ah dude bullpoo, i gave my old computer to my older sister because i bought a new one. The thing is, since i suck at computers i asked my cousin to remove one of the harddrives from my old comp (it had 2) and put it on my new one. He took it out but couldnt put it on my new computer so he put back on. He did something wrong becuz my old comp wouldnt turn on. So i gave it to my sister and she gave it to this guy to fix it. He couldnt fix it and now he was my old computer with my hard drive in it :(

The article was interesting, if not very surprising.

The comments were surprising though. The amount of people who posted stating the exact or similar thing happened to them. And the amount of people stating that "you had it coming because you didn`t wipe your drive before taking it in." #1, sometimes the drive isn`t functioning. #2 "wiping", deguassing, or reformatting does not erase what is there. It is simply masked by the new data that is put on it.

I guess the lesson to be learned here by some would be NEVER buy a box store warranty. If you have hardware issues and are unable to diagnose it yourself, take it to a reputable local computer repair shop. Always ask for your hard drive back. And then make swiss cheese out of it with a drill.

Ragin and Aftershock, you are both right. It`s like when someone hires and leaves a plumber (or some type of service person) alone in their house, trusting that they won`t go through their bathroom cabinet or panty drawer. Trust me on this. They ALWAYS do if they have time.

best way to completely erase your hard drive is either 1: run a magnet over the disks (a strong-ish one)
    2: nuke it.

I cant believe they only offered him a $250 gift card. They`re lucky he hasnt sued them by now. And you know he`d win. If someone can sue because their coffee is too hot then he can sue easily over this.

I hope everyone knows this but if you don`t...

Even if you reformat the data can be recovered. You could always use a strong magnet or burn it into a melted heap.

oh and AFTERSHOCK, don`t be geek hating. Without geeks, you would have a pc to repair (let alone any software)

If you would like to prove that the harddrive is damaged to the point that your info wont get taken then take a electro magnet to the drive it will wipe the plates. :)
