But there could be a big flood from the melting ice caps but that would just take out like 3/4 of the world but 2012 is not just some end of the world thing its the start of the new age where humans start evolving you should do a little research and alot of message boards banned talking about 2012 because of the flame wars.

jimbodahobo, I seriously doubt meteorologists take ancient superstitions like that seriously. The world will not end in 2012. If the world does end, it will be caused by one of two things: 1-A large asteroid or comet hits Earth; 2-Nuclear war erupts. Anything other than that, such as an inhospitable climate change or the explosion of the sun, will not happen for a very, very long time.

and they only are making a deal about the 2012 thing because they mayan calender and a few other ancient proficies claim the world will end that year

Overmann, I concur.

And ppl, don`t hate on cows!!! The cows never did anything to you! We have already brought the cows into a sad lifestyle of pastures and grazing whilst being pumped with steroids and slaughtered at a young age, why must we blame global warming on them?!!!!

I`m kidding. But still, this story kinda made me sad, `cause if this is true, it`s like trading one problem for another.

By the way, Bush is not screwing things up, and I am not a Christian. Who`s the one with conspiracy theories here?

I am not reciting conspiracy theories. These are documented scientific reports, not my own theories (except for the part about the Kyoto treaty being designed to hurt the U.S. economy. That cannot be proven, but I believe it to be true based on easily foreseeable economic effects of drastic controls placed on factories.)

As trees were cut down, the rate of destruction of the ozone decreased. True, the U.S. produces the most CO2 and methane emissions, but Bush was right to walk away from the Kyoto treaty. The treaty was designed for the sole purpose of hurting the U.S. economy while promoting the public images of France and other Kyoto supporters. The treaty would not only cripple the U.S. economy, but it would do very little to combat global warming. Human civilization`s damage to the ozone layer is miniscule compared to that done by nature itself. Cows alone are enough to make us worry. Trees alone are enough as well. The cycle cannot be stopped. Eventually, the human race will die out. In Earth`s early eras, the atmosphere was mostly carbon dioxide. Volcanos formed and released water and oxygen. A type of bacteria evolved that converted the O2 to CO2. When all the O2 was replaced with CO2, the bacteria died out and was replaced with trees that did the opposite. Now modern life is reversing it.

I heard about this weeks ago. For those of you who do not research Earth`s climate cycles, every respectable meteorologist in the country has been saying for years that we are in a 25 year-long stage in a cycle that alternates between warm weather and cold weather. We are in the warm weather stage, which means we have more hurricanes, more floods, and more melting of the poles. In the 1970s, people were afraid of global cooling causing another ice age, and that was around the same amount of time ago that is the length of the cycles. We are in the first 5 years of the cycle right now. We can expect more violent weather until 2020 or 2025. Trees naturally absorb carbon dioxide and convert it to oxygen gas, enabling us to breathe. Methane (CH3) is produced by most organisms and contributes to the destruction of our ozone layer. I am not qualified to hypothesize about how the methane is produced by the trees, but my immediate conclusion was the same: It explains a lot.

I am just a normal person trying to do this world a favor because none of you realize it that well and no trees dont harm the ozone and make green house gasses. The gas they do make if they make the green house gasses is too little to make a difference. The plants are what keeps us alive and in turn we keep them alive. and remember the internet can teach you alot so use it for stuff other than random fun. (all that has been said is my opinion so no need to listen to it but i would like it if you helped save the world instead of being selfish and causing pollution just cause you want something done the easy way.)

Well i for one believe that one person can make a difference is a load of crap. Yes one can get other people and then make somewhat of a difference but we need the whole world to work together to save this planet from its fortold doom which i don`t want to happen no matter how much i hate this planet. Ok from that point the rest you might think im crazy. Well if you heard about 2012 they say stuff is gonna happen and any time from then on there could be a great flood. I for one don`t want this world to destroy itself with all its pollution but as they say Evil destroys itself and we are the evil ones. We made the hole and the gas in the ice is making it worse so we are increasing in global warming. This has been one of the warmest winters yet and i think it will keep on getting warmer. So do not judge what i say cause its my opinion and you dont have to listen to it but if you would be kind please try to help this world a little bit before we are doomed. im no tree hugger ok?

Our planet is supposed to lose control and mess up drastically killing lots of plants and animals. It`s called the ICE AGE! We are just increasing the speed at which it comes. And the polar ice caps are supposed to melt cuz earth is naturally supposed to be hot. we are still in the ice age and already causing another one. :-(

ehh trees do take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen, but when they die, they take in a lot of oxygen and convert it into nitrogen, just like every other organic thing

most oxygen comes from underwater plants

that`s all

If the trees and plants really give off methane, then what`s the problem? They are probably designed to do it in a manner that doesn`t hurt our planet (and if it does, not much).

As far as global warming is concerned.... We`ve only been keeping track of weather for about 100 years with some sort of precision. Who`s to say this is just a cycle?

Also, there is like...6 billion people on this planet. Think of how much CO2 WE are exhaling. The world population is reaching the point where the same amount of people living is the same amount of people who have ever lived.

If we are to blame cows, and trees for merely existing, we should blame ourselves in that respect too.

Let`s have a gaint war...a big tree/cow/people war.

Guinstar excellent point about the cows. Every cow is a four legged methane factory. Did anybody read "Diet for a new America"?

anyway if you watch `the day after tomorrow` you will believe in global warming;) if it`s in a film it must be true... good film, too.
trees do not cause global warming. full stop. anyway, cows emit tonnes of methane i think if we`re gonna get concerned about stupid things then cows are more of a problem than trees.
not saying global warming`s stupid, just thinking that trees cause it.

Rich_in_VA, I`m willing to bet the reason why so many people in our era are concerned about a climate change this time around is because we`re so adjusted to the sea level being what it is, low or high tide. Any drastic increase in sea level resulting from the melting ice caps will in turn bring about drastic change.

The trees have been living here forever...and the Earth`s average temperature usually in the 70`s. Why do you think they find tropical plant fossils in temperate regions?

The earth`s climate changes - it will change with us or without us.

If you`re so concerned about it, stop driving your car, stop using your washing machine, hot water heater, tv, computer, etc. Quit whining about it and do something about it yourself. Stop bothering the rest of us about it; it`s your own little fantasy.

^here here. i think this is a bad idea to have the story circulated. people will continue to drive their cars, but burn their trees and they will think they are doing their bit.

its not the trees fault, they have been living here forever. its our poo, and we have to clean it up.

I`m still ticked the U.S. didn`t sign the Kyoto treaty, what with America emitting by far the most Co2 in the world right now. The sooner the U.S. sheds its excessive way of life, the better life will be for everyone else.
