Kind of ancient news...AMD fixed that ages ago.

    Interesting video to watch nonetheless.

Why would you stick with intel? Just because AMD chips run hotter? Thats pretty freaking ignorant. AMD is far superior to intel.

running a computer without its heatsink is like running a engine with no oil.

That was a joke, LordJonathan, because of what the video clip portrayed. I`m not a computer nut so I could give a rats a** what processor is in my computer so long as it works for my needs. I don`t play graphics-intensive games nor do I go around bragging about the latest hack or upgrades I got. Besides, if you want to convince someone (not me cause I could give a poo), don`t just call someone ignorant and tell them the other is better because you say so. Post a link in your reply from a reputable source. Don`t expect people to take the opinion of a total stranger as gospel. AND...running a computer without a heatsink would be more like running a liquid cooled engine without a radiator. Get your analogies straight.

hmm... maybe it wasn`t my CPU that burned out on me a few days ago then... maybe it was the motherboard then.

I`ve had and still have both, the only system I`ve ever had burn up on me though was an AMD 1.2ghz processor. Right now of my 3 PCs I use my 2.6ghz Pentium 4 for extreme gaming, I have a 3.0 AMD but it just doesn`t perform as well..don`t think i`d take the heatsink and fan off either though. Yes I know my ramblings are useless lol.

I have an AMD in mine and so far so good but I`ve only had this computer for 2 years. I`m hoping to get a new one in a few weeks though. The next computer I want has an Intel in it but I didn`t choose one over the other it`s just whats in the computer I want at the time.

I should say that current Athlons consume less power than the Pentium IVs, and are cheaper to run as a result. And simply put, removing the heatsink from the top of a processor is just plain silly unless you`re not worried about ruining it.

Im sorry its just that I fix computers for a living and AMD is a million times better and thats not my opinion its the fact of the matter. Im not gonna post 3 pages of links to show you that it is. The internet has this neat thing called google. Its a search engine. It seems to work pretty good! :->

I used the term engine without oil because more people would easily understand that then saying something else.

Last but not least im glad you know nothing about whats in your computer. Everyday thats the people who I take their money from.

I am with LJ here...seriousy, the reason the AMD processor blew so fast is because it works so much harder for its money. That intel crap couldn`t even burn itself out, much less make me a damn pop-tart if I were to remove its heatsink.

I swear, why do they even make those things?

PS: LJ, I doubt your figure of "a million times better" is actually fact. I looked around, and I think it is something closer to the high six hundred thousands.

Good to see AMD has made a lot of progress since then. They run cooler than Intel now would be interesting to see the new processors go through that test. Although i`m not willing to try it. ;p

I bought an AMD Duron chip years ago and it fried just after I installed it. I took it back to CompUSA and told them they sold me a defective chip. They said no you fried it, it was your fault. $100 bucks down the drain...

I still think AMD makes the better chip, though. I currently own an Athlon.

Fixing computers for a living doesn`t make you an expert on component quality. And I know plenty about whats in my computer (I built it myself). If I have to sacrifice performance for the peace of mind that if my heatsink or fan ever fail, my computer won`t melt down, I consider it a bargain. I never told you to post three pages of links. I said A link (meaning ONE). When you call someone ignorant at least have the decency to back up your claim. If you are supplying a service to others for a reasonable fee, then I applaud you. Your post implys that you "take" money from people who don`t know any better, which would make you a thief.
Oh, and just for kicks, I looked up Intel vs AMD, and not one site gave statistical data proving the "million times better" that you claim to be fact. If by better you mean "faster" then it`s all relative. Not everyone needs a nitro powered funny-car for their daily commute to work, if you know what I mean. If not, google it

UMM, two things. 1) you guys shut up and quit bickering. 2)AMD`s ran hotter because they had an exposed die (you can see the chip). Pentiums have heatspreaders so they have a form of heatsink already (you see a metal plate). The comparison doesn`t hold up. Expose the Pentium`s die and see what happens.

for the duron processor video posted, well it was overclocked, and they probbably had no idea what they were doing, and also, it had no buisness running windows xp. also, notice how on the original video posted, they just watched the AMD processor start to smoke, instead of replacing the cooler quickly. they also didn`t use powerful enough processors to match what they used with intel. i also want to see them do this, from the booting up of the program, so we know that they haven`t changed any settings, which would make a big difference. anyways, for gaming, AMD is the way to go. intel sucks ass, so does microsoft. AMD overheats very quickly even as of today. I have 4 case fans just to keep it at a steady good temperature.

AMD is still better, beat Intel to the 64-bit world, does much more with lower GHz, and doesn`t have that worthless HyperThreading "technology". I`ve also noticed on about every Intel computer I worked with slowed down significantly over a long period of time, whereas AMD doesn`t have as serious of a problem.

To the guy that got a messed-up chip, you have to install the heatsink/fan PERFECTLY or they`ll reject your return. I am guessing you did install it correctly, it isn`t hard to do, but they use that excuse a lot at stores like that. The best thing you can do (probably too late now) is to try and call AMD`s customer service about it. Can`t guarantee it`d work, but it would be worth a try if it happens again.

    Couple of things....

1st Item: Depending on what you want to do AMD may be better or Intel may be better. Mainly comes down to what you like, kinda like Ford/Chevy. I have both types here in workstations and servers, I like Intel for my servers and high end workstations and AMD for gaming and video editing.

2nd Item) The two movies of the AMD and Intel blowing up are fake. They are using explosives. How? Because, a chip will not blow out of the socket. As in the Toms Hardware video, you just saw them smoke, they do not explode. Also, If you look closely at the other videos when they zoom in on the motherboard, you will see that there is a hole in the motherboard as well as 1/2" - 3/4" plywood, sorry, not going to happen.

3rd Item: Till the day we all die, people will say AMD owns or Intel owns. "If you use Intel you are stupid", "if you use AMD you are stupid" People get over it. Yes, it may beat one in one benchmark, then the other in another benchm

This just proves AMD smokes the competition.
I only use AMD for my customers upgrades, and if they are used to INTEL, 90% of the time they will comment about the stability being much better. AMDs now shut down after a certain temp is reached so no more smoking if you are stupid enough to run a CPU without a heatsink.

I could care less about AMD or Intel fan-boys...these kinds of idiotic flame-wars have been and will be around forever. I have machines with both brands of CPU. But I will say this...this has definitely made me re-think buying any more AMD. Not the video itself (because those can be doctored/biased/whatever), but more because of the sheer stupidity of the pro-AMD arguments here. All immature emotion, no facts that speak to the actual concerns. j-allan nailed it on the head. If Intel costs a bit more per MHz but will get more stability, count me in. And if AMD is primarily for gaming (basically squeezing as much speed out for as little cost as possible, regardless of overall quality/stability), then knock yourselves out...gamers are welcome to keep them in business (which is definitely better for everyone), and AMD is welcome to that market.
