Very good invention.

They wont start using it until its really cheap to manufacture. The US Army although big, does not have endles funds to work with.

Your brother should not have gone to Iraq if he don`t want to die yet. War is death, you know.

if u did get shot, then it wouldnt go throuh ur leg, cuz 1.the damn armor, doh and 2. when it drags the fabric thing with it, ther`ll be more resistance so it probably wouldnt even go quarter way through. probably`ll just make a dent. but WHAT if u shot the tuff HOLDING the liquid? eh?

that was retarded, what? you WANT WAR?
i hope you go to war some day, and i hope your enemy is wearing one of those while he shots you in the name of profit.

Hm. Here I was thinking the whole idea with war is to kill the enemy. If not, why use guns at all? You could settle a dispute by flipping a coin insted. Much cheaper. Depending on the value of the coin, of course.

"why cant we all just get along?"

because it is human nature to be the best. and if that means eliminating the competition, then anything goes. or could it be because whenever we mess up in politics (which seems to be alot) we send thousands of troops to kill or be killed to stall for time so we can come up with a solution?

"Hopefully if soldiers get to wear this those idiot liberals will stop yelling about the war."

the reason us `idiot liberals` are `yelling` about `the war` isnt solely because of people getting killed. have you ever thought that maybe going into the war in the first place was a bad idea? how about the motives behind it all? are the lives of 2000 US soldiers worth paying 50 cents less per gallon?

What interests me is the 13-17 year old guys defending the war. See, that means that if the draft is enacted in 1-5 years, you`re going to be off to boot camp and then the front lines. Do you honestly want to support that possibility? I don`t, and I`m a 27-year-old woman!

Call me an "idiot liberal" if you like. I just don`t want to see people losing their lives, including you.

"i dont understand these people saying its funny to be shot in the groin and most of them are coming from guys!!! are you retarded???"

No, they mean OTHER people getting hit or shot in the groin. That IS funny. But then it makes you feel like you shouldn`t laugh at the poor soul.
I do anyway.

Looks like cool stuff, though it still will hurt like a sonofabitch to get shot.

But even normal flak vests worn by our military don`t pad the blow too well.. Getting shot in the chest still means deep painful bruises and broken ribs, especially with higher power rifle ammunition(smaller pistol ammo`s have less energy obviously, so they don`t hurt nearly as bad.)

The key difference with this armor though would be the weight and coverage.. for about the same weight as a normal flak jacket, they get whole body coverage, or coverage of the vitals at a significantly reduced weight.

This is very good, as soldiers that are less weighed down by equipment have greater stamina and increased mobility. Even if the impact was less padded, and resulted in greater amounts of bruising or broken bones, its a good trade. I`d rather wear 5 pounds of armor that kept me from dying, than 20 pounds that did the same and padded the impact spots, because you don`t get shot very often.

Wouldnt a liquid type of armor flow down to one`s feet? how do these scientists plan to keep this "amazing" armor in the spots that need protecting?

Because that would be no fun.

That looks like it has potential, but I wonder what would happen if you applied it to skin. Would you be invinceable? Probably not. Would you look like a jackass? Hell yes.

dont get your hopes up. they want total peace, but as long as humans can think for themselves there will never be real peace.
we CAN however, limit injuries and casualties. bravo, i say.

i think that the idea is very sound. think about it... ok the bullet doesnt penetrate and the fabric is "slighty heavier that regular clothing". that being said, cushioning could be added to negate any ill effects that the impact of the bullet might have on the body and still weigh less than the armor currently being used. :) and after writing all this i just noticed what ferminetd said...but why waste a post eh?

being hit in the groin is no joke..

doesnt really hurt that bad, but it makes you feel hella nauseus for about 10 minutes if you are hit hard enough...

The reason body armor stops bullets isnt because it was hard. if it was, then they would just ducttape a piece of iron to the soldier. it is because of tightly woven steel threads that are so tight that they cannot be forced apart, and are so strong that a bullet cannot break through it.

this reminded me of cornstarch+water. you get a goop that is flexible like a liquid until you poke it or something. then it becomes more solid like. that is because when you poke it, you dont give the cornstarch molecules time to move out of the way, and as such they slow down the force. and they eventually soften up, just like this armor.

If only government officials weren`t so cheap, then maybe soldiers would actually get to use that stuff.

ya that reminds me of when i was youger how i mixed cornflour with water and u can jump on top of it and it doesnt splash. its really cool.

it may stop the bullet hitting u but the force would be drating painful

before watching this, I thought "why not use the one in Batman Begins", and then after watching this I thought "why didn`t Batman use this?"
I can only see it now, the boys of Jackass, Viva La Bam and all those other reality stunt shows f-ing around with this on their show.
Just goes to show you that some people DESERVE the bullet.

The word you`re looking for is dilantant... It means to become solid when force is applied to a liquid (opposite = thixotropic) - if you`ve ever added a tiny amount of water to cornflour and stirred it- you`ll know what i mean. Damn u people! I had that idea ages ago :(

tofurkey, the bullet did not really go that far, certainly not far enough that had it been worn it would strike a vital organ or anything. This will not prevent bullet wounds but could deffinetally help prevent long term injuries and deaths.

"The bullet could go through you, just not through this fabric."

That`s exactly the point. Displacement happens anyway, and theres no way to prevent that in any body armor suit (unless you would like to wear 100 pounds of steel alloy around). True though, it does allow for more displacement than current armor, however, one could cushion the impact with some sort of light cushioning.

First of all, body armor is stiff for a very good reason. Bullets won`t go through it, but did you see how far that bullet displaced the fabric? The bullet could go through you, just not through this fabric.

Cool idea, but, once it stiffens upon getting hit, are you then stuck like that? I mean, let`s say you get hit in the leg. Do you then have one stiff leg, with no way to soften it? That might not such a good idea. I`m interested to see more on this. :-)
