My boyfriend makes that stuff. He has a chainmail shirt like that, that he made. It was about 45 pounds when it was waist length, now that it is mid thigh I have no idea. It is fine to wear once you get used to it and it feels cool when you take it off because you feel so much lighter. He also makes gauntlets and other platemail.

Chain hauberks have a conventional use, as well, for motorcyclists. I heard of someone who made his own chain mail, and took to wearing it (along with proper leather gear) when he rode his bike.

He wiped out at some point, skidded quite some distance down the road, and only suffered "road burn" on his legs, since he only had leather protection there.

Besides, who could resist turning a few heads by wearing steel armor? :)

    AFTERSHOCK:
it`s SCA, not SGA. scadians are on the geek hierarchy chart and they usually make their own armor, some of which better than what is displayed on that site.

a lot of sca folk were employed in the making of armor for LOTR. my friend`s dad was one of them.
