He got it right the first time, but the second time he didn`t. For 630 he got nine, which was right and I think it`s probably because of 3+6= 9. Anyway for 242 he said one but it was five.

Thank you to Endymion for clarifying this for the people who are...

1) Claiming he didn`t get it -- the only way he can`t get it right is if the people screw up the math, and
2) Proving it is pure math and mentioning the multiples of nine. That`s one of my favourite topics in math. Another rule of nine that I like is taking any two digit number, adding the sum of its digits and subtracting from the original number; it will leave you with a multiple of nine. (EX: 76, 7+6=13, 76-13=63, aka 9*7.) This works on the idea that any number is represented by 10(x+y), and the two digits are (x+y). So when you take 10(x+y) - (x+y) you are left with 9x. (The multiple of nine.) I love math. :-)

ANYWAY... Catcatdog, you subtracted your numbers wrong. 7961 - 1976 makes 5985, not 6185. This only goes to further instill my point that people do their math wrong, and that`s the only way this won`t work.

this is no magic... this is simply math. lemme explain. first let`s look at the 9 multiplications. any number that`s a multiple of 9, and is substracted by another multiple of 9, will result in yet another multiple of 9. then, if you add up the digits, they will result in 9 again (IE: 9*7 = 63 => 6+3 = 9. or 9*43 = 387 => 3+8+7 = 18 => 1+8 = 9). now... there`s another thing. if you have a number... any 2+ digit number, and you scrumble it, and then substract it, it will always result in a number that`s divisible by 9, therefore, all of it`s numbers sumed up will result in 9. the only thing this program does is ask you to remove a number in the adition. for example, if you have 144, 1+4+4 = 9. if you remove one of the 4`s in it, the result will be 5, and the program knows that the only number that can make the adition result in 9 is 4... the number you took out =P.

Okay, just to recap on what`s been stated and restated for this one: If it didn`t get your number, something went wrong with either your calculations or the following of the rules. This is pretty solid mathematics to do with the multiples of 9. You can repeat numbers in your three-or-four-digit number, as long as it`s not simply three or four of the same number (I think that`s made fairly clear in the rules, too). So, you can have 2333, but not 3333. Every single person in this forum thingie that said it didn`t work and left details of what they did seemed to have either calculated the subtraction wrong, or skipped the first few steps. You`ve got to follow it to the letter for it to work. That`s the way these math tricks work.

hahaha, my original number was 1111, so it didn`t work, because 1111-1111 is 0, and if you take out one of those numbers, you have nothing. ha! loophole!

The instructions said to take a number with different digits, kooldood. You used both 2 and 4 twice.

MagicMoose, just picking a number doesn`t work. You need to do the math with a number with different digits 9994 has 3 digits that are the same.

Okay, if something seems to have gone wrong, best way to check is you`ve subtracted properly is to see if it`s divisible by 9. If you`re following the rules, you HAVE to get a number divisible by 9. It`s how the whole thing works.

Dumbfounded? I was sent an email detailing how it works. I chose NOT to read it because I don`t really care, for one. And for two, it takes away a bit of the wonder. That`s hardly me being "dumbfounded". It`s preferring to enjoy a magic trick.

i know how it works. sinse we all use the 10s numbering system, where after nine we get 10, 1 and 0, and zero being a placeholder. so we only have nine true numbers. (it said to exclude 0 in the directions as a number). after running a few experiments and typing in some bs numbers, i realized something. all the numbers you add together, minused from 9 is the answer you took away. in other words, lets say i typed in 3960 and i decided to take away 6. add 3+9 and you get 12. then add the 1 and2 and you get 3. 9-3 is 6. that`s how he gets is. ok lets try again but lets take away 3. add the remaining digits 9+6. you get 15. add 1+5 you get 6. 9-6 is 3. so you got it. ok lets do it with 9. (nine is an exception to the rule sinse he said do not take away 0, so when his answer is 0 what you took will actually be nine) 6+3=9. 9-9 is 0. sinse you cant take away 0 it is obviously 9. try it with any number. took me only 3 minutes to figure this crap out

tambourine33 - it doesn`t matter what YOUR number was. as long as you haven`t deliberately tried to trick it, then it will always get your number through some mathematical trickery. the equation is concrete.

Pontroll - of course you beat it, cos depite it clearly saying use a four digit number (which will always work) you used a friggin 400 figure number (slight exaggeration, i know) follow the rules, people, it will always work.

If you use all different numbers as it says, it always works. Once you`ve substracted the numbers, you`ll get a number where sets of digits add up to 9. The computer is simply looking what number he needs to make the rest add up to 9. He`s telling you not to circle 0 because if it all adds up, you circled a 9 (a zero would could also be possible, but is excluded to make sure it works)

5012 - 2015 = 299(7)

Both the nines are already nine and the 2 needs a 7. 2+7 is nine.

If someone puts in 60, the circled number was 3.
710 - 107 = 60(3)

It`s just a math trick. It`s quite simple, in most cases the 4 numbers add up to 18. In the few odd cases, such as 789, where they don`t add up to 18, they add up to a multiple of three. In the 789 example the other answer is 3, because 7+8+9=24 so the have to add three to make it the next multiple of 3.

As someone said here, ALL the the numbers from subtraction add up to some number which is multiple of 9. In this case it`s gonna be either 9, 18, 27, or 36, since we use only 3 to 4 digits number. That`s exactly why he asks u not to circle zero, cuz if you could and you entered 9 then he wouldn`t know if you`d circled zero or 9. but now he says 9, cuz u can`t circle 0!

It`s a simple accountant`s trick. I used to do it in math class with my teacher. Accountants can tell if they`ve made an error this way.

If you use any number (I use phone numbers), jumble it up, and subtract, the answer is ALWAYS divisible by 9. All you have to do is find the number that will make the whole number divisible by nine (hint: if you add up all of the digits of a number, and that sum is divisible by 9, so is the number. It works with 3, too.)

Circle the three. Type in the 5 and 1.
5-1=4
5+1=6
No three to be seen....ahhhhh! Now this is all I`m going to be doing all day. Dammit!

"its you just add up the numbers that werent circled
and just add them"
That`s not what happened to me!
I picked 1119
jumbled it to 1911
the answer was 792
I circled 7
typed in 92
9+2=11 1+1=2
BUT 9-2=7
Jesus, this is too much thinking for a sunday morning

Dear god Jagermeister. Ain`t drunk it for years. Its rocket fuel, and I nearly got arrested in Mexico being drunk on that. it was scary. the police there have machine guns.

Theres obviously some sort of equation and I think Eggamagga is probably right, I just cant be arsed to try it.

Hmm....... I chose
7024 then when I jumbled it I got
2704 then I subtracted them and got
4320 then I took away the 3 and typed in
420 and it guessed three! Pretty cool!

I did 581, then 815, so it was 815 - 581 which left me with 234, and i chose 4 and he found it as 4! It`s not freaky though, they obviously have a way of working it out. The ones where you don`t type anything in, though, those are creepy.

If you do it correctly, he`ll always guess it. You can`t use the same numbers for it though, (Like 2222 or 5555.) The answer to the subtracted numbers will always add up to 18. So if you subtracted and got 5760, they will all add up to 18. (5+7+6+0=18) If you circle the 7, then the numbers will add up to 11 and the difference between 18 and 11 is seven, so he`ll know the number you choose is seven! If you circle a zero, he`ll still know the number was zero because there was no difference, although I don`t know why they told you not to circle one...

I think this is the longest post I`ve ever written!

Drtee, you`re supposed to pick a number with lots of different numbers... Tanny, maybe you did your math wrong?

Anyways... Try the number 9231, jumble it to 3912, and circle the five. ;-) He guessed a six.

Hmm... he got it right both times that I did it, so I tried doing the math that someone posted up there to try and get it. It worked for my first number, but not for the second one. Maybe that`s not how they do it?

I still dont get how he comes to the answer..... One of my numbers after subtracting was 1998. I picked the 1. So I tried 9+9+8=26..... 6-2=4..... (and then because there were 3 numbers after I picked the 1) 4-3=1. But that didnt work out for anyof the others I tried.....
