I guessed that was what he was doing. Very clever though. His explaining of it in the end got a tad confusing.

I saw that a mile away, I`d be surprised if the other players truly didn`t catch on to that...I bet they did.

Still, pretty amazing he can remember those moves.

I am still mad at the Brits for getting rid of the only Bond besides Connery that was cool. Oh yeah , the trick was sweet, simple solution to a complex situation, Harry Anderson did this in 1983 for a 20,000 bet and won, only he used 10 instead of 9, to insure the outcome.

So, did he have four players play white and four players play black, excluding the ninth player who played whichever? Or was it the choice of the players to pick their color?

This reminds me of the time I beat a math\physics\nuclear engineering student at chess. How grand that was, turning the tables after he had me on the run for some time.

I thought the trick was predictable but didn`t see how he beat the 9th player if he is supposed to be crap at chess...maybe there was a microphone hidden somewhere anyway.

I had guessed his trick before he even revealed it. I figured he would just remember the moves and use them against other members, and vise versa. With an odd number, though, he really does gamble with losing to that 9th player. I`m guessing he`s at least pretty decent at chess, but he`s got a great memory.

I want to know how he came up with that number at the end.

whoo! derren rules! and sure it was easy enough to guess he was just remembering moves but that in itself is difficult enough, to remember upto 8 moves in the correct order.. i know i couldn`t do it.

I found out the 9th player has a rating of 2200, which is really very, very would be impossible even for a `good` player to win that game (a good player has a rating of 1500-1800). Assuming Derren would not take any chances on losing, it has to be a trick.

all of the players were really good, but the 9th player was the one that was the worst of the people in that room (which still places him 9th in the UK)

Yes the 9th player is the worst in the room, but nowhere near 9th place in the UK, he doesn`t even make the top 100 list in the UK.Still there`s no way Derren could beat him in a fair game.

"Mark Howitt of Huddersfield, UK, writes: "After talking with Jon Levitt on the server I have a few things to add to your news item. Jon was quite convinced the whole thing was a hoax; he believed that someone was even telling Derren the moves in the ninth game. Just to clarify the status of the ninth board, he`s a player of 2200 strength. The title `President of King`s College Chess Club` refers to him being the figurehead of a University in London, which is one of the strongest in Britain."

"There`s also a reason, perhaps, for Mr Brown being able to predict the number of pieces remaining on the board at the end of the game. Apparently during a retake, there as a shout and a noise and the players view of Graham Lee, the holder of the envelope was blocked. There could have been a switch made at this time. However, there still remains the puzzle that Mr Lee was convinced that the envelope had remained in his pocket the whole time, and he is regarded as an honest man in England."

i just dont get it. if he just mirrors the moves, then what if like the other player killed a pawn that he was supposed to move the next time? i dont think that any two players think exactly alike. but that was awesome. totally.

maples--he is playing the same game from both sides. He`s making them play each other. No move is unpredicted, since they are exactly the same game. He played them against each other.

DTMan his shows called Derren Brown Mind Tricks or Derren Brown Tricks of the Mind or something like that.
In it he plays mind games with people from the public and is absolutely awesome!!!
BTW some of the tricks he uses are trully psychological and really do make people think things.
