this isn`t "20 years old." It`s from august 2002. headlines at the bottom mention priest geoghan being murdered in prison that afternoon... happened aug 23, 2002. and the fact that they are paying out to people means it IS applicable to Bayer today.

Can`t quite understand how the virus is still active if it`s not actually in the bloodstream. I always understood that the virus died if it was outside the body for any given time, but I`m no expert,so it could be true. If it is,Bayer should be sued until they bleed...

All the countries they sold it to are 1st world countries, dont they have their own health/quality checks? Youd think they would of sold it to some 2nd-3rd world countries. Why would you purposely infect people, not like they would of gone broke, and even if they did jesus its just money, I dont get why this isnt murder, if its real.

The drug was used in the UK about 20 years ago, and several people contracted HIV. A haemophilic father of a friend of mine had a lucky escape when he had to miss out on using the `wonder-drug`.

It`s not actually as bastard like as it seems. If you read the new york times article it clearly states that the drug is obtained from blood plasma donation that was contaminated. Bayer did not deny their products could`ve been contaminated, but monay other companies could`ve experienced the same problem. This sort of thing was alot more common in the 80`s as screening procedures were not as well checked as today and less was known about HIV etc They have changed the laws on donation scince.

Listen The_Maddog, you can`t say "so do you". That makes it sound like every American hates every other country, which is false. I`m sure Bayer executives & whatnot did their dirty work & made it seem like they could sell it somehwere else. If this is true, Bayer should be torn to pieces. I thinks it`s inhuman & cruel to sell drugs that kill people. And now for a bit of humor. That jacka$s on the left needs to shut up. It`s like he`s trying to speak to a frigin` deaf person.

No wonder we Americans are hated. Even if it is old, how could someone sleep at night knowing that they allowed this to happen. Maybe I`m being naive, but I never thought our government would be so stupid to do such a thing and infect other people overseas. Hopefully things have changed and they`ve grown 1/2 of a brain since then.

I think it is a sad day for humanity if executives like that aren`t hunted down and imprisoned/killed. What I am wondering is (1) how could they get the FDA to allow them to do that, and (2) why the government didn`t punish those executives. I`m sure the government was attempting to save face, but it`s kinda hard to save face when you just got punched in the face with the whole "you let the bastards go" thing.

I didn`t know about the whole Nazi thing with Bayer, that`s pretty disturbing if it is true.

I have to say, it is unfortunate that America`s law system can be used and abused and has enough loopholes to let these people off scott free, it is quite embmarassing. However, if you are using that as a way to generalize that all Americans are OK with it, then you are an ignorant bastard. A lot of you are saying "well why didn`t they check it in other countries?" In the 80`s it wasn`t easy to detect the AIDS virus, even in the USA.

    Okay, here is my thought.

If Bayer can "infect" the AIDS virus.. then we should have already been able to find a way to get rid of it. If there is a way to harvest it and put it in a drug, then there is a way to kill it.
I dont think that this is true, adn if it is then obviously we arent doing our part to stop the virus from spreading and we arent looking for a cure.
    Thats the obvious underlying statement.
Anyone else agree? Or did this not make any sense to anyone but me?

It was tainted blood which was used to make a product to treat hemophilia, and it apparently occured at a time before extensive testing of blood was done, specifically screening for AIDS infections. It wasn`t done maliciously, it occured at a time before the world appreciated the danger of AIDS.

Read the links, it was a blood/plasma based product, thats why the virus could survive.

The story is true, it is old, but the lawsuits are now being settled. Though it is deplorable, AIDs was greatly misunderstood at first, and it took time for science in general to come to grips with the way the virus worked.

Don`t be an idiot and think Bayer knowingly infected people with AIDS, hopping no one would notice. If that were true, BAYER wouldn`t exist today. Once they realized there were problems, they began testing all products for AIDS. It wasn`t just Bayer who didn`t fully account, at first, for the dangers of AIDS.

I`m not trying to rationalize this at all, I fu7cking hate what America has become. But if Bayer was selling this to France and other well educated countries would those countries know that there was something wrong with the drug? They purchased it anyway. I mean come on, if it has leaked to the American citizens it had to have leaked to the French goverenment and the companies who bought it.

    ^^ but thats speculation.

The one thing we do know is that Bayer knew about it and basically killed innocent people to make a buck. That in my opinion is the real issue.

This is why I am happy I do not use pharmaceuticals I`ll stick with the herbal remedies and let my body fight crap off naturally.

Honestly Clayboy, this all happened in the past, yah we can all get pissed, boycott Bayer and protest, but what will it do? Nothing. I hate to say this, but the Holocaust happened in the past and there is nothing we can do about that. Should we boycott the Germans? No, and I think a lot of people are quick to judge all Americans like that too.

Americans are so addicted to man made drugs it isn’t funny; we`re even going to Canada to get them for cheaper. Americans are made to think that they need all this fake poo when really most problems can be solved with healthy eating and exercise.

America is corrupt. So is every other country (or at least the people in power somehow are). We just make bigger as0sholes of ourselves trying to push Christianity and democratic government onto everyone. Making money is the American way, no matter the cost.

Like I was saying before, this is all in the past. I`m sure they have done plenty of research since then or France would have a bigger problem with us then they do now.

Why are they just now talking about it? They say right on the video that it happened 20 years ago, and the video is from 2002. This is supposed to have happened in 1982 when AIDS was still pretty new. Testing wasn`t great back then and most lay people didn`t even know how you got AIDS.

It also says in the lawsuit that Bayer accepted blood from high-risk groups, like intravenous drug users and homosexuals, even though it was against government policies. I understand that AIDS wasn`t well studied in the eighties, and I`m not saying that Bayer screwed up, but in case everyone doesn`t realize it by now... Bayer screwed up.
And caughtnlies, it`s kind of silly to presume that just because we can get our hands on HIV, it automatically becomes simple to treat it. HIV is a rather tricky virus. It attacks the very cells in the body that are supposed to kill it and it mutates like crazy. So, even when researchers do find treatments, they only work for a while before the virus mutates again and they have to search for another one. Rather frustrating, I`d imagine.

That`s messed up, but this is OLD news...probably claimed that they "just missed it" and that the blood had already been sold or something along those lines.

Anyone see that new stuff on how certain people are immune to aids. They`ve started researching that immunity now. Turns out it`s the same people in a liniage that was immune to the black death...very kool stuff.

It`s caused by a mutation in their blood cells that rejects the infecting viruses.

According to Wikipedia, they manufactured Zyklon B for killing Jews as part of IG Farben and also developed heroin (which they sold as a cough treatment) and mustard gas for WWI. During WWI, I believe they also shipped large quantities of a chemical (I think acetic anhydride) from the US to Germany for the puported purpose of making aspirin. However, it was used to make explosives in Germany to be used against the US and its allies. They also supported a civil war in the Congo.

According to what the attorney said in the video, it seemed to him (since he didn`t mention anyone else specifically, we`ll just assume that this is his personal opinion based on what he`s read) that the Bayer company did in fact know that they were spreading the AIDS virus through their hemophilic drug, which would, to my knowledge, have donor blood or plasma in it, which is how it would have became contaminated in the first place. This was a large reason why hemophiliacs were dying in the early 80s, but that was usually from direct blood transfusions, using blood or plasma given by donors, not usually through any medicine.

The fact that they were banned from using it in the states shows that, at the very least, the FDA knew of the harm it was causing because it was contaminated with AIDS. Even though we were still in the infancy of knowledge about AIDs, the Medical community did infact know enough about AIDS to know of problems like this and that it would be very dangerous.

This is sick and it IS true. I heard about it a while ago. Im glad I never bought Bayer before. O_O If I did, I would probably have HIV and AIDS by now. No good. :-O

Besides, France is an awesome place and dont judge places until you have been there yourself buddy. Why do you hate it so much? Rumours? One person you met online? (NOTE EVEN A FEW PEOPLE DONT REPRESENT THEIR WHOLE COUNTRIES ATTITUDE)
Get a life (even if its low) and go complain to your mommy if you want to complain about Countries. You sicken me.

    "
    Okay, here is my thought.

If Bayer can "infect" the AIDS virus.. then we should have already been able to find a way to get rid of it. If there is a way to harvest it and put it in a drug, then there is a way to kill it.
I dont think that this is true, adn if it is then obviously we arent doing our part to stop the virus from spreading and we arent looking for a cure.
    Thats the obvious underlying statement.
Anyone else agree? Or did this not make any sense to anyone but me?"

do you know how AIDS works? They didnt manufacture it, what happened is blood that was infected with AIDS got into the medicine, they didnt start with a few aids cells, grew them in a labratory, and then released it. The original infection was unintentional, but what they did with it is absolutly atrocious and an embarassment to society. thousands, perhaps millions of children dead just to make a buck.

AIDS is the symptons gained from contracting the HIV virus, and it`s very diffiuclt, if not impossible to gor HIV virus without blood. Bayer were wrong to accept high rick blood groups, but then lets face it all blood groups are a risk.

As for being able to treat HIV, we can stall it with tablets, and allow people to live a near normal life for a much longer period. However, the way America, and large european drug companies see it is that there is no money to be made in producing the tablets with alot of the cases being in poorer countries. Therefor, those of you getting annoyed with Bayer over htis, may want to ask yourselves why people are suffering with AIDS when we do know how to help slow the virus down. At the end of the day it all comes down to money and market, even with something like this.

^^ Lol. If this is real, this would be quite freaky? Anyone here ever played the game "Deus Ex". This is reminding of that, in which the government is taken over by this corporation, which manufactures this deadly virus and spreads it, and then makes billions by selling the cure that they have also made... that would, of course, be only if this report is true.

Whoops, got the question mark and the full stop the wrong way around. Sorry for the typos, people! And also that guy who said he hated France, get a life. France is an awesome country, with awesome people and culture, and I bet you haven`t even been there, have you? Btw, I am british, not french, so I am not just being patriotic or biased or anything. France rules!
