So first it was "Duck and Cover!", and now it`s "Duct tape!" in case we`re attacked. Wow, we`ve come a long way in realistic thinking, haven`t we? B-|

Why is it people think ducking and covering is useless? Nuclear bombs don`t vaporize everything, if you`re within 500 yards they might, but the main threat is debris, and when a tree comes flying in the window would you rather be standing or lying down with your neck covered?

Amusing. I agree with Minicow though, it`s better than doing nothing. But there is nothing you can do if you are out in the open and see the flash... then you`re screwed... and the newspaper wouldn`t do anything...

The newspaper would still be helpful, burns from the flash are still one of the major dangers, a newspaper could save you from a bad burn on your neck.

It`s very scary that people back then had to be ready (aka anticipate) ALL the time just in case of an atomic bomb attack.
Sure, covering yourself with a newspaper or something like that might not help....but i`ts better then just standing there. Every little bit helps right?

No, the main forms of energy released by an atomic explosion are UV, visible light, and thermal radiation. The bomb itself does not vaporize, its the combined effects that do. When a building is burnt and hit with 400 mph winds, a little desk inside aint gonna do anything. Also, if you "see a flash", thats the last thing you will see as it will blind you.

An older friend of mine went to Russia recently. He got to talking with someone of similar age and the subject of the atom bomb came up. The Russian gentleman explained that they got the same films, and assumed that the big, bad USA was going to blow them up any minute. It`s interesting to know that they felt the same way back then.

I was just about to say that happy hippie.

The atom bomb was such a major threat to them that to avoid mass panic they had to give some way that people could feel safe. Even if it wouldn`t have eliminated the danger of the atom bomb, it definately would have made it more likely that you would have survived.

A girl I knew recently died in a terrorist attack. She was obliterated by the explosion as she was running towards it. Her sister who was further back and likely not running towards it got hit with the debris and was flown backwards breaking a few bones. It`s not quite the same, but the person in the safer position survived.

It is funny to me, how misinformed all of you are. The whole part of the "duck and cover" would help you if a nuclear bomb exploded. Most people do not die from the explosion of the atom bomb, most people die from the radiation. That is why ducking and covering is so important. A wall will stop some of the radiation from hitting you, along with laying on the ground. The only error made is the fact that if you can see the flash, you are dead anyway.

Uh...in order to be saved from the radiation, you`d have to hide under more than a desk...for a long time. It`s estimated that in Hiroshima 70,000 people died from the blast alone.

I don`t think you understand how the bomb works, but that is okay most people don`t. When it explodes radiation goes flying and covers everything. If you are behind a wall, that will stop some of the radiation from hitting you. After this point the radiation is no longer acting like an explosion, it has covered every particle imaginable. Therefore it is no longer helpful to hide under the desk. This is where the fallout takes place, and it is a whole different talk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fal...

Actually, there are three kinds of radiation: Alpha Particles (which CAN be stopped by paper)
Beta Particles (which can be stopped with glass)
    Gamma Rays (stopped by lead)
The best thing you could do if there was an atomic `flash` would be to run toward it, because that would be a whole hell of a lot more comfortable way to die than wasting away from 97% 3rd degree burns or lukemia.

Right. Ducking can save you from debris, but 85% of deaths by an atom bomb come by radiation a few months/years later.. Gamma radiations traspass mostly everything.
    So conclusion:
If you see a flash. You are drated up.

The Russians targeted an atom bomb on my house once. Luckily, I survived by hiding under a newspaper.

The best thing to do would be stand up with your arms out and hope for a quick death. If you are in the blast zone but not to close so you are dust then hope for a passing tree to take your head off because it is that or die slowly for radiation poisoning. If you could have survived but you didn`t then you wouldn`t know it...

Great. The combination of low-to-the-ground-ization and cute-cartoon-ism will protect me and my family from 20,000 Rads blasting our way!

im not sure if the duck and cover technique was actually designed for self protection, but more so as a way to keep the chaos of an A bomb down to a minimum. There`s not real way for the average person to protect themselves against that, other than to get to your basement, hide under something strong and heavy and hope for the best
