ppl saying that it`s a sad commentary on society today that a child would do that and I agree. But I think it`s even sadder that the painting is worth $1.5 million.

yeah, it really looks like it`s worth $1.5M

but a 12 year old who can`t at least -hide- where he sticks his gum should probably go to the stupid school- or he`s a smart ass and should be slapped

That goes to show you that you shouldn`t be taking kids to museums, especially those with Wrigley`s Polar Ice Gum and whatever, that painting looks like someone painted it in A.M. kindergarten or something.

"he is only 12 and I don`t think he understood the ramifications of what he did before it happened"

What a big load of B.S. When I was 12 I knew right from wrong and being disrespectful of other peoples property was diffenetly wrong. I would of been in so so so much trouble for this and probably wouldn`t of been able to sit down for a couple of weeks much less live something like that down with my parents. I don`t care how crappy or how cheap (or in his case the other way around, although I`ll keep my opinion of the art to myself) something of someone elses was if you just don`t go around distroying or defacing other people`s stuff.

I have nothing against art or culture or modernistic ideas...but it was just a painting. Im sure the artist would laugh if he saw us all wanting to cast a boy to hell over sticking a piece of gum to it!

Wow Madox you have this down man! LOL But yea I`m a firm believer in smacking kids as a form of punishment. Maybe if this childs parent had shown him the consequences of his actions beforehand this would never have happened. If I was the owner of an expensive painting, I`d be mad as hell at this kids behavior.

people nowdays are too overprotective over their childrens ... they never admit that their child did something wrong and blame the teachers/other kids etc etc .. and then the kid would think what they did wrong is right ... just use the damn cane and smack the poo out of your childrens ... modern way ? non-violence way to teach your childrens ? go to your room ? wth ? just use the cane ... caning wont maim your childrens ... 1 day the hurt will gone , 2-3 days and the bruise/dmg will heal ... and after the caning coax them and said what did they did wrong ... do this and the kid will not hate you ... preferably dont cane infront of other ppl and places where is visible such as hands ... buttocks and their laps would be fine

LOL IceErines... i thought i was the only one who noticed that..

anyways, as many other people have already said, when you are 12, you dont know a poo load of things, but you do know what the hell you are doing when doing something like that.

Has anyone else heard of D.A.R.E.?? i know it is for dugs and crap, but still once you go through that, and learn the consequences for drugs, you would know that vandalising a 1.5 million dollar painting is even worse.. he may not know it was worth that much, but even if it was worth $1000, (im guessing that a place like that wouldnt have a $100 dollar painting in there) worth doesnt matter when doing something stupid like that.

Okay, here`s what I think (if any of you care)

Yes, 12 is way too old to be sticking gum on paintings. However, it`s one of those things you do without thinking and you don`t realize the gravity of the situation until you get in trouble for it. He probably didn`t think it was a big deal, maybe they could just come and pluck it off when they found it, I don`t know. But the museum said the painting would probably be fine, and my theory is `all`s well that ends well`. It shouldn`t have happened, but I think everybody makes mistakes, and no one really has the right to judge.

Wrigley`s Extra Polar Ice gum....LMAO. That`s random to add the name of the gum. And he`s 12 (so what? I thought the age of reason was 7?)- when I was twelve I would have gotten my A55 stomped if I did that. And it looks like art to me...and it looks expensive. The brat would have known that if it`s in a museum- it`s important. He was just being a little a55hole. I`d make him pay for it for the rest of his life- all of his lemonaide stand money would be MINE!!!!!!

If I did something like this, I would get my ass beat so hard I would have to spend the rest of childhood standing up.

But I know far better than that.

Seriously, people, what is this world coming to? When poo like this happens, the only ones at fault are the parents for not doing their job.

At the age of 12, you already know A LOT. Of course to those that are 10-20 years older then that age, 12 seems pretty darn young. But in reality they already know and understand a lot more then you may imagine. Heck, a lot of them have probably even done things that would make you gasp in horror! *not me, but i have witnessed some in my last year of elementry*
This kid definately knows what he was doing, and knew the damage he had caused.....and not regretting it. Probably bragging it to the other boys after faking a sniffle in front of his parents.

And you guys, it`s not about whether the painting is attractive or not. The kid put gum on a painting worth 1.5 million. If you had paid that much for a painting, would you just let the kid go just because he`s 12?

In regards to the kid I would regard that as vandalism and he should definitely get punished for it. Yes, I know, 12-year-olds are dumb. That doesn`t make them oblivious to behavior and common sense. I would not have done that last year (when I was 12 and went there, oh and btw I thought it was awesome) and I don`t know anyone who would have, so I think the "he`s just a kid" argument is bs.

"I wonder why crap like that can be considered "art" and be worth so much. i don`t see what`s so great about it. i guess everybody`s an artist by 1963`s definition of art. my two year old sister draws on the walls with crayons beter than that."

No your two-year-old doesn`t, period. Not everybody is an artist. You`re wrong here. You`re showing your ignorance of contemporary art. If you`re going to talk about the problems with art, the least you could do is know what art is. Art isn`t a child`s drawing.

Read a book.

Enohead is absoluetely right. This kid would be punished for vandalizing a car, and the damagae to the painting is probably more severe. It doesn`t really matter if he did know whether or not he was doing anything wrong. He should be punished either way. If I owned the museum, I`d have a lawsuit filed against not only the child`s family, but the school for not watching the student better. Put those bums on the street where they belong, I say.

Taking a bunch of 12-year old`s to a museum of art?

They`d be bored out of their minds in about 30 seconds. Who thought of this little field trip?

Besides, looks like he was trying to improve the painting.

You people are acting like there`s a certain point in time that you HAVE TO GET RID OF THE GUM IN YOUR MOUTH IMMEDIATELY!!
Bullsh*t. He could`ve kept it in his mouth until he found an appropriate place to get rid of it.
It was vandalism. Period.
If a 12-year-old busted out the window of your car, you`d be all up in arms. Same deal. Destruction of property. In fact, your car is worth far less than that painting.
Now get off the carpet, you`re bleeding hearts are leaving a stain.

You know what? The more I think about it, the more I realize that you girls ^^ are right.
When I was twelve, I did something stupid without thinking. I raped a dog. Then I gutted it.
What did I know from right or wrong - I was just a kid. It was just this crazy impulse that I had. No harm done. Well, except to the dog. But it was an ugly dog, anyway.

^^ Agreed! If it had been something that required thinking ahead, I wouldn`t be so easy on him, but 12 year old kids are going to do some of the stupid things that come into their heads. It`s just the nature of the beast.

Who here can honestly say that they didn`t do SOMETHING when they were about the same age that was REALLY stupid and hurtful. My mistake hurt a friend, worth more than any stupid painting.

To the rest: I really think you`re all over-reacting about this. Personally I think it`s a hideous painting anyway and certainly wouldn`t call it art (imo...) `Course I know it was worth tons (for some reason) and he shouldn`t have done it, but even so. Calm down! He`s JUST a kid. It`s JUST a painting (of some kind...)

Its typical of people these days who do not understand or like something find it an acceptable practice to vandalise it. This kid will get off scot-free and learn nothing from what he has done. Apart from that you can destroy someone-else`s work and not be punished.
