what a load of rubbish yes trees/plants breath carbon dioxide, but what are we cutting down everyday on a massive scale? dont get me wrong im not a member of green peace or anything like that, but this is all a bluff to miss lead people so BUSH doesnt have to do anything about the GREEN HOUSE GAS MATTER, research it, the planet used to be 10% co2 tempretures were at like 122F all the time, until trees grew, reducing the co2, now co2 down to less than 1%, but were producing more and more green house gases and cutting down more and more trees, wheres it all going to end?? This is funny, it`s not that CO2 is bad, it`s what happens in the upper atmosphere, CFC`s are harmless until they reach the upper atmosphere, then they get radiated, then radicals form in the molecule and destroy the ozone.

I guess they forgot to include that.

I suppose that the fact that our sun has been shining more brightly in the last 60 years than it has in the previous 1000 doesn`t have anything to do with it. What`s more, I guess we`re responsible for the global warming taking place on Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Enceladus, Triton and Pluto. We should really shut down our refineries on these planets before it`s too late.

This is all rubbish anyway. Green house gasses also consist of Methane (mostly from cows), and Carbon MONoxide, thats just CO. This is the gas from cars, which of course cannot be breathed by trees. What a waste of time making such a movie!!!

No i`m not acting like hurricanes didn`t happen before cars. Actually. My point being that hurricanes get energy from the sea. The warmer the global atmosphere, the more energy hurricanes get. The more energy hurricanes get, the worse they are. If anyone thinks that cars, amongst other things, are not making the temperature of the world increase, then they are the idiot.

And what was the point in copy/pasting those figures about gas percentages?

Typical American arrogance of minimizing the threat to a negligible level to justify inaction. The world *is* heating up, fools, and if we don`t find some alternative source of energy (which, by the way, we have to anyway because in one hundred or so years the oil fields will dry up), our coastlines will begin to recede and entire coastal cities will drown. Ask any damn geology instructor and he`ll say the same thing provided he isn`t some hapless puppet.

"If anyone thinks that cars, amongst other things, are not making the temperature of the world increase, then they are the idiot."

Okay, let`s just clear up a few things.
Yes, the amount of carbon dioxide is bigger now than before. HOWEVER: The fact that it creates the global warming has not been proven. Don`t go around calling people who are sceptical to mass hysteria and doomsday profecies idiots.

And the thing she said about the poles, it`s actually true, as the temperature increases the polar caps actually increase in ice size. The water level will still rise though, when the earth gets hotter, because of the fact that warm water has less density than cold water. This is all irrelevant though, because soon, oil will be increasingly rare, and the oil prizes will get higher than other alternatives.

Still think the movie was bull though.

Okay, I`ll try the `calm voice of skeptical reason` bit again. Does anyone but me find it rather damning that this warming trend they`re all talking about coincides with increased energy output from the sun? And that it`s taking place on planets and moons all over the solar system at the same time?

Also, has anyone here done any research into this whatsoever, or are you parroting what you`ve been told by others?

Hansbo, yeah you`re right about the ice caps increasing in size, but that is only to a point. as the temperature rises there is more moisture in the air which is released as snow, building up the ice caps. past a certain point the ice caps will eventually begin to melt. and then the effect of the diluted (no salt in the ice caps) water will have on the gulf stream i`m not all certain on, other than it is not good.
it was an entertaning movie though

The whole global warming thing is a bunch of crap.It is a natural occurance, the earth changes on its own.Humans need to be alot less arrogant and stop thinking there is anything we do or can do to effect this either way.The earth has gone through many many changes over millions of years, before cars and humans were here.Mother nature and the universe do not revolve around humans,we are a tiny fly speck in all of this.

Larian, I defer judgment to the USGS and the scientists actually monitoring the effects of global warming (rising sea levels, rising temperatures, regressive glaciers). There`s no question Earth is heating up; rather, the debate is how large a part do humans play in the matter. It`s obvious to me that we aren`t treating the environment well enough and that, perhaps, if there weren`t so many cars or oil refineries in the world, Earth would be a healthier place than it currently is.

Overmann, I agree with you that dumping toxic waste into the water supply isn`t such a great idea. However, the scientists that you speak of tend to contradict themselves on this matter. And what`s more, there have been more than a few retractions of previous "Chicken Little" claims in scientific journals lately.

You said "perhaps, if there weren`t so many cars or oil refineries in the world, Earth would be a healthier place than it currently is". That`s what is known as a begged question. Nobody with a working brain can disagree, but I`m not so sure about the conclusions drawn from the logic.

I think that it is imperitive that we end our dependance on oil because it`d be nice to get our energy from a place that isn`t so politically volatile. Think about it, anywhere there`s water, there`s fuel. That`s worth the price of admission right there.

Just don`t go around scaring people with the "It`s all your fault" rhetoric is all I ask.

It is a fact that carbon dioxide levels have nearly doubled since the industrial revolution. And carbon dioxide does increase thats why venuses surface temperature is about 300 Kelvin hotter than mercurys. CO2 absorbs infra red radiation given off by the earth and re-emits it back down to earth causing it to be hotter than it would be without CO2. Obviously more carbon dioxide means more radiation is absorbed and re-emited back to earth. We need a small amount otherwise the the average earth temperature would be about -12 degrees celcius but there is more now than there has been for a long time (at least 400 000 years). This has caused a rise in temperature of about half a degree so far but it will probably continue to grow as temperatures adjust to the huge increase. Since CO2 has a very long half life in the atmosphere the damage has probably already been done all we can do now is try and limit it.

Then someone makes this crap and leads us to an even quicker demise. At this rate, I wouldn`t be surprised if we are the generation that becomes exctinct.

It`s interesting, how Europeans and the like always have an opinion about how much America sucks and how stupid we all are. Get this- as fellow human beings, you are no more intelligent than we are, we`re just the nation that got stuck with one or two retards who were lucky enough to hit it big, and thus our rulers are idiots so our nation sucks. It could happen to you aswell.

On a different note, a noob is not a newbie. A newbie is a new person, a noob could be someone who was with an online organization from the beginning but just acts generously obnoxious and stupid.

And the people who made this video are stupid, what with their greenhouse gases are good lies.

Why not bash America this instance, MKnives? America is by far the biggest consumer of fossil fuels and by far the most liberal in its deregulation of oil companies and lack of any kind of national or even local energy conservation. Some criticism of one`s own country can also be perceived as patriotic.

The problem with CO2 emissions is not only an American problem - of course not. If we look to our East China and partly India are increasing their emissions drastically expecting to double their oil consumption in about 20 years. This will counterbalance the Kyoto protocol a great deal and we will probably not see a decrease in global gross CO2 emissions in near future. American energy politics as an important factor should not be underrated, since the daily oil consumption is more than three times larger as China`s is at the present and about 1/4th of the global consumption. So a lot stands and falls with the American energy politics, also taken under the consideration that the American political influence around the World, if a more environmentally aware president would appear, could put more pressure on smaller countries to cut down their air pollution.
The truth is that we are not sure what can be done about the global warning and what is the most effective. (continues...)

That does not mean, however, that we should sit back and relax. Science has for many years connected CO2-emissions (both natural an cultural) and global warming and it is now a scientific fact. We should try in any means possible to reduce the harms done and America plays a big role in this.
Therefore, Ggrrant, I think it is very arrogant of you to make that kind of accusation. This should not be changed into a banal "you`re stupid and grumpy and we`re victims" discussion. Please save that for another day...

ggrraant: you are wise beyond your years. Usually I have to use that argument on fellow Americans that think we are intrinsicly better than everybody else because we are the most well off, the most powerful, etc.... but it is equally true the way you used it as well. Our particular culture of disposable consumption is, however, kind of uniquely American in a bad way, imo.. We did at one point have a culture of hard work ethics and entrepreneur spirit, but I think that it is slowly being replaced by one of entitlement instead.

ok...i think it`s BS...let`s take the planet venus for example...greenhouse gas has completely suffocated the planet, mostly because of the build up of carbon gases...it is thought that due to this "green house" effect earth will follow the same path, and will continue to warm up due to this...
ok and i`ve heard somewhere that argentina has pulled off a big f u ck y o u to foreign oil from the middle east. mostly because they use ETHANOL-driven cars...very environmentally friendly and CHEAPER. bush`s little buddies and himself are apparently against these ethanol driven cars (which are not any more or any less expensive than the oil driven ones)...
i wonder WHY they are against this? maybe because they have billions of dollars in oil stock ...HMMMMM

ok done rant...and totally off topic lol

First, kill all of the cows, they are the biggest methane producers. Then kill all of the politicians, they are the biggest producers of hot air. I cant believe they refuse to acknowledge that burning a LOT of fossil fuels, (and nuclear explosions, and God knows what else) has little or no effect on the atmosphere. This is what happens when your constituents are fossil fuel companies.

in the 1800s, here in the states.. there was a mining company in Montana, who told all the public that the Sulfuric Acid they were pumping into the air was good for their skin.. the disasters they caused are legendary..

Larian, I`ll read your article, but I must say it troubles me that you subscribe to, as your sources of information, websites calling the opposing side "completely full of sh*t" and to "Shut the f**k up. You`re an idiot." How opinionated and self-righteous is that?

Okay. Perhaps you misunderstood or misinterpreted something I said but I am certainly not an "environmental eco-fanatic" and your referring this particular website to me is offensive. Never have I said humans are *solely* responsible for climate change, as to think so would be no less than absurd.

I suggest you find more reputable and less vulgar websites as back-up sources for information in the future lest you further insult the intelligences of your opponents.

Larian.. I had a brillian Chemistry professor in my undergrad days who drew on the board the chemical reactions that could cause the whole greenhouse effect.. He was a brilliant, educated Doctor of Chemistry.. and I don`t recall him saying F*ck or Sh*t thru the whole lecture.. you dumbass!

"This is funny, it`s not that CO2 is bad, it`s what happens in the upper atmosphere, CFC`s are harmless until they reach the upper atmosphere, then they get radiated, then radicals form in the molecule and destroy the ozone."

You sir are the biggest bull pooter in the business.

    I made this account JUST so i could rip you;

CFCs, or ChloroFluoroCarbons are made up of Chlorine, Fluorine and Carbon ONLY. What you say about free radicals is true, but the big fact that you (as you put it) `forgot to include` is that carbon DIOXIDE contains OXYGEN and thus is not a chlorofluorocarbon, and has no detrimental effect to the atmosphere at all.

CO2 levels are around 0.03% nowadays, and the natural flux in levels are not a problem at all.

    Next:
Carbon MONoxide, thats just CO. This is the gas from cars, which of course cannot be breathed by trees. What a waste of time making such a movie!!!

Ever heard of a catalytic converter? its job is to turn CO into CO2. you retards. It

ALSO, those of you that think chemicals must be similar if they look similar are clearly mistaken - take H20, hydrogen dioxide or water, and compare it with H2O2, hydrogen peroxide, or bleach.

CO2 and CO are about as different as that.

like i said before - this isnt even A-Level standard guys..

Whoever believes in global warming is stupid. Global warming IS NOT real. There are different climates for different places. People say glaciers are melting. They`ve been melting for so many years already. And some are getting BIGGER. They say sea levels are rising due to global warming. They HAVE been rising since the last 6,000 YEARS. And it`s not going any faster. CO2. Have you heard of the urban island heat affect? Research your topic instead of believing in global warming. Read "State of Fear" by Michael Critchton. READ SOURCES.

KingCourtney, I understand where you`re coming from and why you would think that, but by no means did I intend to sound arrogant. I am aware that generally, the American populace is filled with people always trying to find an easier way to do something, thus resulting in our great consumption of gas. I was merely stating that if perchance Europe got stuck with as many retards in charge that we have that your situation would be similar. Other than that though, I agree that we aren`t victims but rather instead instigators of problems and I had no intention to turn this conversation into such a debate.

thunderwolf3, I freely admit I haven`t read the book you recommended, but perhaps you can tell me how a work of fiction provides sound scientific evidence either supporting or refuting global warming?

And tell me you`re not seriously suggesting no one in this comments thread has read sources on global warming or has anything to back up their opinions absent mere belief? Science is contradicting itself (which I`ve absolutely no problem with) on this matter, which is to say that there is evidence supporting your point... as well as mine.

I think in both ways we are ok. If there is global warming and we are goign to die from it... good ridance of environmentalist a#@holes.
If there is not, we are still alive! Little Ice age and temperature fluctuation has been there for thousands of years. This all politics anyway and most people buy that environmentalist poo. I say use your car while we have some oil and breath heavily so tree can have some carbon dioxide.

wow, people stop saying "the carbon dioxide levels heve done this" or anything like that.
the carbon dioxide levels havent changed nearly noticably enough since we were able to measure it.
someone mentioned the carbon dioxide levels during the industrial revolution, some have mentioned since the beggining of time. untill you get me a time machine, theres ABSOLUTELY no way of knowing what happened in the past, or how conditions were in the past. sure theres "fossils" and rock formations and that crap, but theres no way of finding out air percentages/ temperatures from the past without measuring it in that time period.

Egh... Even if it were true I rather live in fear of global warming so I maintain my good environmental practices. :-/
