ummm.. the green dot is NOT the illusion. The illusion is that the purple dots disappear if you concentrate on the X

I would guess you see the inverse because the eye works so that color+inverse=nothing, therefore nothing-color=inverse. It`s just a guess though.

You know, I actually wonder why it we see the inverse color as the afterimage, why not some other color? I know the inverse color is the opposite of the original, but still, there have to be a better explaination, anyone know physics?

I always figured the `illusion` for this one was the pink dots disappearing upon focusing on the black crosshair... Can`t believe there`s a full-blown debate about the presence of a green dot or the absence of a pink dot. People, please: there is no green dot.

wow... I can`t believe you people are ACTUALLY arguing about this AGAIN!! Gawd, there is no hope for humanity is there. This whole thing is hilarious to read, people arguing whether a green dot is there or not. This is EXACTLY what the person who made this wanted. I`d say we give them a pat on the back. Then go back to arguing.

And Indigo... I have a GIF program and proof it DOESN`T flash green-the pink fades a bit. Pessimist.

This one isn`t as cool.
Keep staring at the blue dot in the middle of the picture. The blue dot will shrink slowly and then disappear completely... but it didn`t work for me.

A bunch of geeks on an internet forum isn`t gonna figure it out. Like a scientist once said, the human brain isn`t equipped to understand the human brain". Actually, that`s a scientist from a movie, but I still think that`s about right.

I followed the advice about setting the background and I still see the green. Either I am right, or my computer is messed up. Regardless, you guys need to relax. geckosrock needs to learn to watch his temper before it gets him into trouble.

Also, there is an easier way of doing this, simply set the image as your backround and you will see one pink dot missing.

download the image, and download a copy of irfanview from Http://www.irfanview.com. You`ll can extract the images using irfanview, and see that the images do not containt any green whatsoever. Go to Options-> Extract all Frames. Check it out for yourself.

Also if you look at that little gray area between the pink dots that is the most seperated and move your eyes with it, you`ll notice you don`t see the green dots. I have to relax my eyes and not focus for it to do this, but if you relax and do what I`ve said, you will not see green dots.

n00bs! there is no green dot, just like it says, watch the green dot and follow it with your eyes, you will see that where the green dot is, is simply where a purple dot dissapears. it is a flash animation, and that is how it works, therefore posting it into paint will not allow it to work. yup, you`re retarded, not a genious like you thought. go suck your moms tit little boy.

There`s nothing to "fall for", you stoned-up anus.
There is no green dot. Your brain thinks it sees a green dot, but it`s an after image of the purple dot.
Oh, screw it. I`m not getting into this big ass debate again.

man.
look at the top drating dot alone and wait for it to turn green, you can see the line where the image is accidentally split once it turns green.

although yes, blah blah the theory behind it could be accurate, but this is fake.

i`m drating stoned and i didn`t even fall for that poo.

It`s amazing how so many people are quick to discredit something. If you open the program in a GIF editor you will see that there is no green dot. There is 12 frames, each a fram with 1 pink dot missing. If you view it in the editor, it still works. It is not a flash program.

Jeez

This is total bull. Cover up everything except one pink dot and you will see it really is flashing green. This is NOT an optical illusion. It is an animation masquerading as one. I am amazed at how many people fell for it.

RinjHalfElf is correct. You can copy this and put it in ImageReady and see each individual frame. You can see that each frame has a circle of purple dots with one dot missing.

Also, the image is an animated .gif, very easy to construct. Just right-click and select properties to check out the image`s URL if you`d like.

Under the "Test3: Sensitivity to Brightness" section it explains after-image.

http://www.wholeo.net/Color/afterImg.htm
This shows that after-images can come from other colors. And you can stare at the yellow dot if you want ;)

You`re right. I went back and looked again and the green dot is just an after image - I saw it right away too and assumed it was there -, but there is still movement in the animation in the form of the blank space moving, and the rest of my explaination still holds.

There is no actual green dot though. All it is, is a wheel of pink dots with a blank space in it rotating about the center.
I saw the green dot amist the pink dots at the start. The pink dots dissapear when you watched the +. For me, I saw a bunch of afterimages of the green dot trailing the blank. For each person, the refresh rate of the eye is different. No one`s the same.
Why the green dot is there: This illusion plays on your eyes` sensitivity to light and dark. It is much easier for the eye to see an after-image when it experiences something bright like neon pink. Then you see the after image, in a complementary or inverse color. It kind of like a doctor shining a light in your eye, and seeing the imprint of the beam afterwards. The same trick can be achieved with color. Stare at a yellow dot for 10+ secs, then look at white, then you should see blue.

The movement of the green dot isn`t the illusion- the green dot is clearly moving in the animation. What it is doing is tiring out the receptors in your eyes by causing you to focus on one point for a long time. The receptors on your retina that are looking at only the red dots are going to become tired and stop sending information to the brain and you will therfore stop seeing the red dots. Green is the complementary color (the eye works in an opponent way) and those same receptors will therfore still be able to relay information to the brain about the moving green dot; and since it`s moving, the receptors have time to recover and will not get tired. Hence, the red dots seem to disappear and be "replaced" with a moving green dot.

ya dude thats not the point cause how do they make the dots diapear and the reen dot turn pink? sure its moving but thats not the ilosion part of it.... jsut like a pinwheel it moves but thats not the ilisuon lol i lobe pinwheels when u look away everything goas wavy XD

Male 318
ehh...thats not the point..red movement itself creates the elution of the green dot,

Im sorry, But im going to have to call BS on this one. Right click the image and hit copy, and then go into MSpaint and paste the picture. Now if this picture actually did what it says to be, it would work in both the website AND Paint. But guess what? The image in the paint one doesnt do anything, proving that the Image in the website is moving on its own, no eye trickery at all.
