I`m really freaking out about everyone`s reactions to this. Am I the only one that thinks that maybe it`s because no one respects people anymore that made this a problem. What happened to respect your elders and all that? I`ll tell you what happened. A couple of generations ago parents were too stoned to teach their kids self-control and now we`ve got a bunch of snotty little poos who don`t know when to shut their mouths! I`m not a conservative, but I`m tired of the disrespect that EVERYONE gives to EVERYONE these days. It`s got to end before we end up hating everyone all the time.

If I told my boss that I wasn`t going to take off my hat at our meetings, guess what....I would be fired too. He is lucky that he needs the majority of votes to get him sacked. Personally I found that this was freaken funny, and I hope that guy (the hat guy) gets fired. lol lol lol. This made for a great clip!

here is the rule on hats...gentleman remove their hats indoors and when the national anthem is played. ladies may keep there hats on unless it is (or once was) considered a man`s hat. for instance, a woman at a baseball game, wearing a baseball cap, when the anthem is played, she must remove her hat. romoving your hat is a courtesy, and thus we have civilization.

I wonder why those other councillors pretended that it was normal what this jerk did. They felt intimidated?

look this guy was disrespectful but that’s no grounds for what that jerk did. If this guy was still in the airforce then yes there would be some disciplinary action but he’s just some park worker and is breaking no rules. The motion to get him fired was uncalled for but the motion to penalize the park department $35,000 is perverse. I don’t care if he apologised the guy clearly has no self control and if he’s gona do that every time he gets hot headed he should not be in his position. Like smagboy said respect is earned not deserved.

So Samela you think its ok to sack someone who wont take their hat off indoors. Lets see 3 of the councillors out of the 5 agreed with us and 1 other agreed with you. If your ok about sacking someone for wearing a hat indoors why dont we go around hanging jaywalkers, and making motorists who dont use indicators face a firing squad. Dont you get that its all out of proportion?

I think the councillor is bordering on a dictator. The guy from the airforce doesnt say why he wont remove his hat but then why should he. Its nobodys gadarn business. He could have alopecia, a hair loss condition which is causing him embarrasment. You dont see the airforce guy getting all nasty cause the councillors are dressed in cheap suits. Hell the guys in the parks dept he`s quite entitled to wear clothing suitable to the job. I do detect a wobble in the councillors voice when he wants to cut the budget coz he lost the first vote. He must have been seething at that point. I think I after the apology I would have gone round his house with a truck load of moose sh*t, dumped it on his front lawn and told him to stick his job firmly up his ignorant ass.

Someone needs to kick this guy in the nuts. What a dick. The man served in the Air Force, show some f-ing respect.

Why the hell do people still follow that crappy rule? No hat indoors? Who cares? It is some stupid old tradition. The only time I believe in removing your hat is proper and necessary is out of respect, such as at a funeral, or during a prayer or pledge of allegience.

Samuela: The commissioner was assuming a quasi-military position, since he brought up the groundskeeper`s USAF background as the reason he should remove his cap. That`s really sad, because this ex-Marine commissioner should know that ALL military members, male and female, remove their hats indoors. It serves the rather gruesome purpose of training them to check for their helmets before going out into potential enemy fire. You do it so often every day that it becomes an unconscious activity. It`s not meant as a sign of respect, and you don`t remove your "lid" if you encounter a superior outside. However, you do come to attention and salute as a sign of respect, indoors or out, and then go into an "at ease" position if a superior officer requests it (which they almost always do). The groundskeeper was in a military "at ease" position while addressing the commissioner. I`m a USAF veteran, and approaching 50.

So, Samela, are you saying that the new Parks and Recreations employee (the one wearing the hat who was there to be introduced) was showing lack of respect for his elders? Or are you saying the pompous ass leading the meeting who never, not even once, ASKED the employee to remove his hat, but rather TOLD him to, rudely, is the one showing lack of respect for another human being? I contend it`s the latter. Elder or not. That`s what I`m reacting to. And I`m a veteran and somewhat old, so I`m saying this from the perspective of someone who appreciates respect of all sorts, but I certainly think it`s something that should be earned and should go both ways. :-)

I just wrote to all of the commissioners, not only pointing out this man`s arrogance and entirely inappropriate behavior, but letting the commissioners know that their nervous inaction was shameful as well. They acted as if a) they agreed with him, and/or, b) they were scared of him. Either way, ridiculous. :-(

It was obvious that the new employee thought the commissioner was joking -- after all, the guy is a groundskeeper, he`s wearing a knit cap, and this was Maryland in the winter. He wasn`t reporting to a squadron commander or the Queen of England -- just some stupid pompous local politician who`s an embarrassment to his community. The poor guy just didn`t realize he`d enlisted in The Cold, The Confused, The Cady Marines....

What a little tin-dick-tators these guys are. The council couldn`t get the man fired, so they cuts his department`s budget, probably the amount of his salary as a warning to the supervisior to let him go. The council is bunch of self-centered, easily threatened and an embarassment to the people who voted for them. In Wayland, we re-call ed the city council when they thought they could get away with an unjust firing of our police chief.

The councilman never directly asks the worker to take the hat off, he asks him if the guy takes his hat off in the Air Force (yes) but not here (no). If the councilman really wanted him to take the hat off, that`s when he should have asked politely; something like "Well, here we request that you do remove your hat, please". What a egomaniac!

that city council doesnt havey any sort of procedure, in council you dont just out of the blue add to the agenda theres such thing as due process. And was just so imature and petty to take the cash away to get rid of the position. But looking from the other point of view in the business world men arent supposed to wear hats indoors. And when you dont have the job and your dealing with old timers its not very smart to rub them the wrong way by doing this. I know I was brought up wit this thinking and it irks me when people wear thier hats indoors.

That guy rocked! lol. Really, he put the smack down on that guy. lol. Now that is pure comedy. I thought it was so funny that I signed up for an account just to post this. (Really I do find it very funny.) Man, that is going to keep the smile on my face for awhile. The guy asked for his hat to be taken off and he threw it back in the guys face. Well he paid the price for it. I would do the same thing. You would never find me refusing to do something that MY boss asked me to do. He is luckey due the fact that he needs more than one person to fire him rather than just the one. Crap, i need to watch it again...

Yup still funny! lol lol lol

Can I just get this right... This guy a so called person of demcracy moved that a guy would be fired from his job because he wouldn`t take of his Hat?
And when he didnt get that he cut their budget?

Man what a freak... surely its against the law? It just sounds wrong (I`m from the UK) that this man who has no contact with the employees company can fire him?

This poo looked like it was rehearsed.

"Dismissed?"

"No."

So they can make the next motion...

"35,000 off of P&R budget?"

Motion passed.

I hate draters in power. You only get these types to fill the jobs because they`re the people that are attracted to this sort of power so that they can show it off.

As an elected official, I would have handled it with a bit more tact. Inasmuch, as a former city employee I would have picked my battles and removed the darned cap. Save the fight for something worth fighting for. . .
