The tobacco industry didn`t need to manipulate me, I did it all by myself, and regret it, all by myself. I think everyone knows that smoking is bad for you, and that chances are high you`ll get sick from it. The number of smokers has continually declined, and that shows you something.

1.) Either kids have smartened up and decided smoking isn`t cool.
2.) Declining numbers are a result of smokers dying off, and nobody is there to replace them.

I`m planning to quit soon, it`s a habit I hate.

The only time I can`t stand smokers is at work when I ask them to politely go to our smoking area (at this theme park there are designated smoking areas so that the majority of the park is smoke-free for the GKTW and MAWF kids) and they blow it in my face. The majority politely apologize and go on their way, but the intollerence of others makes me sick. Oh, and we can`t force you to go to the smoking area, but park employees will bug you all day...

As much as I hate cigarette smoke (pure tobacco smoke doesn`t bother me, and smells pretty damn good, I say.) I just can`t bring myself to agree with these kids. They want to stop the tobacco inudstry from advertising at all? What the hell? They want to remove all references to smoking of any kind in film? Excuse me, isn`t that Fascism?
Here`s a better idea- Instead of just beating your head against a wall with this non smoking thing, try this.
Raw tobacco has none of the poisons and less than a tenth of the carcinigens that cigarettes do. Encourage people to roll their own, or smoke a pipe. Don`t try and tell the tobacco industry to stop all together, because believe me, they`ll win. Freedom of speach and all. They don`t even need a good lawyer! Just some idiot who can say three words.

Groups like this really piss me off. First they take qutoes that are 30 years old and try to make them sould like they just came out od someones mouth. Then make it seem like the tobacco companys are some big evil monster who only goal is to kill you, then get your kids smoking. Big tobacco is just another company in the world who goal it is, to make money, just lik eeveryone else. So they make a dangerous product, but unless you live in a cave you already know the dangers. It`s time for people to take a little personal responsibility and accept the fact that if they choose to smoke, it`s your choice and no one else`s. it`s just like those damn truth ads, they actually make me wanna go smoke just to spite those self involved draters

It says it`s a group of teens, but the terms and conditions says it`s the NY Dept. of Health. That`s just dishonest. Why do they have to lie to kids about who they are? They are no better than the cigarette companies.

Where are the websites decrying cars, rap music and fast food? All of those things are killers too, but apparently still socially accepted enough not to be an `issue`. Hell, poor dental hygiene is a leading cause of heart disease, even more so than smoking (in some parts of Canada, at least, not sure about other places), but I don`t see any sites touting the importance of flossing.

"smokers make me sick there is nothing i hate mote than someone walking in front of you smoking"

Really? I would think child molesters and rapists, neonazis and spouse-beaters are far more hate-worthy than some dude suckin` on a smoke.

Sabre- thats the most pretentious load of bullcrap that I`ve ever heard. "I don`t like it." Is easy enough to say.

There`s that one `truth` add about the company spending so much money telling people about their donations to charity. That was Phillip Morris, and everybody knew when the ad campeign was going on that Phillip Morris was evil. If you didn`t your an idiot. Everybody knew right then, that phillip morris was spending way more on marketing then on charity. And ya know what, we didn`t give a damn THEN! Let alone now when you`re afraid to say the name.

    Even this slays me.

No group, no matter how well designed or intended will EVER stop people from making their own choices. Not the church, not the gov`t or any of their affiliates, not volunteer groups or anything else.

You want to be immune to big tobacco`s ` continuous and apparently insidious advertising? Grow a backbone and stop relying on stupid groups to help keep you safe from yourself.

There is absolutly no way that this site was done by a group of teens. Its professionally done- somebody paid a company a lot of money to design this website for them.

I know they were trying to scare me with a lot of the `facts` they gave, but the bit about how much money they were spending just made me feel special.

ok. Maybe it`s the paranoia I aquired in my pot smoking days, but hear me out:

Cigarrettes have vitrually no tv coverage, aside from someone smoking in a show or something. So what if they have a part in these anti-smoking ads? Sure, they name off all the downsides of smoking (So did dare, but how many kids stayed away from drugs because of that?), but it`s coverage none the less.

not a direct analogy but, somewhat like when news gets out about some new controversal book that`s making everyone upset. More people go out to buy it despite the fact that it`s getting bad attention. Again, not a direct analogy, just an example.

You know what? I`m a smoker. I`ve been smoking since I was 15. I knew when I started it was bad. Did that stop me? No. Was it the advertisements? No. Did I see a Marlboro ad and think "Oh yeah! Smoking is awesome! I should start!" No. I started because I was curious. Many of my family members smoked/smoke as well as my friends. It was MY STUPID DECISION. I`m not going to forego my personal responsibility and blame the tobacco companies. I chose this. I`ll deal with the consequences. These anti-smoking campaigns don`t make me want to quit. They make me want to slap people for assuming that it`s lack of education that led us smokers to start in the firt place. Sorry...no.

Why aren`t people trying to stop the alcohol companies? They advertise EVERYWHERE. Alcohol causes just as many deaths as cigarettes. Alcohol is also responsible for more teen deaths then cigarettes.

Tobacco will never go away. The government makes so much money off the taxes they put on cigarettes.

"Alcohol is also responsible for more teen deaths then cigarettes."

Teens who start smoke generally die later, not in their teens.

Its asll about the peer pressure and appearing older really. Alot of my friends deny its because of peer pressure, but why did they start when they had just made new friends? Why do my "i`m a social smoker" friends only smoke around the "cool" people? I just don`t want to start something I`ll spend the rest of my life regretting.

Banning all smoking in the movies- thats unnecessary censorship.

"smoking is suicidal and indicates a suicidal mental state, either consciously or subconsciously"

So speeding, driving without seatbelts, skydiving, drinking booze and doin` it bareback are also suicidal, according to bobbyo`s logic. Perhaps everyone of us is actually in a subconcious suicidal state. If you overeat or gamble your rent money or do a tab of E, you must be suicidal!

Of course, bobbyo would have a hard time getting a definition of a `subconcious suicidal state`, seeing as suicide, by definition, must be a concious decision. One cannot accidentally commit suicide, although the manner of death may still be self-inflicted. There is a difference between suicide and a self-inflicted fatality- it requires INTENT.

But of course, I`m a smoker so I`m just a pathetic loser and an ignorant fool, right?

youth - The point I`m trying to make is if someone is going to try and hold tobacco companies responsible for the deaths of smokers then they should also hold the alcohol companies responsible for deaths that are caused by alcohol.

Bobbyo - You have some twisted logic, son. Do you drink beverages with caffeine? Eat fatty foods? Drive a car? Then by your logic you`re suicidal. STFU and mind your own business. If someone wants to smoke why does it matter to you? No one is asking for your approval. Just roll on and live your life.

Sure, you`re not going to just look at a smoking ad and take up smoking. Duh.

IF you want to discuss important issuse such as "fast food" make your own damn website.
So what, there can be only websites about issues that you think are important? Teens shouldn`t smoke, and I don`t think anyone should not be trying to stop teens from smoking.
Teens will always make their own decisions.

Err, because all of those, if used responsibly, usually don`t cause deaths that easily. Most people who light up a cigarette for the first time get addicted. Not all, but most. Most people don`t get killed everytime they get in a car. Most people don`t get killed when they listen to rap music. Most people don`t get killed if they eat a french fry.

If smokers are also pathetic and ignorant fools, why do you care if they are suicidal, it would help the advancement of the human race. Maybe anyone who is an ignorant fool should be locked up, but then THAT`S rediculous.
" wanna kick my ass? Try and catch me fool. oh I forgot..wheeze wheeze..youre a pathetic fool who can`t run too much before you start coughing."
I actually found that funny. I`m a smoker and I play american football for my uni, I play both ways as it happens. I may not be fast, but I am quite fit. And, as it happens, I met a smoker the other day who had just done a marathon. Smoking doesn`t make you unfit, lack of exercise makes you unfit. I`m fitter now than before I started smoking because of exercise

So was it a lack of responsibility that killed me sister in her car wreck? Or just luck of the draw?

You don`t die the first time you smoke a cigarette, or the second, or the third, or the 100th, that isn`t her point. Her point is that you run the risk of DYING by doing almost anything. You aren`t even old enough to smoke, so therefore how would you know anything about it?

BTW: No one gets addicted with the first cigarette, unless you know this fact from experience? Oh no wait, you aren`t old enough.

"every pack of cigs should have an additional $2 tax to go into all the frickin medicare and health care that you demand when you start hacking out your lungs."
I pay £3-4 of tax a day on cigarettes, that`ll easily pay for my medical care should I get anything smoking related, and most things not smoking related too.

" Most people who light up a cigarette for the first time get addicted. Not all, but most."
No-one gets addicted off the first one. I`ve been smoking for a year now and I`m not addicted yet, I know this because I can stop for a month when I get home, and I never need to smoke, but I do like it, so I do smoke. If smoking didn`t do anything to you when you started, you wouldn`t be a smoker.

Ho hum. It seems this site is for bored people who wanna debate. And Enohead.

My point of view is that people can smoke all they want... just not around me. If they do that, they need to be stabbed.

Everyone here needs a couple special brownies or a slice of space cake and mellow out.

I don`t understand why anyone would have a negative opinion of someone who smokes. It`s their choice and unless they`re doing it around you constantly (which, you can just say `hey, go outside`) it doesn`t affect you at all.

instead of reading all the comments and arguing, im only going to state my opinion. you shouldnt smoke because its bad for you, and the positives are little, but you shouldnt be a nazi and try to stop all smoking.
although, i think it is important to stop the smoking in public places, or at least most public places. if you want to smoke, go outside. why should you annoy others becuase you need your precious nicotine?

I wish that no one would smoke. But I don`t hate smokers. And I do dislike the tobacco company. I do think that they care more about money than people. Teen or otherwise. If they really cared, they`d stop advertising to get more customers. The customers they have already know how to get cigarrettes and which ones they want.

You can`t stop smoking anymore than you can stop illegal drugs. If a law was made, people would still do what they are told not to do. This would just make prisons and correctional facilities more crowded with people. But I must mention, smoking is horrible for your wallet, lungs, and is the only way you can get bladder cancer (according to medical books), etc.

Also, although the site belongs to the Department of Health, the site is most likely managed mainly by teens and what they think is most effective. Other people probably help make it happen.

I enjoyed looking at the site and hope they can discourage people from smoking.

CanadaGirl78: Good for you. Have you been to the website: www.mychoice.ca ? It`s all about smoker`s rights. very interesting.

As for the rest of you...I`m tired of reading all this nonsense one way or the other...I`m going to go have a cigarette now. And I will be sure to blow my smoke in the general direction of all you militant non-smokers out there. :)

"instead of reading all the comments and arguing, im only going to state my opinion. you shouldnt smoke because its bad for you, and the positives are little, but you shouldnt be a nazi and try to stop all smoking"

So, instead of actually learning what real smokers and non smokers have to say, you`ll just ignore that opportunity, and spout your admittedly ignorant opinion carte blanche? Bloody teenagers.

joolia- No one gets addicted from smoke one- you get a killer head rush and damn near fall over - that`s it. The addiction comes with continued use. If you were old enough to buy a pack of smokes, you might just understand that.

I`m a non smoker, and I dislike smoking a lot, I applaud the smoking ban coming to the UK so that you cant smoke in public venues or restaurants or workplaces etc, but I dont see any point in removing smoking from movies, it just so happens that the character in the movie smokes... so what? Why arent they campaigning about the removal of murder scenes in movies or something?

jjcruiser- no one is saying an anti-smoking campaign is a bad thing- we`re saying it`s a waste of time to blame big tobacco for merely advertising. Lots of companies that produce deadly products advertise, why is big tobacco the latest whipping boy, other than smoking is no longer socially accepted?

As for my own damned web site for things I find important? I do think stopping teens from making the same stupid choice that I made is important. That said, I don`t think that is best accomplished by being all nasty towards big tobacco or making laws to further reduce advertising possibilities. I think if anyone really wants their kids to stay smoke free, don`t smoke yourself, keep health a family responsibility in the home and talk to your kids.

If these websites said stuff like that, I`d not have a word to say. But blaming big tobacco for kids smoking is like blaming the country of Columbia for some people doing cocaine.

    The way I see it...

Most people smoke because, at some point, they caved into some kind of manipulation, be it through peers (friends are doing it), role models (my favorite actor`s doing it), or parents (mom smokes, why can`t I?).

So, every time I see someone smoking, I see another pathetic, weak-willed, easilly-manipulated human cur. And they`re killing themselves.

Too bad they can`t do it any faster.
