Sleep starts aren`t the same thing as sleep spindles. Sleep spindles are just the name of a characteristic brainwave that you get in stage 2 sleep.

I don`t think I have ever had a sleep start...I have very strange dreams, though, but never anything like that. It`s so weird that our brains can invent explanations for them, so we imagine falling off a cliff or down the stairs. Really cool though!

Hehe, some of that was quite funny:
"Other reactions to sudden fear or surprise include...in men, the retreat of genitalia—kind of a “first things first” response."
Typical.
I get sleep starts as well (like I`m sure a lot do) but not too often, fortunately. When I do, though, I think I start visualising myself falling somehow (perhaps off a cliff or down the stairs) and then as soon as I`m awake I think that I must be falling out of bed. Fortunately, I haven`t actually fallen out of bed doing that yet...

I don`t hiccup. Well, I don`t hiccup much. At most I will hiccup once, and then be done with it. Weird, right?

most people don`t realize sleep starts (or "sleep spindles") happens to everyone. i learned a lot of this in psych, andsome of his explanations are a bit off. cool nonetheless!

I can stop hiccups too, you just have to think about them stopping and know you can do it.
It`s weird.

Well, I guess I will complete the trio. I get the sleep starts a lot too, but unlike the other two posts up above (tripping, and falling down stairs) I have the third one the article talks about: falling off a cliff. In a word, terrifying. I also sleep walk, but didn`t see that on the list. I have woken up in the strangest places, I tell you.

Thats interesting about the sleep starts, I didn`t know that there was a name for that, I always just thought it was me. Just like x_omni_x said, during, around and right after, I visualize something happening, except, I always visualize that I`m tripping over something.

"I get sleep starts all the time, but I was never sure why it happened. I still wonder if it`s the same thing, because my brain never conjures up a story to go along with it."

I get them quite a lot as well. It`s weird, because either right when it occurs, right before it occurs, or right after (I`m not sure which) I sort of half feel/half visualize myself stumbling down stairs. Not regular stairs, it`s like I`m walking horizontally, I guess because that`s the position you`re in when you`re in bed. I don`t know, but I feel better knowing I`m not the only one it happens to. :)
