I am a cessna pilot and have flown ultralights as well, and judging by that video, either he panicked or there was structural damage to the wing surface(s). You can`t see it off camera, but maybe the engine died as a result of the wing failing and getting caught in the propeller. I only say this because the ultralights as well as cessnas have a decent glidepath under no power, and they have a pretty low stall speed. That guy looked like he dropped like a stone.

Also, I noticed that immediately after the engine sound died, you could see the man trying desperately to pull back on the control stick, indicating a complete loss of control surface. Probably structural failure.

Okay, the only reason that may have looked fake is because the camera was fxed on the device, and the only thing moving was the background. It`s not fake. Have you seen movies like Jacob`s Ladder or Requiem for a Dream, where for a scene they want to have a trippy effect and strap the camera to them, so it`s facing them? That`s what this looks like, but it`s defintely not fake.

Why is it that anytime something that seems impossible or just too much to understand from one`s point of view or experience, someone comes out and yell "photoshopped!", "fake!", etc. Is this some kind of new trend like those that say, "first post!" or something? Just because your life has no excitement or purpose because you do nothing but sit in front of your computer all day, doesn`t mean everyone else`s life is the same. You should try and get out a little more. And by the way that poor dumbass must be in real pain, two broken vertebrae? damn.

ok i dont have the best broadband but i am assuming that everyone else has a smaller bandwidth because i can plainly see that that video is fake. and even if you cant see the details that prove its fake, when he starts falling immediately after the engine fails instead of gliding a little bit longer, that should say something.... doyyeee!!

    HERE IS SOME PROOF.
look at his shadow as he takes off. if you have to-- rewind and looka t it as many times as possible.. doesn`t it look suspicious that his own shadow is being cast upon him? how can someone`s own shadow be cast on their body?
then looking around a little more you can see that the shadow "shines light" on the airplane as it passes over, still leaving a dark outline that looked like the guys shadow. ok what the heck. looks like they had a cheap way of casting the shadow on their green screen. a simple beam of light with cardboard or something over it with his shape.

Apples, very insightful and I had thought about that possibility. However, I`m still not positive why the engine died. If the engine died as a result of the control cable failing and getting caught in the blade, then the control stick would have jerked violently on it`s own while connected to the control cable. Unfortunately, we can analyze this and come up with the most plausible explanation, but not be certain. For those who are disappointed they couldn`t see the aftermath, you`ll notice that the side the camera was affixed to was the first to contact the ground, so most likely the camera died just before the pilot`s impact. I`m sure in today`s society if they had that footage they would have been more than happy to show it, and replay the impact in slow motion about 5 times for maximum effect.

If the engine just died suddenly, something was not right, the fuel line may have slipped, or was broken in some way, but there are still other internal or external parts that may have contributed to the crash.

oswaldmooop, about the shorts and t-shirt, if he was wearing a sweater and pants, the drag would be greater.

RckJmesBjtch, the wheel spins, look close.

And for those of you who like to yell "PHOTOSHOPED!" you cant photoshop a video, and if you are going to yell "PHOTOSHOPED!" at least double the "P" in it.

here is evidence supporting the "photoshop conspiracy"...
MOSTCLEVER, if you read further down in your link it says "Lunsford was taken to WakeMed, where he was listed in fair condition Sunday afternoon. "

the video said otherwise. so this link was probably talking about a different ultralight crash.

and if you say "well he crashed near an airport too" well of course, you idiot.. anybody who flies an ultralight plane will start off in an airport, unless they have a long strip of road and are daring, or something like a runway that that belongs to them or someone they know, but all this is like a low percentage chance that someone flying an ultralight aircraft will not use an airport`s runway.

b3nzyme: The video was in fact titled Martin Lunsford, which by happenstance was the name of the patient listed. Gotta love the conspiracy theories.

btw: Fair Condition - Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious, but may be uncomfortable. Indicators are favorable.

So he had a bunch of broken crap, but the poor dude was still conscious. That must have been intense.

OK, I`ve read all these posts and it is quite obvious there is a lot of ignorance on this topic.

OK, I bought the plane in the video off ebay, or what was left of it. The trike portion was completely destroyed, the wings and tail were ok and the engine and root tube the engine were mounted too were ok, paid 500, parted it out for 1500 to various people needing parts.

Having the plane or parts thereof I can tell you what caused the crash, it is called pilot error.

The plane is question is an EIPPER QUICKSILVER MX using a Rotax 377 aircraft engine, not a lawnmower engine. The plane will fly GREAT with no engine and will go forward 10 feet for every 1 foot it falls, so at 5,000 feet up, the plane will go 50,000 feet or almost 10 miles foward with no engine. So engine failure is no problem in this plan, as long as you are NOT showing off to your friends at the airport by leaving the runway pattern to purposely strafe low over the trees, and then have an engine failure.

So in addition to showing off, they had a carb problem prior to takeoff, or so they thought, engine should have rev`ed to 6500, only went 5750, so theyt played with it and flew anyhow, which was dumb, but the fact is the carb was ok, they did not have the spark plugs tightened past hand tight, while the engine will run with loose plugs, it will not run to full rpm, hence the messing with the carbs prior to takeoff. BUT LOOSE PLUGS DID NOT CAUSE THE CRASH, TURNING THE FUEL LINE MASTER TO THE OFF POSITION TO MESS WITH THE CARBS, AND FAILURE TO CHECK THE FUEL MAIN TO ENSURE IT WAS ON, AND FAILURE TO RUN UP THE ENGINE PROPERLY PRIOR TO TAKEOFF CAUSED THE ENGINE OUTAGE, FAILURE TO MAINTAIN PROPER ALTITUDE CAUSED THE CRASH. And the pilot of this ultralight is a licensed general aviation pilot, obvious if you watch his feet, he converted the MX to used the foot pedals for the rudder, the MX has the rudder on the stick but GA pilots like to move it to the rudder pedals.

YOUR ASSUMPTION IS INCORRECT. NO STRUCTURAL FAILURE. PULLING THE STICK BACK ON A STALLED WING DOES NOTHING. FLYING NEAR STALL SPEED OVER TREE TOPS WITH THE FUEL TURNED OFF IS NOT A GOOD THING TO DO. CAN`T GLIDE OVER TOP OF TREES 5 FEET BELOW YOUR WING.

IF YOU WATCH THE VIDEO YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE THE VIDEO SHAKE AS THE WING STALLS, AT THIS POINT THE PLANE IS NOT DEVELOPING LIFT BECAUSE THE PLANE IS NOT GOING FORWARD FAST ENOUGH TO GENERATE LIFT AND THE PLANE WILL FALL LIKE A ROCK FOR 50 FEET UNTIL IT GAINS AIRSPEED TO RECOVER, BUT YOU CAN`T FALL 50 FEET TO RECOVER IF THE TREES ARE 10 FEET BELOW YOU. PILOT ERROR. FAILURE TO MAINTAIN PROPER ALTITUDE FROM FLIGHT OBSTACLES. THE WING STALL SHUDDER HAPPENS AT ABOUT 39 SECONDS INTO THE VIDEO JUST BEFORE THE PLANE FALLS INTO THE FIRST TREE. I ROUTINELY STALL MY PLANE WHICH IS THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL AND THIS IS THE SAME SHUDDER I EXPERIENCE PRIOR TO STALL RECOVERY. IF YOU LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY YOU CAN HEAR THE ENGINE RUNNING LEAN AND OUT OF FUEL 2 FULL SECONDS BEFORE IT ACTUALLY CUTS OFF. ALL HE HAD WAS WHATEVER FUEL WAS IN THE LINES AND IN THE CARB FLOAT BOWL. THAT`S ENOUGH FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES OR LESS FLIGHT TIME.
