"About 11 percent of young citizens of the U.S. couldn`t even locate the U.S. on a map"

11%, love.

That`s not the same as 1/3 of American students.

11% means that 89% can.

This is pretty halarious. I`ve actually seen far better, meaning funny, answers to questons on this show, but this is one of the top select ones by my own standards.

Good job, mr_genius. Any progress made by American`s in redeeming themselves in this pointless, neurotic and seemingly endless battle has been set back to zero because of your comment. Look people, everyone knows someone stupid. This has to be true because not everyone in the world is smart. Granted when I saw this a little part of me died, it doesn`t give all of you from Europe and Canada a right to bash and insult every last American with lude comments and petty insults. What is the purpose in it? Seriously. The same goes to you American`s who have insulted them, the British and Canadians, with the same pathetic insults. Aren`t we all above this? I`d of hoped we were by now. I find it rediculous that someone can`t post a single item without people from another country resulting to making fun of the country involved in the post. Why don`t some of you stay on topic for once and not result to childish, petty bull**** like you all seem to HAVE to do.

Y`see, some of the American defense on this site has been really credible and acceptible. Then someone like Mr Genius pops up and destroys all of your hard work by being a twat.

I will never consider myself European. Or British for that matter. I`m English, and whichever (admittedly English) idiot said "England is not a country, Its a state", you have just given me the greatest faith in bringing back capital punishment.

"Well..all Europeans are stupider...uhhuhhuhhuh!"

Pathetic. Grow up! If someone were to say all blacks/whites/asians were stupid they`d be rasict, yet all you are freely slagging off countries/continents. Places aren`t stupid..people are.

Anyway, back on topic, I have noticed that if you watch enough game shows, you will realize that most people who go on game shows like Family Feud and the Price is Right are the dregs of society. They tend to know next to nothing, so they always do very poorly. The only intelligent game show I have seen is Jeopardy. At least it attracts SMART people most of the time.

By the way Canadians and Europeans, those people in the clip are NOT typical Americans. They are the exception, not the rule. The so-called European Union is a testament to the fact that many Europeans are starting to realize that America really is the greatest country in the world. Why else would they want to band together into one big country?

I refuse to believe that 1/3 of American high school students cannot find the USA on a globe. I know a lot of very stupid teenagers, but none of them are THAT ignorant. I think that poll was taken by some European idiot whose bias against Americans compelled him to falsify a poll that would boost his ego.

"This one family doesn`t realize that Europe isn`t a country. These people are Americans. Therefore, all Americans are retarted."

This is called inductive reasoning, and it is almost always wrong.

Also, on the question where 11% of Americans couldn`t find the USA on a map, 21% of the British and 12% of the Germans and Italians polled couldn`t find it either...granted it`s not their country, but it`s still good to look at all of the data before drawing conclusions.

29% of Americans couldn`t find the Pacific Ocean, but 48% of British and 40% of French and Swedish couldn`t find it either.

(I got all this info after taking the poll myself. I got them all right, quite easily too, and I`m a 16 year old American. So no, not all Americans are stupid ethnocentric idiots.)

Funny, when I saw this had 90+ comments, I figured a fight had erupted over racism or something.

Thanks to Osprey for the link, that really surprised me. But those tested were aged 18-24. I guarantee you that high school students in this generation would do better--what with 9/11 and the war in Iraq (which I CAN locate on a map, thankyouverymuch), the Middle East is practically all we learn of in either geography or world history class. And if they can`t locate their own country on a globe, it`s not because they`re stupid. It`s because they`re lazy. I for one blame the media--or rather, the nation`s addiction to it. I think the world would be a lot better off without MTV or any form of reality TV (which is really false advertising).

But I guess no amount of ranting will do anyone any good here, so I`ll just leave it at that. Funny video. :-)

I said that if they said Africa they would have got it right. I am not stupid, you have to know the rules to that game. It`s a survey, there fore I am saying there would be enough "like minded" people who would think Africa is a state for it to show up on the survey. Got it? Good.

Whoever said "England is not a country, it`s a state in Britain" please go and learn your facts, that`s like saying the entire main continent is a country, and France, Spain, Germany etc are all States. Just because the US is set up that way doesnt mean the rest of the world is.

And about the person who said about American schoolkids thinking the UK is in the Middle East, this is about a survey was done to get US high school kids to point to the United Kingdom on a map, and they generally pointed at countries in the Middle East.

"It is the kids who can`t borrow money from thier parents, who have to work to go to the movies, who are striving to learn."

Agreed. I bust my *** off to afford tuition to college just so I can get out of working as a bagger at the local grocery store. I have to pay for my tuition with no help from anyone. You better believe I work hard.

However, seeing some people with scholarships or having their parents pay for them to go to school to fail classes (or bribe others to do their papers for them), party hard and end up doing nothing productive makes me wonder why college even exists. Higher learning? Right.

Can`t they make 2 sets of colleges? One for the rich stuck-up do-nothing dropouts that party (which will still be charged admission), and the other for people who have an existant GPA to actually learn at with lowered tuition?

MY GOD FOR THE LAST TIME... ALL AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CAN POINT OUT THE U.S. ON A GLOBE/MAP!!!

I go to what I believe to be, based on SAT scores, a slightly below average high school. And I can`t possibly begin to imagine even the dumbest of the dumbest of the dumbest kids not being able to point out the U.S. on a globe. If kids in America were really so concerned with being `cool,` then they would know where the U.S. is geographically, because where I come from (and again this isn`t a $10,000 a year prep school, this is in average or below average public school), someone who was that stupid would get made fun of and laughed at mercilessly.

Most american kids are morons because they look up to Ashley Simpson (I realize it is Ashlee, but she should be normal) and MTV and pop culture. They are the same jocks and preps who make fun of nerds and geeks. It is those kids which are ruining America`s reputation. So to those from other countries, I beg of you, do not bash America as a whole, as I am offended by those comments as I am part of America. But rather to bash those 60-70% of people who are the stereotypical Americans. And to those 60-70% I just talked about, No, I do not want fries with that, so in 20 years when all you have is your McDonald`s job, you don`t have to ask me.

Okay enough of the bashing. All americans are not lazy and stupid. There are indeed a good percentage of them that are. Especially high school students. I would say about 60-70% of high schoolers are lazy and/or morons only about 30% want to do better. That is what is wrong with America. People think that if they spill hot coffee on thier pants and get burned then they can sue the company for not syaing thier coffee is hot, COFFEE (unless iced) is SUPPOSED to be HOT. I also believe that probably 70% of the lazy/stupid high schoolers have rich parents. They dont have to have a job or they just dont care about thier job because "Daddy can always buy me what I need" It is the kids who are not rich who want to learn and do more in school because they want to be better off than thier parents. It is the kids who can`t borrow money from thier parents, who have to work to go to the movies, who are striving to learn. Not the drug addicts who leech off thier parents. I believe that <

That was funny. Sadly it wasn`t surprising. It wouldn`t suprise me if 1/3 of American kids couldn`t point out America on a globe. Alot of kids these days just don`t care. I work in very large company that hires college students as temps. It amazing what they don`t know. But it`s not the kids that are at fault, it`s the education system. We spend 30% more per year per student than any other country and continually test in the middle. We hear all the time that we need more money for education, but that`s wrong. We need to change the way we pay teachers for one. All teachers are paid on a scale based on their own education and their years of service. See something wrong there? There is no incentive to be a better teacher. We can`t pay the good teachers more and we can`t get rid of the teachers that aren`t performing because of tenure. With that said there are alot of students that are great kids and do a good job. Mostly because they have great parents. I`ll get off my soap box now.

Well unfortunately Scott, your own experiences aren`t viable compared to scientific studies. Whether you want to accept it or not, it`s true. And it`s even worse the knowledge a lot of Americans have about Canada. A Canadian comic and satirist Rick Mercer did a special a couple years ago called "Talking to Americans" where he went all over the States, and got people to congratulate Canada and sign petitions on the most ridiculous thing. Like "Stop the seal slaughter in Saskatchewan!!". Saskatchewan has no access to any oceans. It`s just little things like that. Insignificant? Perhaps. But still very sad.

You have to figure that there are a LOT of high school students and I`d bet that because they have different priorities and were they to be presented with a map without state lines drawn, 1/3 of them wouldn`t be able to point out the States. Just an opinion.

Ok...to whoever said that 1/3 of American high school students can`t point out America is totally wrong. Everyone in my school could point out America by age 7 and probably much sooner. I go to a large high school and I`m sure 97% of them could point it out. And NO ONE thinks Great Britain is in the Middle East.

I know that a lot of Eurpoean countries don`t like Americans because a lot of us think we are "the best country in the world" and believe me I can`t stand it when someone says that either. But not all of us are dumb, fat, and stupid like we are sterotyped to be. Every country has stupid people.

Every , non-retarded, American child over the age of two can point out America on a map. I`m sure of that. The worst thing I ever heard someone say in high school was that Canada was a state, and the entire class knew he was wrong. So according to my experiences, 100% of American high school students can point out the US on a map, and 97% know that Canada is a country.

Alright, moronic rasist`s, i want to see where you guys are getting this info saying america`s youth cant point out america on the map. my 4 year old nephew can even do that, so i doubt american high school students would have any problem with it. In fact, i could draw a globe from memory (not the names of anything. more of a geographical map).

"I`m not sure where Jon got his statistics but there is an official statistic that 10% of american kids can`t even point out the U.S. on a map of the world/globe."

Probably because 10% of American kids are between 0 and 1.8 years old.

"What the hell are you talking about?! ANY U.S. high school student can point out the U.S. on a globe, and no one thinks the United Kingdom is in the Middle East. Where are you getting these statistics?!"

I`m not sure where Jon got his statistics but there is an official statistic that 10% of american kids can`t even point out the U.S. on a map of the world/globe.

About the clip, 3 of the countries in the list are actually in Europe! How stupid can they get?! Also, to the people that said "If they said Africa they would have gotten it right." No they wouldn`t, Africa is also a continent. South Africa is the country of the two.

"typical americans"

I hardly think that is typical. I am sure there are plenty of stupid Australians as well. In fact, what has Australia ever done on a worldly level, to contribute??

I don`t think one American in that studio bar the host realsied. How grim. If that had been our Family Fortunes, with Les Dennis, he`d have said `if it`s up their, I`ll give you the money myself`.

But hey, England was the top answer.

Sad thing is, they probablly would have gotten it right if they said Africa. I think there are plenty "like minded" people to have chose Africa.
