Yes, of course he gets to do what he wants. That`s why he`s God. But don`t you think it`s hypocritical to tell someone something is wrong and then go ahead and do it anyway? "Oh sure, you have to go and get stoned to death because you were raped, which wasn`t your fault but you have to be punished anyway because you`re not clean any more. Excuse me, I can`t watch, I have to go and tell a guy to murder his own son in my name."

Forget the da Vinci code, Christianity is in fact based on the chronicles of a self-contradicting hypocritical God, recorded decades and sometimes centuries after the fact by people who mostly weren`t there.

    my fave commandment is

"thou shalt not covet thy neighbors wife."

    i mean, wtf???

when these were made, you didnt marry for sex or love, you married for business (i.e. combining the parents wealth)

these people obviously dont know about separation of church and state...

thats how they passed some stupid law here in WA...

saying that pharmacists could deny `morning after` pills based on moral values... had they said religious beliefs, then they wouldntve gotten it...

    but they found a loophole...

morale: dont get laid in washington and not use a condom or birthcontrol, because if you try to get the morning-after pill, you might not get it...

Wow you folks get worked up quickly, and I`m always surprised on how some focus on the minutiae. My advice is to let the little things go before you stroke out. The clip was funny for obvious reasons, and I do feel sorry for our international friends who are not aware of Colbert.

When it comes to the ten commandments... most people can probably agree that having moral edicts such as `Thou shalt not kill` and `Thou shalt not steal` are general guidelines that everyone can agree upon. The graven images and blasphemy are a little more specific to the christian faith. The source of these laws only becomes important where the separation of church and state are concerned here in the United States. Yes it`s an important part of our democracy, and yes there will always be people that want to change it. Fortunately we also have another part of our Constitution that allows for open discourse like our enlightened little forum here.
