if everyone jumped, wouldnt you just sort of push the world in and make it flat instead of changing its orbit? :-S

Oh god, they did an experiment where they had all schools in a specific county jump at exactly the same time. It caused a seismic wave sure, a really small one, but it did`t move or even DENT the earth. If a lot of people did this seismo graphs might catch it (machines that measure earth quakes and seismic waves beneath the earth`s surface), but it wouldn`t do anything astounding. I just learned about this stuff a few years ago.

Well, the change to the earth surely wouldn`t be that significant. The Tsunami in 2004 on Boxing Day caused the earth to wobble on its axis by about 2.5cm and also speed up rotation slightly. Imagine how much energy that needed?

I say when all of those dumb asses jump, we
should pull the earth out from under them so
they all fly away into space.
We don`t need idiots like that in our gene pool
    anyway.

to cahnge the worlds orbit u need more mass than the earth, i dont think we have any large planets around to do that, and what tomsss said is true, if the earth wasnt where it is now, we wouldnt be here. so y change it??

Why do I have a feeling this idea came from some friends who were high or drunk? I can see it now..

Stoner#1: Hey man, I just had the best idea!
    #2: Really man? What?
#1: We could like, have everyone on the world jump at the same time!
#2:Dude, I bet that would like, knock the Earth over a little bit!
#1: This is going to be so awesome!

yeah, if this would WORK i might take place, but all this will do is instantly burn about 100000 calories in one second...not that thats a bad thing, america is really fat and we do need some exericse...so if you are morbidly obese you MUST jump whenever the hell they tell you too! or dont...

I`m going to do it. And if something negative does happen (new ice age, earth being thrown into the vastness of space, etc...) I`m going to make sure and log on to IAB and rub it in all the faces of those that said it wouldn`t do anything before I die. If nothing happens...it`ll just be added with Y2K and Oprah keeping a constant weight on the list of things everyone thought were going to heppen, but didn`t really work out.

Did everyone skip basic science class? Even if you could get everyone in the world to stand on chairs, jump at the same time, and land at the same time, nothing would happen. We`re talking basic laws of motion, and gravity. The only positive aspect of this is that we might get a few extra Darwin awards, or at least Darwin injuries, from idiots jumping off chairs, hopefully falling, and injuring their empty skulls. I suggest anyone who thinks this is even possible, waste their time, and try it.

The real reason this doesn`t work (no matter how many people) is that the center of mass of the entire system (Earth + Idiots) stays in same spot, when they push off earth in jump, they move one way and the earth moves a microscopic amount the otherway, then when gravity pulls the two together, they both move back to original location. The way to move the earth is to launch the idiots into the sun, since they don`t come back, the earth doesn`t come back to its original position, although you would need A LOT of idiots to make that happen.. and a large cannon.

Herm, Herm, this is so imbecillic its hardly worth mantioning, BUT, for my own amusement I will elaborate..

The earth weighs 6.6 x 10^21 Tons. They say all they need is 6.0 x 10^8 people, if everyone was, say, 167kg, wich is overweight (lol americans) that would cause a weight displacement of 1.0x10^11 at most, so, in reality, a mere 1.0x10^-10 of the total weight of the earth. I can say with certainty that that shiit will do completly nothing

Oh yeah, and, if pple are jumping on opposite sides of the earth, that will cancel out the force they were trying to generate

And as for that craap about reversing global warming, sheesh... if anything were to send the earth out of orbit as much as they say, then we would all die, because the path the earth would take from its present orbit to a "new orbit" would not be stopped, so, the earth would just keep getting farther and farther from the sun.

I`m not even gonna start on that shiit about already having 300million pple alre

damn I made a mistake, from Tons to Kg, if we were all fat americans, if would generate a displacement of 1.0x10-13 as much as the earth.

so yea...it wont work. ever hear of conservation of momentum? there`s no outside force acting on the earth so nothing will happen. think of it this way. you push off on earth, and you go one way (called up), and the earth moves the other way, although inpercepibly (spelled right?). then the gravity between you and the earth pulls you back to where you started and the earth back to where it started in relation to one another. the various circular/elipsoid movements of the earth will also not be affected. (conservation of angular momentum comes into play too i think)

im such a dork. most people dont care about what i just said

Because no one would have believe it if it wasn`t a bum pretending to be a scientist.

i think if you`re gonna jump, do it off a tall building....that way it`ll have more force on the impact!!! go on!

But hey. If you jump, then the earth moves with an equal force the other way, but when you come down again, the earth will be pulled towards you. Doesn`t that mean the effect it has is negligable? (of course it is anyways, since the earth weighs so much more than all humans combined, but anyway)

The Moon is lowing down our rotation anyway. The effect of the movement of the oceans from the Moon`s gravitational pull is slooooooowly slowing us down by .05MPH per year.
