You can hear the original high frequency sound here

So who can hear it and who can`t?

I can hear it, this should be interesting....

Has anyone else noticed this problem with pest scaring devices that work the same way that are on sale? A neighbour has one on their wall and the high pitched sound gets very annoying.

The guy in the article who developed the sound said an adult would still be able to hear it close up. Im guessing you sitting right next your speaker counts as being close up, try walking to the other side of the room.

The kids aren`t using the vibrate feature because the vibrate feature makes a little buzz sound everybody can hear even if you`re beyond puberty. It`s just less annoying than a ring tone. This, however, really can`t be heard by adults.

This makes sense actually....my shopping centre uses that noise and I`m the only one who can hear it, until I point it out to my friends! although I only go there during my lunch breaks at work it does put me off going into the centre. Surely driving people away is going to damage the sales, no matter who it was that was buying.

Damn adults tryin to ruin our fun.

however, this whole incident only furthers the stereotype of the "youth"

Say something profound every day, don`t respect your elders unless they respect you, rise up above anything in your way.

It took loads of pepsi max to come up with that.

ahhhh, dam that sound hurts the ears. Its like that faint buzzing you hear from your TV when its on. I said it be4 ill say it again. COMPLETLY BAN CELLPHONES FROM SCHOOL GROUNDS! dont just say you can have it as long as its turned off. thats just like asking a kid to do it. and on a side note, get rid of cellphones from people driving.

Alright, so you have a ring that your teacher can`t hear. You still have to answer the phone and bring it to you ear and talk, or you have to whip it out and start tapping away on the keys to text...I don`t think teachers are that dense.

Might be difficult to make that work as a ringtone on anything but the best phones. Phone speakers, including the ones claiming `realtones` or saying that they work as mp3 players often have very bad speakers. There is often no need for a company to make speakers that make sounds we can not hear.

At 17, I can hear it, and wow it hurts. Got my mother to listen to it, and she could hear it too, at age 40. However, she seemed to hear it differently. While to me, it was high-pitched and annoying, she described it as a sound similiar to a buzzing bee. Weird.

....so that`s why.I`m 18 and all the time when i wasin school all my years, i would enter a classroom and when ateacher would accidentally leave their television sets on, i would hear it right before entering her room and it was annoying. sounded like the ringing in your ears. i would tell the people next to me if they heard it and after concentrating they heard it. i would tell my teacher "you have your TV on. i can hear it and its getting annoying." i would tell her what it sounded like and asked them to listen and they all kept looking at me weird and would tell me "no i dont hear it." So this finally explains to me why they never heard that sound. all tv`s make that sound.if your in a quiet room with no air conditioner running and no sound, put your tv on mute and you should hear it.

My EARS! FUC|<. Ow. Both of those hurt like hell. And I`d say my speakers are a good foot and a half/two feet away. Don`t want to try it from farther away because now my ears are ringing. Time for normal music. Anyway, I`d say the kids should have their cell phones confiscated unless an emergency arises. That way they`d have to pay attention in class. But I guess learning just isn`t popular anymore.

b3nzyme, I think the guy was annoyed because people get killed in accidents when people are on their mobiles and driving. Not that I actually care but maybe take it into account.
Anyway, not to go all Matt Striker on your arses, but shouldn`t those kids be actually focusing on a future. I know they don`t have one being Welsh but still. Stupid Welsh should be out `nurturing` their sheep. Anybody from Wales who wants to say anything back I`m from Scotland so bring it. COUNTRY WAR OVER NOTHING.

If you have other electronic stuff on the sound will just blend in.

Or if your speakers already make that sound then it will be hard to pick up.

I`m 19, and I heard the sound clearly on both links. In the one with the kids laughing in the background, I heard a pulsing sound. I don`t find it nearly as irritating as others here do, though. Whenever any electronic device is on, no matter what it is, I hear a sort of ringing sound. I guess I`m just used to it.

I don`t know how much age is a factor because it seems like there are a lot of exceptions to that... i.e. older people that can hear it and young people that can`t.

I can hear it and I am 21, but my roomate who is the same age can`t hear it at all. It is the same noise that comes from the TV and other electronic equipment, only the one posted here was wayyy worse. I had to leave the room while my roomate tried to hear it. It`s the most god-awful sound I have ever heard. It gives me a headache and I feel as though my ears might bleed.

Doesn`t anyone else find the alarm incredibly discriminatory? They might as well make a spray that keeps black people away because some black people might steal something...

Not only does it keep away teenagers (a major buying demographic), costing you a lot of money, but it will also make babies start to cry, a noise that everyone can hear and no one likes. GOOD IDEA morons.

The First one is kinda quiet with kids talking in the background, but the second one is just the pure sound and it really hurts my ears >_<. I also get some really quiet clicking sound in the background if i turn it up enough on the second one, and everyone can probably hear that. But man that would definitely drive me crazy if it were played loud enough, and you cant really tell what direction its coming form if you sit still, it just hurts. I`m 18, and i can also hear the high pitched sounds TV`s make through like 5 walls. Usually my ears just tune it out though.

Ok I`m 27 going on 28 and I tried again to listen to it through my regular speaker at work and heard nothing. Then I tried to hear it through my IPod speakers. With the tv on mute and the air conditioner running right behind me, I WAS able to hear it. Not as loud as a 17 year old, but I did hear it as well as my husband. Then I took th headphones out of the laptop and played again. Once I knew what sound I was looking for, I was able to hear it.

My husband insisted our cats could hear it but they didn`t even flinch when I played it out loud. But I can say if I was able to hear it at the full volume, it would drive me nuts!!
